LOGINJacob POV
I took a bit before I felt confident enough that I could walk through the party without embarrassingly showing how much this woman turned me on. That was all because of standing there with my arms wrapped around Raven, but it was worth it. Anything that was going to prolong having her press against my body was worth it, though. When I figured that I was getting to the point of pushing my luck, I reluctantly released Raven from my hold and took her hand. I started walking back towards the fire, enjoying even the simple touch of our joined hands.
“Do you want to go home or stay and talk with the others, Princess?” I asked as we drew near the fire. I was not sure what I wanted her answer to be. On one hand, I didn’t want to stay here and share her with anyone. But on the other I didn’t want to take her home and have our night end.
She scanned the area, probably looking for her friend Sara. I had a feeling, though, that if what I thought was happening, Raven most likely wouldn’t be hearing from Sara until at least tomorrow afternoon. “I think I’d like to leave. If that is OK with you?” She answered, turning her head down to avoid looking at me and sounding nervous. As if she expected me to be mad.
I stopped, turned and pulled her close. I hooked my finger under her chin, tilting her gaze up to mine. Goddess, she has such beautiful blue eyes.
“Why did it sound as if you were scared to give me that answer?” Raven tried to turn her head, but I gently tightened my hold on her chin. “Raven, Princess, I know you don’t know me very well, but I was brought up to respect women. I have a very healthy fear of what my own mother would do to me if she ever thought that I had done something that caused a woman to fear my reaction to something they said. So if you ever give me the honour of taking you out on a real date, please don’t be scared to speak your true feelings around me even if you think I may not like them. I’d rather know your true thoughts on things than what you think I want to hear. OK?”
She blinked at me a few times. It was in that moment that I realized that no man, maybe no one, had ever shown her the kind of respect that I had just talked about. It made my protective side flare up. I felt Coal push forward. I had to suppress a growl and close my eyes so she didn’t see them change. I took a deep breath, inhaling her tantalizing orange smell to both calm myself and Coal down. With my eyes still closed, I felt those tingles that seem to get stronger the more we touch slide along my jaw as Raven placed her hands on my face.
“For some strange reason, I believe you. And yes, I would like you to take me on a real date.” That was how one of the best weeks of my life started.
It started that night when I took her home. I didn’t drop her off at her house. We parked a few houses down and sat and talked. We talked until the first pinkish-orange rays of sunrise started to peek out from the horizon.
The guys and I were supposed to return home the day after the lake party, but I decided to stay behind for the week. I wanted to spend as much time as possible with Raven before she left. Raven’s classes weren’t starting until the second week in September, which would have given us at least a month together. But she had been able to get a part-time job near her college that she could start early. She had made all of these plans before we met, so even though I may not have liked it, I wasn’t going to ask her to change her life plans for me. I wanted to stay in her life as much as possible at the same time giving her the space to become her own person. If I pushed too much, she might push me out altogether, which would make it very hard to be near her when she turned eighteen.
I am starting to have a whole new respect for what Zane has been going through. Waiting the next few months that I have before I can find out if Coal is right about her being a possible mate is going to be hard. How Zane has lasted four years is beyond me. It does give me a few months, though, to figure out how I can approach her about moving to Blu Ridge to live with me if she agrees to be with me. It will also give me time to come up with a way that won’t freak her out to explain to her that I’m a werewolf. Add to that the fact that she would help me run a pack of werewolves.
But for now, she has worked so hard to get where she is. She deserves to do this on her own if she wants to. It is her way of proving to herself that she is more than what her worthless parents have tried to make her believe she is.
Raven had saved up and bought a used phone, something she had never had before. Even if she hadn’t bought herself one, I had been planning on getting her one so that we could stay in touch. Sara’s parents had also helped her to get a good used car. At first Raven had refused it. But between Sara, her parents and myself, we finally convinced her to keep it. Letting me and Sara’s parents pay for the insurance for the next couple of years was another story, but we did it.
Jacob POV“That would be me,” Craig says. “I overheard the orders that they were given, and I told Chris. We figured that the only way we were going to get any help was to ask the two of you for it.”“We weren’t sure at first if we could trust you. After all, you had come to the party tonight. But we were going to give you the benefit of the doubt since they had plans to kidnap you. We figured that meant one of two things. You were either competition for whatever Fred is doing, or he thinks you’re going to stop him.” Chris explains. “So we then convinced these two that we could be of use to their mission. We were sitting in the backseat of the SUV when the two of you left the packhouse. We injected them with a mild sedative and then followed you, hoping that the sedative wouldn’t wear off before we got them off pack lands.” Chris says.Liam put his arm around his brother, pulled him for a side hug and kissed the top of his head. “Thanks, Bro.”“OK, what I want to know is why were you
Jacob POV“Ok, we’ll hear you out. Meet us at the coffee shop in town.” I said. All four gave us a nod and climbed back into their vehicle. Zane and I climbed back into ours and waited for them to start down the road. I picked my phone up off the floor as it started to ring for the fourth time since I had dropped it. “What the hell happened?” My Dad shouted, with panic in his voice from the other end.“We’re fine, Dad. We got stopped by some of the wolves from Fred’s pack. They are asking us for help.”“You’re sure the two of you are OK?” I hear Mom ask from somewhere behind Dad.“Yes, I’m sure. We are on our way to talk to them now in a public place. I’ll call you back after to let you know what we find out.” I said as Zane parked the car in front of the same coffee shop we had met Ray and his family at.“OK, be safe. We’ll be there with reinforcements as soon as possible. I’ll call you when we land.” Dad said before ending the call.Three of the four were already sitting inside when
Jacob POVAs Zane and I drove away from the packhouse, I put Dad on speakerphone, and we filled him in on what had been going on. It made me sick to have to repeat what we had seen to him. “I know it pained the two of you to leave them there, but you are right. There was no way the two of you could have gotten them and yourselves out alive.” Dad said when I was finished.“Dad, have you ever heard of anything like that before?” I asked, still not completely comprehending what had been going on.“From what you are describing, it sounds as if he is trying to burn their marks off,” Dad said.“What?” Zane asked.“It’s an old archaic practise that some Alphas used to use to control their packs. If a couple that the Alpha didn’t approve of marked each other, he would use his Alpha command to make one or both have sex with someone else.”“Shit,” I mumbled.“The two of you do remember that, unlike a lot of the myths that say when you cheat on your mate, they are the one that feels the pain. It
Jacob POVPossible Trauma TriggersZane and I stood there watching helplessly as Alex struggled against his restraints. The table shook. I could see where the cuffs were digging into his wrists.“Fine, have it your way. I will start.” Fred says as he starts to slide his free hand up and under the skirt of the woman on his lap. She starts screaming and fighting with everything she has. That is when I notice that her mate mark is starting to turn red.“NOOOOO, Fred, stop. Don’t do this.” Alex screams as he starts to fight harder to get free.“Oh, I am going to do this. The two of you are going to be used as an example of what happens when the people of this pack forget who is in charge. You were all warned that there was no longer going to be mates. Every female in this pack belongs to me to do with as I see fit. No one is fucking them unless I permit them. And the ones I don’t want can be used by the rest of the pack for entertainment. They will all be taught how to be good little subm
Jacob POVPossible Trauma TriggersThe second we set foot on the pack lands of Alpha Fred Jr., I could sense that there were all kinds of wrong here. We had not seen any patrols along the road on our drive towards the main gate. There had been no one at the large iron gates that stood wide open at the entrance of the pack lands just off the main road. It was like this Fred guy thought that he was invincible or something. It didn’t make sense to me. Most packs put those gates in so the humans that don’t know about our kind don’t accidentally wander onto the lands and see things that they shouldn’t see.On our slow drive up the winding driveway towards the packhouse, we kept an eye out for possible patrols that might stop us. There were none. What we did see just confirmed that things weren’t right. I’m not saying that the people we saw were doing anything wrong. Everyone is entitled to live their life in a way that makes them happy. That being said, as long as all involved are consenti
Raven POVThe two of us sat at the kitchen table colouring together while we waited for the noodles to cook. After we ate, Emma picked out a movie from the small collection of kid DVDs that I had been able to get for her. I got her comfortable with her blanket on the couch while I tried to figure a way out of here. I tried picking and prying at the lock on my ankle to get the cuff off first. The only thing I accomplished with that effort, though, was giving myself another cut.I found where the chain was attached to a hook in the ceiling, but even standing on a chair I couldn’t reach it well enough. Not that it would have made much of a difference. He had used another padlock like the one on my ankle to attach one of the links of the chain to the eye hook that he had screwed into one of the ceiling beams. I even tried twisting the chain to see if I could get the eye hook to unscrew. But because of my height, I was at the wrong angle and couldn’t get enough leverage. After my failed at
