Katla

“Katla,” the voice came on the wind. “Katla, rise and claim your throne.”

“Who’s there?” I called back.

“We are waiting, Katla, waiting for you to call upon us,” it replied back.

“But who are you?”

“We are you, you are us, we are one.”

I looked around, I was standing on a frozen field, no, not standing, hovering. A wild wind whipped around me, and shimmering white fabric swirled around my frame. A warmth radiated from me and my pale skin was marked with luminescent tattoos in an ancient language.

“Unite them before it is too late,” the voice commanded.

“Unite who? What do you want from me?”

“Go North. Your true home waits,” the voice said.

“But the Night Flame. We have to find it.”

“Go North,” it was an order and the voice of expected me to submit.

“The Night Flame—“

“Cannot be controlled until you know who you are. Go North.” Then, the voice was gone and sunlight flooded through the windows of Silver Tower, rousing me from the dream that felt very real.

“Good morning, sleepyhead,” Damien walked into the room wearing his grey joggers with his chiseled frame on display. Wetness started to creep between my legs.

“What time is it?” I asked.

“Afternoon, actually,” he said, “You’ve been asleep since we got in the car. Did you know you talk in your sleep?”

“That doesn’t surprise me,” I mused, “It’s been a weird couple days with equally vivid dreams.”

“Want some coffee?” Damien was already holding out a cup and walking it to me. He gave it to me, then trotted to the other side of the bed. He flopped next to me, sloshing the coffee, and propped up on his side, looking at me grinning. “Do you know how magnificent you are?” He asked, tucking a piece of my hair behind my ear.

“But I lost it. It’s gone,” I said, looking into the brown swirling liquid. “I was so stupid.”

“Katla, it’s not gone forever, and it is safe. Whoever wants it wouldn’t suspect Brian, and Peter wouldn’t have given it to someone he didn’t trust.” Damien had a way of comforting me that I didn’t understand. “Mate,” Aurelia reminded me.

“But—“

“Enough beating yourself up. Let’s get some food in you,” he said.

“Actually, I’ve got another idea,” I looked at him hungrily, but not for food.

“Oh?” he grinned as I put the coffee on the table next to the bed and turned back to him, and playfully shoved him back then straddled his hips.

I pulled the sweater from yesterday up over my head, then got a whiff of my underarm. “Oof. On second thought, I think a shower is in order,” I looked at him sheepishly.

“Your wish is my command,” he grinned. I climbed off his hips and we started walking to the shower. I was imagining how good the steam would feel on my achy, tired limbs. Just as we were at the steps leading to the basin, Damien froze.

I looked at him, and after a moment of silence, he said, “I’m going to let you do this one, Lyulf and Rolf have a lead on Peter’s killer, and I need to call Alpha Erik.”

“My guess is it leads back to Viti,” I said darkly.

Damien gave a nod, and said, “I’m sure he’s tied into it somehow, but Katla, I don’t want you to worry about him right now. You will claim your place, and I will be by your side.”

“You can’t promise that,” I said, eyes suddenly burning with tears. “I told my dad that he would be by my side right before…”

“Whatever the Goddess wills is what will be,” he told me, “And Katla, he is with you. He was with you last night, remember?” I nodded and brushed the tears off my cheeks.

“I’m going to follow up on the lead,” he said, hugging me, “You relax and get clean. I’ll tell you more when you’re done.” I nodded and walked numbly into the shower. Somehow, the waterfall didn’t feel as good as I thought it would a few minutes earlier.

Katla A couple hours later, Damien, Clarissa, Rolf, and I took the elevator to the top of the building, walked up a short flight of stairs, and exited through a rooftop door. In the center of a large red “H” surrounded by a circle was a machine with long spinning blades that shot from the top of it, and smaller vertical ones at the end where it narrowed into a tail like a shark. The larger body had windows and two men sat in the front, waiting and talking to one another, “Are you ok?” Damien asked. “Yes? No? I’m not sure,” I answered honestly. “I know we need to go North. I know that’s where I’ll get my answers.” Damien took my hands and pressed my mother’s necklace into them. “Katla, you will get you answers, and I will be by your side while we find them together and reclaim your pack.” I looked up at him and he pulled me against his chest. The Moonstone seemed different, less dull and more polished. It had an energy that I hadn’t n

Katla Damien looked up as I walked into his office. “I was just speaking with Alpha Erik,” he told me. “There are changes in alliances, and he would like us to attend a summit of sorts in a week to discuss the Iceclaw situation.” I looked at him, not sure how to respond, and I think he sensed my unease because he continued. “I told Erik that it would be your decision on your attendance or if you would like to allow the rumor of your death to continue.” “Are you sure he can be trusted?” “Yes. You have more allies than you realize,” he assured. “Was he the lead on who killed Peter,” I asked. “Sort of. Erik is very good at dealing in information. A lot of people write him off because he’s a shameless gossip, but if you ever need to know anything, he is a reliable source.” I thought about this for a minute, then asked, “If he deals in information, what does he expect in return? It seems that he has plenty that he could use to blackmail powerful individuals if he deals in informati

Damien As I walked out of the room, I pulled out my phone and found Erik’s name. He picked up immediately. “It seems someone wasn’t entirely honest yesterday,” he said, clearly amused. “Well, it is a delicate situation,” I said back smoothly, “And, with shifting alliances, I’m sure you understand my need to withhold information.” “Indeed. I’m sure if I was in your position, I would do the same,” Erik said, “So, the Princess lives.” “Before I confirm or deny that, where do your alliances stand?” “Evergreen stands with the true princess, the one foretold, risen from Iceclaw and returned to the North,” Erik said fervently. “She is alive,” I confirmed, “And here, with me.” “Rodolfo told me as much,” he said, “And will you honor your engagement now that Iceclaw has fallen?” “More than ever. She is my mate,” I told him. “The prophecy does not speak of a mate, though,” he shot back. “How can you be sure?” “I am sure of both, that she is the promised princess, descended from the God

Katla I had never wanted to betray my instincts so badly. Even though I met Peter less than 24 hours ago, he mattered to Damien, and he was suffering. I had to remind myself that it wasn’t happening now, it was already done, and our presence would be of no comfort to a dying shadow of the past. My instincts were telling me if I didn’t follow the Night Flame, whatever power this was that my ancestors were flowing through me would end as abruptly as it had started. Brian ducked down a side street next to the alley As we moved down the street, though, Damien and I looked at each other when we heard an unmistakable scream. Brian hesitated for a moment, turned back, then looked at the necklace. “What the fuck do I do with this, and who wants it?” Then, at the top of his lungs he shouted, “FUCK! Fuck this fucking fuck.” He turned away from the screaming, running much faster down the dimly lit street until it came to a main road that was well lit and clearly in a nicer part of town on th

  • The Alpha’s Moonstone   Chapter 42

Damien As I watched the world shift around me, taking me several hours earlier, an image of Peter skulked past, unaware of our standing in the middle of the alley. As unbelievable as this was, the more remarkable vision was Katla. The was the moon kissed and radiated from her was magnificent. How could this have been hidden from her? Seeing this disheveled version of Peter, one who was clearly scared, desperate, and by all accounts based on the found note, remorseful, I felt genuine sorrow for this human who I had known for years. I wanted to understand what led him here, to this moment and who had killed him so brutally. It was clearly the work of wolves, so Pack Law would be invoked once they were found. Katla started to walk forward, but they weren’t her movements. She was usually graceful and moved in a way that was effortlessly seductive and playful at the same time. I don’t think she even realized how her movements impacted others, but this was different. She was otherworldly
