Trust Issues

Once Jude and I walked past Mama, she stammered, "Will you disregard your mama so harshly over this woman?"

Eyes shut tight, he squeezes my hand. Exhaling loudly, he stops and then faces her. Through near weepy eyes, he answers, "You know it's not that, Mama."

"Well, what is it? ...Everyone, please give us some privacy."

Now, walking past Jude, he snatches me close, whispering, "Do not leave with anyone. You have to trust me. Promise me you won't leave."

"I promise."

Within seconds, Marisol grabs my hand and starts pulling me away. Grinning from ear to ear, through clenched teeth, she says, "We found you a boat ride to the mainland. It leaves Monday evening. We purchased you a plane ticket back to Michigan as well. If you miss the boat, you'll miss your plane. I suggest you tell Jude you want to stay here tonight."

Who do I trust? Yes, Micah and his family have been kinder, but Jude gave me shelter, a job, and a professor willing to help.

Just as we go to turn the corner, Jude shouts
