“Not his body,” Azrael repeated.

His voice came from everywhere—the walls, the floor, the blood still glowing beneath Kael’s skin.

“His crown.”

Kael stared at the shadow standing before him.

It had no face, yet he could feel its attention fixed on him.

The black mark on his palm pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Each beat sent pain through his arm and into his chest.

His mother stepped between them.

“Stay away from my son.”

Azrael tilted its head.

“Your son?”

A low, terrible laugh filled the chamber.

“You gave him to the darkness long before I reached him.”

Kael’s eyes snapped toward her.

“What does that mean?”

His mother looked at him, and for the first time since he had entered the fortress, fear broke through her royal composure.

“Kael, listen to me. You must leave.”

“You keep saying that.” His voice shook with anger. “Everyone keeps telling me to run, to hide, to trust them. But no one tells me the truth.”

The mark spread another inch across his palm.

His mother’s face paled.

“Because the truth will make you hate me.”

“I already don’t know whether I can forgive you.”

The words struck her harder than any weapon.

Behind Kael, the great doors opened.

Lucien entered first, followed by Rowan, Lysander, and Darius.

Lucien’s gaze immediately fell on Kael’s hand.

His rejected mate mark burned beneath his sleeve.

“Kael.”

Kael turned away.

“Don’t.”

Lucien stopped.

For a moment, the only sound was the slow crackling of crimson flames.

Then Rowan noticed the shadow.

His sword came free instantly.

“Azrael.”

The name carried something close to terror.

Azrael turned toward him.

“Still alive, little guardian?”

Rowan’s grip tightened.

“You should have died with the first king.”

“I did.”

The shadow moved closer to Kael.

“And yet, here I remain.”

Lysander stepped forward, silver eyes glowing.

“You cannot claim the Moon Crown.”

“I do not need to claim it.”

Azrael raised one dark hand.

The black mark on Kael’s palm flared.

Kael gasped and dropped to one knee.

Lucien moved toward him, but a wall of crimson fire erupted between them.

“Kael!” he shouted.

Kael pressed his injured hand against the floor.

The fortress trembled.

Images flashed through his mind.

His father standing before a black altar.

His mother bound in silver chains.

Rowan kneeling in blood.

A crown suspended above a pit of darkness.

And a younger version of himself, asleep in his mother’s arms.

A voice whispered through the memory.

One heir for one kingdom.

Kael’s breath caught.

Then another voice answered.

No. Take me instead.

His mother.

She had been standing before the altar.

Not as a queen.

Not as a prisoner.

As a sacrifice.

Kael saw his father reach for her.

Saw Rowan pull him back.

Saw the black crown descend.

Then the memory shattered.

Kael screamed.

The crimson wall vanished.

Lucien reached him before anyone else could.

He caught Kael as his body weakened, pulling him against his chest.

Kael tried to push him away.

“Don’t touch me.”

“You’re burning.”

“I said don’t touch me!”

Lucien released him immediately, but remained close enough to catch him if he fell.

That hesitation hurt more than Kael expected.

Azrael watched them in silence.

Then it spoke.

“The bond is damaged, but not broken.”

Lucien’s expression hardened.

“What do you want?”

“Your obedience.”

Azrael pointed toward the Moon Crown’s invisible presence beyond the fortress walls.

“The crown recognizes Kael. But it remembers the one who rejected him.”

Kael slowly looked up.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your bond is the door.”

Lucien’s face changed.

Azrael continued.

“When the crown opens completely, I will enter through the wound you created.”

Lucien stared at Kael’s blackened hand.

“No.”

His voice was quiet, but absolute.

Azrael laughed.

“You rejected him to save his life. How noble.”

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

“You know nothing about that night.”

“I know everything.”

The shadow leaned toward him.

“I know your father threatened Kael. I know you believed rejection would hide him. I know you watched him walk away while pretending you felt nothing.”

Kael looked at Lucien.

“Is that true?”

Lucien said nothing.

That silence was answer enough.

Kael’s heart twisted.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried to protect you.”

“You made the choice for me.”

Lucien lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

For once, he did not defend himself.

The black mark reached Kael’s wrist.

His mother stepped forward.

“There is still a way to stop it.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked at the mark, then at the shadow.

“The crown must reject Azrael before Azrael claims it.”

Rowan shook his head.

“That is impossible.”

“No,” she said. “It is dangerous. There is a difference.”

Kael forced himself upright.

“What must I do?”

His mother’s eyes filled with sorrow.

“You must return to the Moon Crown and choose what you are willing to lose.”

Kael looked at his hand.

“What if I lose myself?”

“Then the crown will belong to Azrael.”

“And what if I refuse?”

Azrael’s shadow stretched across the floor.

“Then the mark will reach your heart.”

Lucien stepped beside Kael.

“I’m coming with you.”

Kael turned sharply.

“No.”

“Kael—”

“You have already made one decision for me. You will not make another.”

Lucien flinched.

Kael faced the shadow.

“If the bond is the door, then I will close it.”

Azrael’s laughter shook the fortress.

“You cannot close a door with a broken heart.”

Kael lifted his marked hand.

Silver light burst from the ring on his finger.

The black mark stopped spreading.

For the first time, Azrael became still.

Kael felt the Moon Crown calling him from beyond the walls.

Not gently.

Not patiently.

Like a king demanding the return of his blood.

His mother reached for him.

“Kael, if you go to the crown now, it may take everything.”

Kael looked at her.

“Then tell me the truth before I go.”

She swallowed.

“What truth?”

“Did Father sacrifice you to save me…”

Kael glanced at Azrael.

“…or did he sacrifice me to save you?”

The chamber fell silent.

His mother’s lips parted.

No answer came.

And that was when Kael understood.

There was another secret.

One even the Crimson Queen had been afraid to reveal.

The Moon Crown called again.

This time, something answered from inside his chest.

A second heartbeat.

Black.

Ancient.

Awake.

Azrael whispered:

“Now you are beginning to remember.”

Kael’s eyes turned silver.

Then black.

And somewhere beneath the ruined Moon Kingdom, the Moon Crown opened its eyes.

Kael could not look away from the figure beyond the mountains. It had Lucien's face. The same sharp jaw. The same dark hair. The same cruelly beautiful eyes that had once watched Kael stand alone beneath the full moon while an entire kingdom laughed at his rejection. But the figure wore no crown. It did not need one.The world itself seemed to bend around it.“That's impossible,” Lucien whispered. He had managed to stand, though his legs trembled. One hand remained pressed against his chest, where the five interlocking circles glowed beneath his skin.Kael turned toward him.“Do you know who that is?”Lucien shook his head.“No.”His answer came too quickly.Kael noticed. So did the boy standing beside him.“You're lying,” the child said.Lucien's gaze snapped toward him.“Be careful what you accuse me of.”The boy laughed bitterly.“You always say that when you remember something you don't want anyone else to know.”Lucien went still.Kael looked between them.“What does that mean?”
