Adrian Pov

The apartment felt different once the new information settled.

Alexander Blackwood remained on the opposite side of the table, still composed, still assessing, but the center of gravity in the room had shifted. My credentials were no longer the origin point. They were the final link in a chain that began with a procurement override only his brother could authorize. The knowledge did not make me safe. It only changed the direction of the threat.

I looked at the photograph again. Nathan and Sebastian under the awning of a private club three weeks ago. The easy proximity. The absence of surprise on either face. While I had been living inside the ordinary rhythm of a relationship I believed was real, Nathan had been meeting the younger Blackwood and building the structure that would empty my accounts and place my name on the damage.

Alexander’s voice cut through the thought. “We start with the last six months. Every change in Nathan’s schedule. Every time he came home late or left early. Every name he mentioned from work, even in passing.”

I nodded once. The motion felt mechanical. Cooperation was no longer optional. The unmarked cars had been pushed back by paperwork, not by goodwill. The criminal referral still existed. The only thing standing between me and a holding cell was the temporary value Alexander had assigned to the information I carried.

“He started working later about eight months ago,” I said. “Not every night. Two or three times a week. He said procurement was dealing with a difficult vendor cycle. I did not question it. The timing lines up with the smaller transfers I ignored.”

Alexander wrote something in a precise hand. “Did the late nights cluster around specific days?”

“Tuesdays and Thursdays most often. Occasionally Monday. He would come home after ten, sometimes closer to midnight. Shower. Eat whatever I had left for him. Very little conversation.”

“Mood?”

“Tired. Distracted. I interpreted it as work stress. He was good at offering just enough ordinary complaint to make the absence feel normal.”

I stopped. The shape of the manipulation was clearer in retrospect than it had ever been while I lived inside it. Nathan had not needed to steal my password in a dramatic moment. He had only needed time, proximity, and my willingness to believe the ordinary explanations.

Alexander did not offer commentary on the realization. He simply waited for the next piece.

“Names,” he said. “Anyone he mentioned from the subsidiary or from other departments.”

I forced my mind backward through months of casual conversation that had seemed unimportant at the time. “A project manager named Ruiz. A vendor liaison he called only by first name—Chris. Someone in finance at the main building he complained about once, last name I never caught. He mentioned Sebastian Blackwood exactly never.”

“The club in the photograph. Have you seen it before?”

“No.”

“Would he have had a reason to be there that you knew about?”

“No.”

The answers felt thin. Four years of shared space and the operational details I could offer still fit inside a handful of sentences. Nathan had lived beside me without ever letting me see the architecture he was building.

Alexander set the pen down. “You will stay here tonight. The referral is paused, not erased. Until Victoria has a clearer picture of how far the override trail reaches, you are safer under observation than on your own.”

The statement landed like another closed door. I looked around the sparse, controlled apartment. No soft edges. No evidence of a life lived outside of strategy. Staying here meant accepting his terms completely. Leaving meant walking back into a city where my name was already attached to a criminal referral and Nathan’s remaining contacts might still be watching.

“I have a brother,” I said. “If I disappear without explanation he will start looking. That creates noise neither of us needs.”

“Then you will message him. Something ordinary. You are staying with a friend while you sort out the separation. Nothing more.”

I almost refused on principle. The principle was a luxury. I took out my phone, typed a short message to Daniel, and sent it. The reply came quickly—concern wrapped in acceptance. He did not push. He never did when I asked for space. The knowledge sat uncomfortably in my chest.

Alexander watched me set the phone down. “Any other contacts who will notice your absence?”

“My mother. Not immediately. I can manage that tomorrow.”

He nodded once, as if another variable had been secured. Then he stood and moved to the wide windows. The city stretched out below in late afternoon light. From this height the streets looked orderly and distant. I remained seated and tried to measure how much of myself I had already handed over in exchange for temporary protection.

Trusting him felt like stepping onto the same kind of ground Nathan had left hollow. Different man. Same risk of discovering too late that I had been useful rather than valued.

“You still think I might be lying,” I said.

Alexander did not turn. “I think people under pressure present the version of events that serves them best. You are under pressure. I will continue to verify.”

“And when the verification keeps confirming what I have already told you?”

“Then the conditional status becomes less conditional.”

It was not reassurance. It was a statement of process. I preferred it to false comfort.

I rose and walked to the opposite end of the glass. The distance between us felt necessary. Outside, the light was beginning to soften toward evening. Somewhere in the same city Nathan was moving through the next stage of whatever plan he had built with Sebastian Blackwood. Somewhere else Evelyn Blackwood was likely already preparing the response to the override data Victoria had uncovered.

“What happens to me when this is over?” I asked.

Alexander turned his head just enough to look at me in the reflection of the glass. “That depends on what the full trail shows and how useful you remain while we uncover it.”

Honest. Cold. Consistent with everything he had demonstrated since the moment he told me to get in the car.

I was still deciding how to answer when my phone buzzed against the table.

I walked back and picked it up. The screen showed an unknown number. No name. No preview text beyond the first few words.

I opened the message.

**You should have stayed quiet. Now both of you are problems.**

The words remained visible for three full seconds.

Then the message deleted itself.

The screen returned to my home display as if nothing had arrived. No record in the conversation list. No notification badge. Only the residual tension in my hand and the clear memory of the threat.

Alexander was already watching me. He had seen the shift in my expression.

“What is it?”

I held the phone out. “Unknown number. The message deleted itself after I opened it.”

He took the device and examined the screen. There was nothing left to examine. He handed it back, already reaching for his own secondary phone.

“Repeat the text exactly.”

I did.

His face did not change, but the quality of his attention sharpened. He typed a short message to Victoria, then another. When he looked up again the calculation behind his eyes had moved to a new stage.

“They know you are here,” he said. “Or they know you are with me. Either way the quiet period is over.”

The apartment no longer felt merely controlled. It felt exposed.

I closed my fingers around the phone. The unknown sender had needed only one message to make the new reality clear.

Nathan had not simply disappeared.

Someone was still watching. And they had decided that my continued cooperation—and Alexander’s decision to keep me out of a cell—had made both of us targets.

Nathan PovI sat in the short-term rental and watched the city lights come on through the thin curtains. The place was clean, paid for in cash, and registered under a name that was not mine. No doorman. No cameras in the hallway. Just a bed, a table, a kitchen that barely worked, and a laptop that held everything I still needed. It was not comfortable. It did not need to be. Comfort was for people who planned to stay.I opened the laptop and checked the accounts first. The money had moved the way it was supposed to. The early transfers were already sitting in places that would take time to follow. The larger ones had done their job. They had put Adrian’s name on enough paper to make him look guilty. That part had worked cleanly. Adrian was careful with numbers at work, but at home he had trusted me. Trust made everything easier.I checked the company systems next through the back ways I still had. Adrian’s login was locked. His accounts were frozen. The internal review had started on

Alexander Pov The photograph remained on the table between us like a piece of unfinished business.Adrian Cole stood on the opposite side of the glass surface and did not look away from it for a long moment. When he finally lifted his eyes, the earlier anger had settled into something tighter and more useful. He understood the shape of the problem now. Understanding did not make him cooperative. It only made him harder to read.I preferred hard to read over broken. Broken people made mistakes. Hard people could still be leveraged.“Sit down,” I said.He did not move immediately. The refusal was small and deliberate, a reminder that he still possessed the ability to choose. Then he pulled out the chair opposite mine and sat. The movement was controlled. No wasted energy. No performance of distress. Whatever emotional damage Nathan Reed had left in him, Adrian was not offering it for display.I opened the folder to a fresh page and kept my pen ready. “I want the complete timeline of

Adrian PovThe residential tower sat on a quieter street than the corporate glass of Blackwood Holdings, all dark stone and understated security. The driver took us into an underground entrance that required two separate code confirmations before the gate lifted. The unmarked cars did not follow past the final turn. They idled at the corner instead, visible in the side mirror until the ramp curved downward and cut them from view.Alexander said nothing during the last stretch of the drive. He spent the time on his secondary phone, typing short messages and reading replies with the same focused stillness he had shown the officers. When the car finally stopped in a private bay, he opened his door first and waited.I stepped out into cool concrete air that smelled of expensive tires and nothing else. No public parking levels. No random residents walking past. The space belonged to him the same way the boardroom had once belonged to him—completely and without apology. He led the way to

Alexander PovThe two unmarked cars boxed us in with the quiet efficiency of people who had done this before.I watched the officers step onto the pavement through the tinted glass. Four of them. Plain clothes, department-issue posture, the particular stillness that came with knowing the paperwork already existed and only the physical retrieval remained. One carried a folded document in his left hand. Another spoke into a shoulder radio too quietly for the words to carry.Beside me, Adrian Cole had gone very still. He did not reach for the door. He did not plead. He simply watched the approaching men with the same controlled refusal he had shown me for the last twenty minutes, as if the entire machinery of the city had decided his guilt and he still declined to agree with it.Letting them take him was the cleanest move available.I had no official authority left. The board had stripped it that morning with a vote Evelyn had arranged weeks in advance. Any interference now would be not

Adrian PovThe car door shut with a sound like a vault closing.Alexander Blackwood did not look at me immediately. He gave the driver a short instruction I did not catch, and the vehicle pulled into traffic without urgency. Tinted glass turned the morning city into a muted blur. The interior smelled of leather and cold air. Everything about the space was controlled, expensive, and designed to remind the passenger who held the power. He opened a slim folder and set it on the seat between us. Printed transaction logs filled the top pages—my employee ID repeated in clean black ink across approval after approval.“Two point four million,” he said. His voice was low and precise. “Routed through a subsidiary I am still listed as overseeing. Every final authorization carries your credentials. Explain it.”I kept my hands still on my thighs. “I didn’t authorize those transfers.”“Your login did.”“Someone used it.”He turned his head. The full weight of his attention landed on me like a phy
