LOGINChristine POV
Harlan looks at me, surprised that I said such to him. But I do not care no matter how scary his cold eyes seem.
He never thought he’d hear such ruthless words from me, I’ve always done as he wished, even doing more for him as long as he asked.
He knows how scared I get with needles piercing into my skin and how the injury hardly heals for some strange reasons and yet he never cared. All he cared was my continuous blood donation to her.
I have donated so many times for him, for Rebecca. Prioritizing his happiness to mine.
He hesitates, his piercing eyes meeting mine, those alpha eyes that make shiver run down my spine most times.
Just then, Rebeca’s voice comes with tears.
“Christine…” Rebecca cuts in, tears running down her innocent-looking eyes, “What… what do you mean? Are you cursing me to die? I know you’ve helped me a lot and if you do not want to help me anymore, just say it and I’ll accept my fate instead of wishing me death so soon.” She turns to Harlan and then continues. “Christine hates me so much and she’s seeing me as a home wrecker now.” She adds. Her consciousness lets her expose her intentions. Of course she is a home wrecker.
I look at her coldly. Her acting is top-notch. She fools Harlan every time.
Maybe… he wants to be fooled. His wolf still pines for that old bond of them both, no matter how many times he claims it’s severed. The bond keeps going stronger between them.
Then i respond. “Whoever wants to donate can donate. I won’t.”
Rebecca clings to Harlan’s arm, her voice full of grievance. “Harlan, did you hear? She’s cursing me to die. She wants me to be lifeless close to my mother, that would make her happy, right?”
Rebecca’s mother has been comatose for five years, ever since she shoved Harlan out of the path of a rampaging rogue wolf during pack war. The fight was brutal and her wolf never woke up.
Because of that, Harlan carries the guilt, treating Rebecca with special favor, acting so indebted to Rebecca for losing her mom while trying to save Harlan.
Rebecca exploits it every time she drags up her mother's condition, blackmailing him emotionally. And Harlan indulges her every time, being moved by her acting.
But this time, something in his expression shifts. He frowns slightly, like a frustration when she mentions her mother, his jaw tightening, his jaw muscle twitching.
He’d never forget that day five years ago, when the rogue attacked him, Rebecca's mother shoved him aside and took the full attack as a silver bullet passed into her stomach instead of his, she fell to the ground in the pool of her own blood.
But his words snaps me out of my thoughts. “Christine, donate to Rebecca one more time. I promise this is the last time.” He looks up at me, those eyes reflecting my face, unreadable. One last time? Nah. That was what he said the other time but he still left me, running back to her.
I really am stupid. To still have hope for him, after all these moons.
He always makes the same choice, she’s his choice. And I’m always the one he abandons. Harlan really treats her well…
I’d once thought he’d learned to love, that his wolf might recognize mine in the quiet moments we shared, maybe he would reconsider me after sacrificing a lot for him.
But now, with his usual cool indifference, he makes it clear, he would never like me, not as a mate, not even as a true lover or his Luna, one after his heart.
I look back to Harlan. “If you want her alive, then you can donate yours to her.”
I say and he sighs in frustration. “You know your blood is rare and you are the only one who can donate to her. My blood will kill her and weaken her wolf.” He says.
“What do we do? If she doesn’t donate, I’ll die!” Rebecca panics, her voice rising, clutching at his arm harder and dramatically. “Harlan, you promised my mom you’d take care of me… you are the reason she’s in coma and can’t donate her blood to me..” she says.
“You won’t die. I’ll find someone else right now,” Harlan says coolly, trying to assure her.
Rebecca gapes at him. “What if you can’t find anyone? Christine has donated so many times, she’s a perfect match for me. Her blood ties to the ancient lineages, her wolf’s essence meshes with mine. Why is she hating me and want me dead?”
He doesn’t respond, I see how helpless he looks as he pulls her into his arms.
Tears pours immediately in her eyes, spilling down her cheeks in dramatic streaks. “Fine, fine, if you won’t care for me, I’ll go find someone to help. Maybe Elder Lila!” She says, wiping her tears. As he tries to stop her. “Listen, you don’t have to dress yourself over this. Christine will donate to you. She doesn’t have a choice. I’m sure she can’t bear the shame when I reject her in front of everyone if she fails to donate to you… I’ll have the doctors take it from her with no choice.” He says.
CHRISTINESleep didn’t come easily that night and every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing again. The document Kael had pushed across the desk, the search notice, my name printed clearly beneath the description and the quiet certainty in his voice when he said Moonfall was a difficult city for someone without allies.I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling of my room. Nathan was asleep in his own room already and I could hear his faint snore earlier, but sometime during the night even that sound had disappeared beneath the restless noise in my head.I suddenly felt a dull sensation in my chest. It was faint and almost like a memory.I knew it was the mate bond again.Weeks ago, that connection had felt like a living thread tying my heart to Harlan’s. Now it was distant and thin but it was still there which meant one thing.Somewhere out there, Harlan was still looking frantically for me, the search notice flying around the city is enough to prove that.I shut my eyes
KAELI had expected many reactions from Christine Hale—shock, anger or even quiet satisfaction but hesitation had not been one of them. Most wolves in her position would have accepted my offer without thinking. A woman publicly abandoned by her mate during a ceremony meant to bind two packs together—that kind of humiliation usually burns deep enough to turn into something far more dangerous.I had assumed she would want revenge but instead, she looked at me like the idea of destroying Harlan Stone meant nothing to her. That alone made her interesting. My fingers tapped lightly against the armrest of the chair as I replayed the moment in my mind. Most wolves would have seen my offer as an opportunity but Christine saw it as something else entirely. My wolf shifted slightly beneath my skin, restless not in warning but in curiosity. She had walked out of my office without fear, without desperation, and most importantly, without begging. That was rare, especially for someone who had only
CHRISTINEFor a few seconds after Kael finished speaking, I simply stared at him.His words hung in the air between us— ‘we bring Alpha Harlan Stone to his knees.’My fingers slowly tightened around the edge of the document, the idea sounded simple when he said it like that but the man he was talking about wasn’t just another Alpha. He was the man I had loved the man I had planned to spend the rest of my life with and the man who had shattered that future in front of an entire pack.I placed the paper back on the desk.“You’re asking me to turn my past into a weapon,” I said quietly and Kael didn’t look offended but amused.“I’m asking you to use your experience,” he corrected.“That experience involves a man I once trusted.”“And that same man publicly abandoned you.” His tone remained calm and his words still landed hard.I met with his gaze,“That doesn’t mean I want to destroy him.” I said and Kael leaned back slightly in his chair.“Interesting,” He remarked. His golden eyes stud
CHRISTINEThe moment my eyes landed on the first line, my fingers tightened around the paper. It wasn’t a contract or an approval letter, It wasn’t anything I expected. It looked like an intelligence notice, it was a search notice. The bold heading at the top made my stomach twist.Subject: Christine HaleMy pulse skipped once as I began to read the content of the paper. Below it were several lines of information—my name, my former pack, a brief description.Beneath the paper was a statement requesting information regarding my whereabouts.I slowly lowered the page and for a moment the room was completely silent.I lifted my eyes to Kael unsure of what to say.“You’re being searched for,” he said calmly, his voice carrying no surprise or judgment, just a simple statement of fact.I placed the paper back on the desk carefully.“I can see that.”Kael leaned back slightly in his chair, golden eyes studying me with quiet interest. The expression on his face was unreadable. It wasn't pity
CHRISTINE Nathan was still staring at the envelope like it might explode, I took it from his hand.“Relax,” I said and Nathan looked at me like I’d just said something ridiculous.“Relax?” he repeated. “That’s the Alpha’s crest,”I broke the seal. The paper inside was thick and expensive, the kind people used when they wanted their words taken seriously. I unfolded it and read the short message and my expression didn’t change.“Well, what does it say?” Nathan asked and instead of answering, I handed the letter to him.His eyes moved across the page once, “That’s it?” he said finally. The letter was short,Christine Hale,I’ve reached a decision regarding your request. Come to my office tomorrow morning. — Kael.Nathan lowered the paper slowly.“That was fast.”I walked past him into the living room and set my bag on the table.“Yes,” I said.Nathan followed me, still holding the letter like it might suddenly reveal hidden lines. “You only met him yesterday.”“I know.”“And he’s alr
CHRISTINEA faint chill went down my spine and Nathan followed my gaze through the reflection in the glass doors.“You saw that too, right?” he murmured.“Yes.”Across the street, the three Moonblade warriors stood exactly where Nathan had pointed them out. Their arms were folded behind their backs, feet planted firmly on the pavement and their eyes were fixed on the building or more specifically on me.Nathan slowly released my arm. “So what does that mean?”I pushed the glass door open and stepped inside.“It means they want us to know they’re there.”Nathan followed quickly, “That’s not comforting.”The lobby buzzed with activitires—assistants moving quickly between elevators, merchants speaking in low voices and the quiet hum of business that never seemed to stop in this city.I couldn't stop thinking of the reason why those warriors were keeping eyes on me. Kael obviously sent them but for what reason? Does he see me as a threat since he and Harlan are rivals?Nathan glanced back
CHRISTINEMoonfall City did not welcome newcomers easily and that was something I learned within the first two days.By the end of the first week, it had become painfully obvious and by the end of the second week, I finally understood something important.Moonfall City was not a place where you sim
CHRISTINEHe didn’t answer immediately. He didn’t need to, his words settled slowly, like ash.“You just have to calm down first, I know this is going to be very hard for you to take in but just cool off first.” He said calmly. I was in complete shock, this can't be possible, there must be a mista
CHRISTINEMoonfall City was visible long before we got there. In the distance, its tall towers stood like dark silver teeth against the sky.Even from miles away I could smell a dense mixture of scents in the air from different packs with different intentions.A lot of trade caravans filled the road
KAELThe door closed behind Christine Hale and for a moment, I didn’t move. I simply stood there watching the empty space she had just walked through, as I replayed our conversation in my mind. Most people who entered my office tried to impress me within the first few minutes. They boasted about th
