Aeliana's POV

Colt pushed us faster, and we burst through a line of trees into a small clearing where our scout stood in human form, pointing ahead.

"There," he said. "About half a mile north. I can see them."

I shifted immediately, disregarding modesty and protocol, and ran to where he was pointing. In the distance, I could make out shapes moving through the trees. Small figures, larger ones, all moving slowly.

Too slow.

"Let's go," I said, already shifting back. "They need help."

"Wait," Colt cautioned. "We don't know who else might be with them. They could be some of Annalise's people."

"I don't care. That's our Alpha, and he needs us."

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 73

Aeliana's POV"Because it means you're not being completely overwhelmed. There's still a boundary between you and the entity, even if that boundary is permeable." He looked up from his notes. "The Vessels who survived the awakening all reported similar experiences...they remained aware even when the power was in control. Those who lost that awareness are those who were completely subsumed and never came back."The information should have been comforting, but it wasn't. "So I'm aware enough to watch myself disappear. That's not exactly reassuring.""No, but it gives us something to work with." Theron closed his notebook. "Aeliana, I'm going to be blunt with you. What you're going through is incredibly rare and incredibly dangerous. Most Vessels don't survive the awakening process. But the fact that you're still fighting, sti

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 72

Caelan's POVI exchanged glances with Jolene, weighing how much to reveal. But if Theron is going to help us, he needs the full picture."She's been having dreams...memories that aren't hers or the ones she might have forgotten; sometimes she sees herself as a child running in the woods. She has never talked about this, even before she was cursed. Now she hardly remembers memories before she was cursed, which we attributed to the curse, but she grew up an orphan, and now she easily remembers having parents, though the dream isn't clear. She knows things she's never learned and can understand languages she's never studied. Some nights ago, she floated off the bed while sleeping, surrounded by golden symbols, and something spoke through her. "I kept my voice steady despite the fear the memory evoked." Two days ago, she had a

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 71

Caelan's POVDr. Theron Ashwood was not what I expected.Jolene had described him as a scholar, and I'd pictured someone elderly, bookish, and probably fragile from years spent hunched over ancient texts. Instead, the man who stood when we entered the guest quarters looked to be in his late thirties, tall and lean with sharp features and eyes that held an intensity that immediately put me on guard. His dark hair was streaked with silver at the temples, and he dressed more like a biker than an academic. But it was his presence that struck me most...there was a contained energy about him, like a predator pretending to be harmless."Alpha Caelan," he said, inclining his head respectfully. "Thank you for allowing me into your territory. I know my arrival is unexpected.

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 70

Caelan's POVThe message came at dawn, delivered by one of the perimeter guards who'd intercepted a lone traveler approaching pack territory."Says his name is Dr. Theron Ashwood," the guard reported, standing at attention in my office. "Claims he's here at Jolene's request to consult on a matter of ancient magic. He's carrying documentation that corresponds with Jolene, and he knew the password she told me to expect."I exchanged glances with Jolene, who'd arrived minutes earlier looking both excited and nervous. "That was fast. You only contacted him two days ago.""Theron doesn't waste time when something interests him," Jolene said. "And I may have mentioned that this was a matter of life and death involving a potential Vessel."

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 69

Caelan's POV"What was. What is. What will be again." Aeliana's hand moved, her finger tracing the symbols on the page. "The war never ended. It only sleeps. And now the darkness wakes, and the light must wake to meet it.""You're not helping," I said, frustration making my voice sharp. "Stop speaking in riddles and tell us plainly, how do we keep Aeliana safe? How do we stop the power from consuming her?""You cannot stop the awakening. You can only hope she is strong enough to survive it." The voice carries on with regret. "Twenty-three came before. Twenty-three fell. But she is different. She has what they lacked.""What? What does she have?"But Aeliana's eyes were already clearing, the golden glow fading from them. She blinked, looking confused, and her hand jerked away from the book like it had burned her."What happened?" she asked, her voice her own again. "I was looking at the she

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 68

Caelan's POV"The text says she had a mate," Jolene interrupted quietly. She is reading another section of the journal. "It says her mate tried everything to save her, that he nearly went mad with grief when she walked into that forest. It says..." She paused. "It says the mate bond wasn't enough because what she carried was older than the bond and older than wolves themselves."The dread in my stomach became cold and heavy. "There has to be more. I mean, there has to be something that tells us how to fight this, how to help her control it.""Maybe if we knew what the power actually is," Aeliana said. She'd gone pale, even if her voice was steady. "Every reference talks about ancient power, old wars, light, and darkness. But what does that mean? What am I carrying?"
