LOGINJacob POV
I wanted to make sure the night before Raven was leaving was special for her. After Zane and Ben had left for home, I started staying in the Bos pack’s packhouse, but not tonight. Tonight I have arranged for us to have the use of one of the small cabins on the edge of the pack’s territory. I didn’t do this because I am expecting something to happen between us tonight, and I hope Raven doesn’t take it that way. I just wanted to make sure it would be just the two of us. After putting the lasagne in the oven, I quickly cleared the dishes I had used and headed over to pick Raven up.
Raven had decided to leave her new car at Sara’s until she was leaving because she was scared that if her parents found out about it, they would find some way to either sell it out from under her or destroy it. She also had asked me not to pick her up somewhere her parents might see me. That first night I dropped her off after the party, when she had me park a few houses away from hers, I thought that it was because she didn’t want her parents to know that she had been spending time with a boy. As the week went on, she still didn’t want me anywhere her parents would see me. I got upset thinking that she didn’t want me to meet her parents. That for some reason she was ashamed of me. That changed the day that I overheard a conversation that she was having with Sara. I hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but with wolf hearing it sometimes happens. It turned out that it wasn’t that she was ashamed of me. She was worried about what her parents would do. They apparently were heavily into drugs and gambling, and she was scared that they would use my good nature to try and get money out of me.
All this week Sara and her parents had been slowly getting Raven’s things out of her parents’ house, and this afternoon she had gotten the last of everything that Raven wanted. So I’m picking her up at Sara’s tonight. She was going to drive her car over, but with me being on the Bos pack territory, it would have been a little difficult. Duke and I agreed with him didn’t want to take the chance that Raven would take a wrong turn and see something that we didn’t want to explain yet.
I pulled into the driveway to see Kevin sitting in his car looking like he was about to puke. I tapped on his driver’s window and waited for him to roll it down. “You OK, man? You’re looking a little green.”
“I don’t know if I can do this.” I knew what he was referring to. Sara had told him that if he wanted another chance with her, he had to earn her parents' approval too.
Kevin, Duke and I had spent the other night talking over a few games of pool. Kevin told us that he was almost positive that Sara was his mate. Her eighteenth birthday was only six months away. It doesn’t sound like a long time, but when you have a wolf howling and whining in your head, it can feel like an eternity. He told us about her requirement for him to date her again. The guy was scared shitless to meet her parents. Apparently he hadn’t met them the first time he dated her because they hadn’t been together that long, and now he was going in as the guy who had already broken their daughter’s heart once. I wished him luck and started for the front door.
I was just stepping onto the porch when the door flew open, and Raven leapt into my arms. I looked over her shoulder to see Sara and her parents smiling from ear to ear. I guess I met their approval. Their smiles faded as they spotted Kevin sitting in his car. “He’s scared,” I said to the group standing at the door.
“Good.” Sara’s Dad says, stepping out onto the porch. He points at Kevin, then at the front door. There is no mistaking what he is saying. That was a definite ‘get your ass in here now’ motion.
I tried not to laugh. I did. I honestly did, but watching Kevin turn even more green with worry something I didn’t think was possible I couldn’t help it. My chuckling earned me a swat on the shoulder from Raven. “What was that for? I thought you were mad at him too.” I say, smiling at the beauty in my arms.
“I am.” She says. “But this is serious. It is not a time for laughing.”
“OK, I’m sorry, Princess,” I said, kissing her forehead.
Kevin had joined us on the porch and extended his hand in greeting to Sara’s Dad. “Good evening, Mr. Demont. Thank you for allowing me to come here tonight and speak with you.”
Sara’s Dad gave Kevin a quick handshake. “We’ll see if it stays a good evening or not. Follow me, young man.”
“Yes, sir,” Kevin answered and disappeared into the house with Mr. Demont. I had to hold in another chuckle because I knew that it wasn’t the threat of physical harm that had Kevin scared. There is no possible way that Mr. Demont, being human, could ever take on Kevin in that sense. No, this was a matter of Kevin’s mental well-being, and Mr. Demont held all the cards at this moment when it came to that.
I turned to face Mrs. Demont and Sara. “I’ll have her home early so that you can have time with her before she leaves tomorrow,” I said, setting Raven down.
“Don’t rush.” Sara said, “Keep her all night if you want. Just have her back by lunchtime.” She said with a wink and shut the door, leaving a shocked-looking Raven standing on the porch with her mouth hanging open.
Jacob POV“That would be me,” Craig says. “I overheard the orders that they were given, and I told Chris. We figured that the only way we were going to get any help was to ask the two of you for it.”“We weren’t sure at first if we could trust you. After all, you had come to the party tonight. But we were going to give you the benefit of the doubt since they had plans to kidnap you. We figured that meant one of two things. You were either competition for whatever Fred is doing, or he thinks you’re going to stop him.” Chris explains. “So we then convinced these two that we could be of use to their mission. We were sitting in the backseat of the SUV when the two of you left the packhouse. We injected them with a mild sedative and then followed you, hoping that the sedative wouldn’t wear off before we got them off pack lands.” Chris says.Liam put his arm around his brother, pulled him for a side hug and kissed the top of his head. “Thanks, Bro.”“OK, what I want to know is why were you
Jacob POV“Ok, we’ll hear you out. Meet us at the coffee shop in town.” I said. All four gave us a nod and climbed back into their vehicle. Zane and I climbed back into ours and waited for them to start down the road. I picked my phone up off the floor as it started to ring for the fourth time since I had dropped it. “What the hell happened?” My Dad shouted, with panic in his voice from the other end.“We’re fine, Dad. We got stopped by some of the wolves from Fred’s pack. They are asking us for help.”“You’re sure the two of you are OK?” I hear Mom ask from somewhere behind Dad.“Yes, I’m sure. We are on our way to talk to them now in a public place. I’ll call you back after to let you know what we find out.” I said as Zane parked the car in front of the same coffee shop we had met Ray and his family at.“OK, be safe. We’ll be there with reinforcements as soon as possible. I’ll call you when we land.” Dad said before ending the call.Three of the four were already sitting inside when
Jacob POVAs Zane and I drove away from the packhouse, I put Dad on speakerphone, and we filled him in on what had been going on. It made me sick to have to repeat what we had seen to him. “I know it pained the two of you to leave them there, but you are right. There was no way the two of you could have gotten them and yourselves out alive.” Dad said when I was finished.“Dad, have you ever heard of anything like that before?” I asked, still not completely comprehending what had been going on.“From what you are describing, it sounds as if he is trying to burn their marks off,” Dad said.“What?” Zane asked.“It’s an old archaic practise that some Alphas used to use to control their packs. If a couple that the Alpha didn’t approve of marked each other, he would use his Alpha command to make one or both have sex with someone else.”“Shit,” I mumbled.“The two of you do remember that, unlike a lot of the myths that say when you cheat on your mate, they are the one that feels the pain. It
Jacob POVPossible Trauma TriggersZane and I stood there watching helplessly as Alex struggled against his restraints. The table shook. I could see where the cuffs were digging into his wrists.“Fine, have it your way. I will start.” Fred says as he starts to slide his free hand up and under the skirt of the woman on his lap. She starts screaming and fighting with everything she has. That is when I notice that her mate mark is starting to turn red.“NOOOOO, Fred, stop. Don’t do this.” Alex screams as he starts to fight harder to get free.“Oh, I am going to do this. The two of you are going to be used as an example of what happens when the people of this pack forget who is in charge. You were all warned that there was no longer going to be mates. Every female in this pack belongs to me to do with as I see fit. No one is fucking them unless I permit them. And the ones I don’t want can be used by the rest of the pack for entertainment. They will all be taught how to be good little subm
Jacob POVPossible Trauma TriggersThe second we set foot on the pack lands of Alpha Fred Jr., I could sense that there were all kinds of wrong here. We had not seen any patrols along the road on our drive towards the main gate. There had been no one at the large iron gates that stood wide open at the entrance of the pack lands just off the main road. It was like this Fred guy thought that he was invincible or something. It didn’t make sense to me. Most packs put those gates in so the humans that don’t know about our kind don’t accidentally wander onto the lands and see things that they shouldn’t see.On our slow drive up the winding driveway towards the packhouse, we kept an eye out for possible patrols that might stop us. There were none. What we did see just confirmed that things weren’t right. I’m not saying that the people we saw were doing anything wrong. Everyone is entitled to live their life in a way that makes them happy. That being said, as long as all involved are consenti
Raven POVThe two of us sat at the kitchen table colouring together while we waited for the noodles to cook. After we ate, Emma picked out a movie from the small collection of kid DVDs that I had been able to get for her. I got her comfortable with her blanket on the couch while I tried to figure a way out of here. I tried picking and prying at the lock on my ankle to get the cuff off first. The only thing I accomplished with that effort, though, was giving myself another cut.I found where the chain was attached to a hook in the ceiling, but even standing on a chair I couldn’t reach it well enough. Not that it would have made much of a difference. He had used another padlock like the one on my ankle to attach one of the links of the chain to the eye hook that he had screwed into one of the ceiling beams. I even tried twisting the chain to see if I could get the eye hook to unscrew. But because of my height, I was at the wrong angle and couldn’t get enough leverage. After my failed at
