Skylar
"Mama, when can I go and play with Ebony?" I ask again, hopping around impatiently. "I ate and brushed my teeth and got dressed. I even helped Daddy dress the babies!" Mama sighs softly and shakes her head. "Soon, little Sky, soon." She pats the top of my head. "Zoey says she's getting ready for the day now. It's not proper to barge in when a lady is getting dressed." I groan and sigh. Why do girls always take so long to get ready? Just throw on some clothes and go, go, go! That's what I do! 'Patience, Skylar.' That voice tells me. 'If she did that, then she wouldn't be as pretty as she normally is. We both like seeing her pretty, right?' My face starts to burn, and Mama looks down at me. "Oh, my little Sky and his cute little crush." She ruffles my hair, and I let out a small protest. "You're so adorable when you're embarrassed." I huff and shake my head. "You're a meanie, Mama." With that, I spin away and run outside. Mama calls for me, but I just keep running. If she won't take me over there, then I'll go by myself! It's so unfair! Why can't any of the grown-ups understand? They're so weird and stupid! They tell me to wait for them and then take forever, and then make fun of me all at once! As I stop in front of Ebony's house, I let out a small huff. Why does everyone call it a crush anyway? That's so childish! It's all just foolish adult nonsense! She's the same to me as Mama is to Daddy, and that's all there is to it! 'That's right, Skylar.' That voice whispers in my head. 'Ebony belongs to us. Never forget that, and always protect her. She's very precious to us. She's ours and no one else's.' Well, duh! I already know that! Ebony is my bestest friend ever, and I'll never let anyone else have her! The voice sighs in my head but says nothing more, and I can't help but frown. Why does it sound disappointed? Shaking the thoughts away, I walk over and knock on the door. I can't wait to play with Ebony today! Will we play tag? Hide and seek? I feel like hopping around in excitement! I'm so hyper! I hope it doesn't scare her again! I perk up when the door opens and I see Ebony's mama at the door. Zoey looks so much like my best friend, though people say she's very scary. I don't see it, though! She's always smiling around me and Ebony! "Hello there. It's a bit early, as Ebony is still getting dried off and dressed, but you can come on in and wait." Zoey smiles down at me and lets me inside. "Don't go up and see her yet, though! It's improper for a boy to barge in on a girl getting ready for the day." My face burns once more. "I—I wasn't going to do that!" I stammer and scurry over to their couch. Yet another weird adult! Do they all just enjoy embarrassing me? Hearing Zoey chuckle answers my question, and I huff under my breath. I sit in silence for a while, though I'm squirmy from all the energy I have. I blame the yummy syrup and jelly from my pancakes! Why is she taking so long? Mama always takes a long time too. Is it a girl thing? I hear footsteps coming down the stairs and turn around on the couch to look back. I grin happily and wave. "Hi, Ebony!" She jumps slightly and looks at me with wide black eyes. "I've been waiting forever! Did you eat already? I wanna play!" Ebony's face turns pink, making her even cuter than normal. She tucks some black hair behind her ears and nods. "I-I already ate... sorry for taking so long... I couldn't decide what to wear." She whispers while playing with her hands. Zoey must have done her hair, as it's styled in two loose front braids. It's always so pretty in the moonlight, as it has a purple hue. She also has a purple shirt on along with a pair of black overalls and some purple sneakers. She looks so ready for a day of endless fun! I start to say something to compliment her appearance when Zoey chuckles yet again. "Don't scare my pup too much now." She pats the top of Ebony's head and smiles at me. "You two take care now. Don't go into the woods by yourselves, though. Stay around here." I nod and puff up my cheeks. "Of course! I will never let any meanies get their icky hands on my Ebony!" I say firmly and walk over. I take Ebony's hand and grin. "Let's go!" Ebony stumbles after me but never complains. A small smile forms on her face, and she giggles as she too is very excited. She may be very shy, but she's also just as much of a hyper kid as me! 'We must protect her with everything we have,' that voice whispers in my mind. Nothing bad should ever come her way. 'She deserves everything, and we must give it to her.' I already know that! As I shout this in my mind, Ebony tugs at me. "Y-you okay?" I look back at her and tilt my head. "Y-you just looked far away... that's all." I shake my head and flash her a cheerful grin. "No need to worry! I'm perfectly fine." I then let go of her hand and tap her shoulder. "Tag! You're it!" With that, I take off, making Ebony cry out her complaint before chasing after me. Nothing like a nice game of tag with my bestest friend to start the day! No weird adult thoughts today! A life of fun is ahead of us, and I know I will enjoy spending it with Ebony!Skylar "Ebony, wait!" I grab her hand and try to get her to look at me. "Please don't go! I've loved you for a long time." I squeeze her hand tightly. "Why are you rejecting me?" Ebony finally looks back at me, her expression strained, as if she doesn't want to say what she's about to. I have a feeling it's going to be worse than just a cold rejection, but I push on anyway. I need to hear this. "Skylar... I do love you." My heart hammers in my chest at those words. "We've always been together, which is why this hurts me to tell you this... but you're like a brother to me." Ebony's words cut through me, and I can't help but flinch. "W-why...?" I swallow hard and steady myself. "I've never treated you like a sister, nor have you treated me like a brother. I'd know, since I have little siblings." Ebony pauses and seems to consider this for a moment. Hope flares in my heart. Maybe I can fix this! Then it gets crushed into a million pieces once she speaks again. "Just because you nev
Ebony When I open my eyes, I find myself in the middle of our pack. I look around, feeling dazed and confused. When did I get here? I could have sworn that I went to bed. I look up as I hear a commotion just ahead. Curious, I walk over, putting my hands in my hoodie pockets. What's going on? Everyone sounds excited and cheerful. "Congratulations, Skylar! I'm so happy for you!" I freeze at the sudden voice and look up. The woman speaking and hugging my childhood friend is his mother and the current Luna of the pack, Daisy. "Thank you, Mom. I couldn't be happier right now." A handsome smile graces Skylar's face. "I can't believe I have such a wonderful woman as my mate." My heart hammers painfully in my chest. Skylar found his mate? Since when? I put a hand over my heart, wondering why it hurts so much. Is it because he didn't tell me first? "It truly is wonderful, my boy." Aiden, the Alpha, smiles proudly as he stands next to his Luna. "You'll be ready to step up in no time! Now
Ebony Getting ready for the day isn't that hard for someone like me. I have nothing to show off to anyone, and even if I did, I wouldn't want to anyway. The boys in our pack aren't so bad, but the ones in the other packs? As I pull on my purple hoodie, I shudder at the memory of the boys picking on me and calling me names. I wish they'd leave me alone. They only do it because my mom is mated to another woman, which I find stupid. Why does that have to matter anyway? The Moon Goddess put them together for a reason. I bet it's just an excuse to pick on me. If not for my friendship with Skylar, I'd be the easiest target. 'They're just jealous of you, darling,' Cierra chimes in. 'Never let them get to you. You have me, so there's no need to take any of their nonsense. If I'm not enough, then Mom will put a stop to it.' I wince at the mention of Mom. I rarely tell her anything, as I hate to be a bother. Nothing's worse than being a burden to the people you love. I sigh and put a scrun
Skylar I quickly shower and get ready for my run after breakfast. As I pull my muscle shirt over my head, I hear a knock on the door and look up. “Come in!” I call out. Father comes inside and shuts the door. “How are you feeling, son?” Seeing my puzzled look, he continues, “Tomorrow’s your big day. You’ve been waiting for this for a long time, and while excitement is a very strong emotion, nervousness is as well.” I pause, hesitating as I ponder his question. Sure, I’m nervous—but about what? I highly doubt Ebony is going to reject me. If anything, it’s going to be like dating for a while. I’m prepared for all of that, so… why am I nervous? Father watches me before sitting down on my bed and patting the spot next to him. I follow his silent command and sit down. “That nervousness may seem silly to you, but it also makes sense. You two have been friends since childhood and all.” Then it clicks. “Oh!” I hesitate, then look at Father. “I’m not afraid of her rejecting me. What I’m
Skylar As I wake up from a dream from my childhood, I can’t help but smile. Back then, things were so simple. While things are much more complicated now, I still look forward to the future. What I’m most excited for is my eighteenth birthday tomorrow. 'It won’t be long now,' Jaden says excitedly, and I sense him wagging his tail. 'Ebony will know the truth, and I’ll finally get to meet her wolf!' I picture him prancing around like a pup and chuckle. I’ve known all my life that Ebony is my mate and soon-to-be Luna. Werewolves normally find their mates when they turn eighteen, but I happen to be special. Well, not me personally—my mother is special. Born as a “true Luna,” marked by the dark crescent moon on her shoulder, she is incredibly powerful. That trait passed down to me, so I was born with my wolf already awakened. Jaden has been with me all along, whispering into my mind before he even understood what he was saying. He was once a pup, just like me, and only knew he needed t
