The sword stopped a breath away from Kael's heart.

For one suspended moment, neither of them moved.

Lucien's black eyes stared into Kael's silver ones. His hand trembled violently around the hilt, fighting a command older than either of them.

“Run,” he whispered again.

Kael tightened his grip on Lucien's wrist.

“No.”

The black veins beneath Lucien's skin pulsed.

“Kael, please!”

The sword jerked forward.

A burst of silver light erupted from Kael's chest.

The blade struck an invisible barrier and shattered.

Fragments scattered across the stone floor like pieces of black glass.

The force threw Lucien backward.

He hit the ground hard, his body convulsing as black smoke poured from his mouth. Kael staggered, clutching his chest. The second heartbeat thundered inside him, answering the Moon Crown's furious cry.

Then everything went silent.

“Lucien!”

Kael dropped beside him.

The Alpha lay motionless, his black eyes slowly returning to gold. The veins on his arm faded, but the rejected mate mark remained dark.

Kael pressed two fingers against Lucien's neck.

A pulse.

Weak, but steady.

“He's alive,” Kael whispered.

Behind him, Rowan pulled himself away from the wall. Lysander's silver chains dissolved, and the ancient guardian hurried to Lucien's side.

“The command has been interrupted,” Lysander said. “But not broken.”

Kael looked at the shattered sword.

“Why did it stop?”

Lysander studied him.

“Because the Moon Crown recognized your choice.”

“What choice?”

“You could have destroyed Lucien to protect yourself. Instead, you reached for him.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“Don't turn this into a story about love. I didn't save him because I forgive him.”

“I know, Your Majesty.”

“Do you?”

Kael stood, his hands trembling.

“Everyone keeps using my feelings as if they belong to the crown. My mother's sacrifice. Rowan's secrets. Lucien's rejection. Now this curse.”

His voice broke.

“When does any of it become mine to decide?”

No one answered.

For once, Kael did not wait for one.

He turned toward the doors.

“Take Lucien somewhere safe. I need to speak with Azrael.”

Rowan immediately stepped in front of him.

“Absolutely not.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

“Move.”

“You nearly lost control of the crown.”

“And standing here arguing won't change that.”

“Azrael is manipulating you.”

“Then I'll ask questions he doesn't want to answer.”

Rowan stared at him for a long moment before lowering his sword.

“I'm coming with you.”

“No. You will stay here.”

“Kael—”

“That was an order.”

The words rang through the chamber.

Silver symbols ignited across the walls.

Rowan froze.

Slowly, he lowered his head.

“As you command, my king.”

Kael had not intended to use his authority against Rowan.

But the power had answered him anyway.

He glanced at his hand. The black crown marking remained, surrounded by a thin ring of silver.

The two colors were spreading together.

And he had no idea what would happen when they met.

The passage beneath the Crimson fortress was colder than Kael remembered.

He descended alone, guided by silver flames that appeared whenever he approached the walls.

The deeper he went, the louder the second heartbeat became.

At the bottom of the stairs stood a circular chamber.

Three doors faced him.

One was silver.

One was crimson.

The third was black.

Kael recognized them from his trial beneath the Moon Kingdom.

But something had changed.

A fourth door now stood behind the black one, made of pale stone and marked with a symbol Kael had never seen before.

A hand.

Inside a crescent moon.

Azrael's voice drifted through the chamber.

“You came without your guards.”

“You wanted me alone.”

“I wanted you to choose.”

Kael faced the black door.

“Why are you trying to take my crown?”

“Because it was never meant to belong to you.”

Kael's fingers curled.

“My father wore it.”

“And look what happened to him.”

The words struck harder than Kael expected.

Azrael continued.

“Your father believed he could imprison me. Your mother believed she could bargain with me. Your guardian believed he could hide you from me.”

“And you believe you can control me.”

“No.”

The black door slowly opened.

Beyond it was an endless darkness.

“I believe you can become something greater than all of them.”

Kael did not move.

“I'm not interested in your promises.”

“Then perhaps you will be interested in the truth.”

The chamber shifted.

Images appeared in the darkness: the Moon Kingdom before its destruction, its silver towers shining beneath a clear sky.

At the center of the city stood a great temple.

Inside it, a man knelt before an enormous stone altar.

Kael recognized him immediately.

His father.

But he was not alone.

Standing opposite him was another man wearing a crown of black iron.

The first Shadow King.

Azrael's voice softened.

“Before the Moon Crown existed, there were four rulers. Four bloodlines. Four guardians of the ancient balance.”

Kael watched as the rulers gathered around the altar.

“Moon. Crimson. Shadow.” He frowned. “You said three bloodlines.”

“There were three kingdoms.”

The image changed.

A fourth symbol appeared beneath the altar.

The hand inside the crescent.

“The fourth bloodline was erased before your kingdom was founded.”

Kael stared at it.

“Who were they?”

“The people who created the first pact.”

The image shattered.

For a moment, Kael saw a child standing beside the altar.

A little boy with silver hair and eyes as black as the night.

The boy looked directly at him.

Then he smiled.

Kael stepped backward.

“Who is that?”

Azrael did not answer immediately.

When it finally spoke, its voice had lost its usual amusement.

“That is the reason your father feared the second heartbeat.”

The boy lifted his hand.

The same black crown appeared on his wrist.

Kael's breath caught.

“No.”

The child pressed his palm against the altar.

The chamber shook.

And a voice spoke from behind Kael.

“Because that boy was never supposed to exist.”

Kael spun around.

A woman stood in the doorway.

She wore a long silver gown, and her white hair fell past her waist. Her face was unfamiliar, but the power radiating from her made the flames bow.

She looked at Kael's wrist.

Then at his eyes.

Tears gathered in hers.

“My goodness,” she whispered.

“The last son of the fourth bloodline.”

Kael raised his hand defensively.

“Who are you?”

The woman slowly knelt.

“My name is Seraphine.”

Her gaze moved toward the black door.

“And I am the woman who gave birth to Azrael.”

Kael went completely still.

Behind him, the second heartbeat stopped.

For a single, terrifying second, there was nothing inside his chest.

Then the woman whispered the words that changed everything.

“And, Kael, I am your grandmother.”

Kael could not look away from the figure beyond the mountains. It had Lucien's face. The same sharp jaw. The same dark hair. One hand remained pressed against his chest, where the five interlocking circles glowed beneath his skin.Kael turned toward him.“Do you know who that is?”Lucien shook his head.“No.”His answer came too quickly.Kael noticed. So did the boy standing beside him.“You're lying,” the child said.Lucien's gaze snapped toward him.“Be careful what you accuse me of.”The boy laughed bitterly.“You always say that when you remember something you don't want anyone else to know.”Lucien went still.Kael looked between them.“What does that mean?”
