ALBA POV

Kael should not have been able to escape. Cell 4 has three locks. Silver. Iron. Wards. And two guards. All day and night.

Someone helped him, I said.

Ares was pacing in front of the empty cell. Back and forth like a caged wolf.

I know, he growled. And I am going to find them, and I am going to kill them.

Marcus laid out the guard roster on the table. Papers everywhere.

These four were on duty that night, he said, pointing. Tessa. Jonah. Bren. Cole.

I looked at names. My stomach dropped

  • The Alpha kings rejected Luna    THE TRIAL

ARES POVThe throne room was full of people and tension, and that silence that comes before a storm. Every elder there, robes on, faces blank. Every guard there, hands on swords, eyes on doors. Every servant pressed against walls, trying to disappear. All came to see what happens when an Alpha King puts his own Council on trial for treason.Because today we put Elder Rowan on trial in public for treason and conspiracy and for trying to kill my Luna.Rowan sat in the center in silver chains. Old and grey and should have looked broken. But he did not. He was smiling like he already knew how this ends, and it was not with him in chains.I sat on the throne with Alba beside me. Not in a separate chair like good little Luna, but right on the arm of my throne, hand in mine. Where everyone could see her. Where everyone would know she was mine and I was hers, and anyone who touched her would answer to me.Marcus stepped forward, voice echoing. Let record show Elder Rowan is charged with treas

She brought me food in the cell when I was alone before you found me.The room went silent. Marcus cursed. She has been here two years, he said. Clean record.Until now, Ares said.My wolf was uneasy. Traitor but scared, she told me. I felt it too.She would not, I said. She was kind to me.People do a lot when they are scared, Ares said. Not unkind, just tired. We found Tessa in the kitchens crying with a bag

  • The Alpha kings rejected Luna    26

ARES POVThe palace was quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that comes after a battle. After screams. After blood stops dripping and all you hear is what is left.Six bodies in the morgue. Covered in white sheets that were too thin. Names I knew. Faces I trained with since I was sixteen. Boys who called me Alpha even when I did not deserve it. Dead because of me.Twenty more in the healing wing. Moaning. Bleeding. Alive because we got lucky. And Kael was gone.I was standing in cell 4. Empty. Cold stone. Silver cuffs on the floor cut clean through. Not broken. Cut. With tools. Professional. Inside work. How? I asked. My voice was flat. No anger yet. Just that dead feeling.Marcus shrugged behind me. He looked tired, older than yesterday. Inside job. Someone left him a key. During the fight, when all the guards were at the wall.Who.We do not know yet, Marcus said. But we will. I have every guard who was on dungeon duty being questioned. No one leaves until they talk.Alba was behind

  • The Alpha kings rejected Luna    THE BLOOD MOON

ARES POVThe moon was bleeding. That is the only way to describe it. Red and low and big, hanging over the palace like it was watching us. Like it was hungry.Blood Moon, Marcus said behind me. Voice tight. It happens every hundred years. It is early. Forty years early.Victor rushed it, I said. My hand was on my sword. With blood magic. With sacrifices.I closed my eyes. Counted to three. My wolf was clawing at me from inside.Kill. Protect. Mine.I know, I told him. Soon.Alba stood next to me on the palace wall. Armor on. Leather with silver buckles. My sword at her hip. The one I gave her in the cell. Hair braided back tight. Practical. Eyes gold. Not scared. Angry. My Luna. My war. My everything. You do not have to do this, I said quietly, only for her.She looked at me. Yes, I do.AlbaAres, she cut me off. I am not staying behind while you bleed again. Not this time.I wanted to argue. I wanted to lock her in the tower. But that was not fair. She was not mine to lock up. She wa

  • The Alpha kings rejected Luna    The investigation

ARES POV The dungeons smelled like rust and lies. Cold stone, damp air, silver burning faintly in the walls. Elias was in cell 3. Kael was in cell 4. Both in silver cuffs. Both staring at me like I was the criminal, not them. Alpha, the guard said, hand on his baton. Leave us, I said. Alone, sir? Alone. The door shut behind me and echoed all the way down the hall. Alba was right next to me, arms crossed, face blank. But I could smell her anger. Sharp and hot. Like her wolf was right under her skin. Elias stood up slowly, trying to look tall. You cannot do this. I am Council. You were Council, I said. Past tense. You lost that right when you sold your king for money. Talk, I said. Or what, Elias sneered, leaning forward. Will you hurt me? Will you be illegal? Even for you. I am the Alpha King, I said quietly. I write the laws. I can also rewrite them. He laughed. You are weak. Look at you. Hurt. Bleeding. Relying on a Thorn Wolf to save you. Pathetic. I moved

  • The Alpha kings rejected Luna    THE LETTER

ARES POV Dawn. Day 4. The knock came too early. Three times. Marcus knock. Our signal. I was already awake. Had been for an hour. Watching Alba sleep. She was curled into my chest. Breathing soft. Face peaceful. Hair everywhere. Wearing my shirt. Like she belonged there. Like she always had. And for three days, she did. Alpha, Marcus said through the door, voice low. It is time. Alba stirred. What, she whispered, voice rough from sleep. Nothing, I said. Go back to sleep. Liar, she said, sitting up, hair falling in her face, eyes already knowing. What happened. I could hear her heart. Fast. Scared. I opened the door. Marcus looked like hell. Dark circles. Clothes wrinkled. Like he had not slept in three days either. Emergency Council meeting, he said. Noon. Elias is declaring you unfit. Alba went still behind me. Declaring what? Her voice was small. Unfit to rule, Marcus said. He says he has proof. Witnesses. Documents. I felt my jaw clench. My wolf went st
