The Moon Crown had opened its eyes.

And Kael Ashwyn could feel them watching him.

He stood motionless in the Crimson Queen’s chamber, one hand pressed against his chest. Beneath his ribs, something beat in time with his heart—but it was not his.

One heartbeat belonged to him.

The other belonged to the darkness.

“Kael?” Lucien stepped closer.

Kael barely heard him.

Silver light spilled from his eyes, illuminating the ancient symbols carved into the chamber walls. The black mark on his wrist had stopped spreading, but it no longer looked like an ordinary mark.

It had become a crown.

A tiny black crown etched into his skin.

Azrael watched him with unmistakable satisfaction.

“At last.”

Kael lifted his head.

“What did you do to me?”

“Nothing you did not inherit.”

“I inherited the Moon Crown. Not you.”

For the first time, Azrael's shadow seemed to smile.

“You still believe the crown and I are separate things.”

Rowan moved in front of Kael, sword raised.

“Do not listen to it. Azrael feeds on confusion. The more you question your own identity, the stronger it becomes.”

“Then perhaps you should have told me the truth before now,” Kael replied.

Rowan's expression tightened.

He lowered his sword slightly.

“I know.”

The simple admission left Kael with nowhere to direct his anger.

He wanted Rowan to defend himself. He wanted his mother to explain the missing pieces. He wanted Lucien to stop looking at him as though he were something precious that could be destroyed by a single touch.

Most of all, he wanted to know which parts of himself he could still trust.

The second heartbeat grew louder.

Thump.

The floor cracked beneath his feet.

Thump.

Every flame in the chamber turned black.

Darius swore under his breath.

“That is not normal.”

Lysander dropped to one knee, his silver armor vibrating with ancient power.

“Your Majesty, you must leave this place.”

Kael looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because the second heartbeat is calling something.”

A distant roar shook the fortress.

The Crimson Queen went completely still.

“No,” she whispered.

Malachi, who had been standing near the shattered doorway, suddenly drew his blade.

“What is it?”

His gaze shifted toward the eastern windows.

Beyond the fortress, the night sky was changing.

The moon had disappeared behind a spreading veil of darkness. In its place, a red ring surrounded the empty sky, like an enormous eye opening above the world.

Rowan's face drained of color.

“The Eclipse.”

Kael stared at the sky.

“I thought the Eclipse was a myth.”

“It was supposed to be.” Lysander rose slowly. “The last time it appeared, the three bloodlines went to war. The Moon Kingdom fell, and the first pact was sealed.”

Azrael extended one shadowed hand toward Kael.

“And now the pact is ending.”

The black crown on Kael's wrist pulsed.

Suddenly, he was no longer standing in the chamber.

He stood beneath a blood-red sky, surrounded by broken pillars and fields of silver flowers turned black.

A vast throne rose before him.

On it sat a man wearing the Moon Crown.

The man's face was hidden, but his hands were unmistakably familiar.

Kael had seen those hands in his childhood memories.

His father's hands.

“Father?”

The man lifted his head.

For a moment, Kael saw his own face staring back at him.

Older. Colder.

His eyes were completely black.

“You came,” the man said.

Kael took a cautious step forward.

“Are you real?”

“Real enough to warn you.”

“Warn me about what?”

The man rose from the throne.

“Never trust the second heartbeat.”

Kael looked down at his chest.

“What is it?”

His father's figure approached, but the darkness between them seemed to stretch endlessly.

“It is the price I paid to keep you alive.”

Kael's throat tightened.

“You gave me this thing?”

“I gave you a choice you were too young to make.”

“That isn't an answer!”

The throne room trembled.

His father reached toward him.

“The crown does not choose its king, Kael. It chooses what remains after the king has been broken.”

Kael stepped back.

“Tell me how to stop Azrael.”

His father's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Azrael is not the one you must fear.”

The darkness behind the throne began to move.

Something enormous stirred beneath the black floor.

His father seized Kael's shoulders.

“When the second heartbeat stops, one of you will die.”

“Who?”

His father opened his mouth.

A blade pierced his chest from behind.

Kael screamed.

The figure holding the weapon stepped out of the darkness.

Lucien.

But his eyes were black, and the blade in his hand was made of silver and shadow.

Kael stumbled backward.

“No…”

Lucien looked at him without recognition.

Then he raised the blade.

And struck.

Kael woke with a violent gasp.

He was back in the Crimson Queen's chamber, lying on the stone floor. Lucien knelt beside him, one hand hovering near his shoulder.

“Kael. Look at me.”

Kael scrambled away.

Lucien froze.

“What happened?”

Kael stared at him, breathing hard.

He could still see the blade.

Still hear his father's final warning.

Lucien's face softened.

“Was it a vision?”

Kael nodded slowly.

“What did you see?”

For several seconds, Kael couldn't answer.

Then he looked at Lucien's hands.

They were empty.

But in Kael's chest, the second heartbeat continued.

“Nothing,” he whispered.

Lucien knew he was lying.

He did not press him.

Across the chamber, Rowan was speaking quietly with Lysander. The Crimson Queen stood beside the window, staring at the red ring surrounding the sky.

Malachi approached Kael.

“You need to understand something about the Eclipse.”

Kael forced himself to stand.

“I'm listening.”

“The Eclipse does not simply weaken the boundaries between worlds. It reveals what has been hidden by the bloodlines.”

“And what has been hidden from me?”

Malachi glanced at Lucien before answering.

“The truth about the second heartbeat.”

Lucien rose.

“If you know something, say it.”

Malachi's expression hardened.

“Your father knew what Kael carried. That is why he ordered you never to trust the Moon heir.”

Lucien's jaw tightened.

“My father is dead.”

“His secrets are not.”

Malachi turned back to Kael.

“Twenty years ago, the Moon King made a bargain. He offered his own heart to imprison Azrael inside the crown.”

Kael went cold.

“My father died.”

“Yes. But the bargain required a living heir to keep the prison sealed.”

The room fell silent.

Kael slowly looked down at the black crown on his wrist.

“No.”

His mother approached him, tears shining in her eyes.

“Kael, we tried to prevent this.”

“You knew?”

She couldn't answer.

Kael stepped away from her.

“Everyone knew except me.”

“Not everyone,” Malachi said quietly.

He looked directly at Lucien.

“Your father knew the final condition of the bargain. And before he died, he left instructions for what must happen when the Eclipse returned.”

Lucien's face became unreadable.

“What instructions?”

Malachi reached into his coat and produced a folded piece of black parchment.

A silver seal marked its center.

The seal of Black Fang Kingdom.

He handed it to Lucien.

Lucien unfolded the parchment.

His eyes moved across the writing.

Then all the color left his face.

Kael watched him carefully.

“What does it say?”

Lucien did not respond.

“Lucien.”

Slowly, the Alpha raised his eyes.

His voice was barely audible.

“My father ordered me to kill you if the second heartbeat ever awakened.”

And from somewhere deep beneath the fortress, a voice answered.

The Alpha has remembered his purpose.
