After practice wraps up, Grant, Colton, and I head for the packhouse. We shift, and I fill them in on the way back. “Did your dad tell you anything this morning?” I asked Colton. “Not really. Just said he had to check the border and take care of a situation. You know he won’t give anything up.” “Damn. I just feel weird about this. Our dad’s keeping secrets, a beta from another pack helping two of his pack mates leave in the middle of the night? There’s something going on.” “You’ve got a point. If they needed to transfer them, the proper paperwork and everything would have been processed. And they wouldn’t cross over in the middle of the night.” Colton wonders aloud. Grant looks at us like we’re idiots. “I think you’re missing a big point here. If they were in danger in the pack or causing problems, why wouldn’t Alpha Walt have contacted Alpha Cam? Or better yet, why wasn’t he there? Who gives a damn about paperwork? They literally have each other’s phone numbers. A quick phone call and an armed transport would’ve taken a couple of hours at most.” We arrive at the packhouse and shift back at the edge of the woods. I grab my shorts from a bin we leave by the oak tree that we used to play in as kids. I look down, deep in thought. They both have valid points. I can’t shake this feeling that trouble is brewing. “Well I, for one, care about the proper paperwork. Shit gets disorganized when you fly by the seat of your pants.” Colton jokingly chips in. He definitely got his mom’s planning skills. Uncle Dave is far from having it all together. “Yeah yeah. You have fun with all of that. Some of us have better ways to spend our time. Speaking of which, what did Jaqueline have to say? I saw her lingering around the almighty alpha,” Grant says with a wink. They both know how much I hate clingy females. “She wished me luck. Not that I needed it. I was distracted and still came out on top.” Trying to push Colt’s buttons is probably my favorite pastime. He’s so easy to get riled up. “Dick. They called it, and you know it! Besides you were distracted for the first five seconds of the match. It’s not like you have your head in your ass all day.” Grant and I share a laugh at Colton’s irritation and head to the showers. The Beta and Gamma families share the floor beneath ours, but they have houses of their own that they normally stay in. Their dad’s offices are down there. Maybe they can get some more information out in the meantime. After my shower I get dressed in my usual: jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I comb my hair, put on a little cologne, and I’m ready to go. I meet Mom in the kitchen. As usual, she has a biscuit and coffee in hand, waiting for me. “Mom, I’ve got something important to talk about tonight. Dad will be at dinner, right?” “Yes dear. Wait. Have you found your mate? Wait, no. Don’t tell me. I want to see the shock on your father’s face. Don’t tell him I told you but I bet him that you’d find her before your birthday.” “Mom it’s nothing like that,” I roll my eyes. Ever since I got my wolf, she’s been on eggshells waiting for me to find my mate. She claims it’s because she wants the best for me, but I know she’s got mixed feelings about it. The amount of times I’ve been scolded for being a “player” and “not valuing a woman’s heart” is insane. She acts like I’m out breaking hearts left and right. “If you say so,” she gives me a kiss on the temple, just like always. “I hope you have a great day, Brady. Don’t forget shifter training at 4 today. Your dad expects you to be on time, ready to roll.” “Yes ma’am. Love you mom!” I call over my shoulder as I head out the door. I hear her say it back and head downstairs to meet the guys. Since the school is a few miles away, we usually drive in my truck. Grant thought it was hilarious that I didn’t want a sports car, like most young alphas. However, I’d rather have something I can put to use, not just a flashy piece of metal. Grant and Colton come out shortly after. “Dad was in his office, so whatever is going on must be handled now.” Grant informs us. “I’m going to ask Dad about it tonight. Just gotta get through shifter practice first. I think he’s gonna kick ass today after the stunt you two idiots pulled last week.” Dad takes shifter training extremely seriously; after you get your wolf and a year of training, you start patrols. Last Friday, Grant and Colton had the bright idea to nip at the girls every time our dads weren’t looking. Unfortunately, my dad caught on quickly why the girls kept yelping and caught Grant red handed. Colton got ratted out by one of the older girls who we didn’t know found her mate that week and almost got the shit beat out of him when her mate found out. “You two idiots just love making my life more difficult.” “That is our job!” Colton jokes with a dumb grin on his face. “Just shut up and get in the truck.”~ Lindsey ~ Sunlight peeks through my window, waking me up. I must have finally dozed off sometime last night. I tossed and turned for what felt like hours. Dad saw right through me last night and refused to let me stay up watching TV, knowing I was planning an all nighter. The little sleep that I did get l did not include any more nightmares. I guess I should count that as a blessing. I head out of the bedroom and see Dad in khaki dress pants, brown dress shoes, a white button up, and a blue tie. “You look nice,” I tell Dad sleepily, as I wipe my eyes. “Oh good morning kiddo! Sorry if I woke you up. I didn’t make breakfast, sorry.” He comes around to give me a hug and a kiss on the crown of my head. “I just wanted to see you before you left. Did you leave any coffee?” I asked, a mix of hope and desperation in my voice. I need caffeine desperately. “Yeah I’ve only had one cup. I heard you last night, so I made a full pot. Did you get any rest?” The concern in his v
~ Brady ~ Mom has dinner ready by the time we arrive upstairs. She loves to cook, but if she’s busy she lets the omegas in the kitchen bring something up for us. She tells me all the time that a luna must be willing to do anything that she would ask someone else to do. I hope my luna will be as amazing as her. “Ew you two stink. Go shower off while I finish setting the table.” She scrunches up her nose as she fixes the tablecloth. We both hit the showers and come back a few minutes later to an absolute feast. Mom really outdid herself: pork chops, potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls, the whole nine yards. “Dessert should be ready by the time we finish eating,” she says as she walks over to set an alarm on the stove just in case. “It looks delicious Maci,” Dad says before giving her a kiss and pulling out her chair. “Thank you dear. Now fix your plates. We have a lot to discuss this evening.” Mom commands a room almost better than Dad does. We sit down and fix our plate
~Brady~I’m pretty sure my jaw dropped in shock. How would that even be possible? “Dad they would be able to communicate through the pack link or fight back at least. There’s no way he is trafficking wolves.” I’m trying to logically think despite my dad never spreading gossip. He doesn’t make accusations without evidence. “They take the girls before they’re 18 and get their wolves. Apparently Walt has been telling them that someone senses that they are going to be their mate or promise them a position as a luna or another high ranking mate.” “So what did they promise the girl that came here?” I asked. If it’s true, we might have earned the wrath of multiple packs. “Don’t know. She told her cousin that Walt found her mate and that he would pick her up within the week.” He almost looks like he’s in pain. Dad watched his mom be tortured once when the pack was attacked while Pops was away. He was only 5, but it made a lasting impact on him. He’s been a fierce protector of our she-wolv
~Lindsey~ We ate our dinner in near silence. After the episode I just had, the shock was still wearing off. My stomach was tied in knots as my mind replayed my dream over and over again. Those three words haunted my soul. “You’re all mine.” I’d rather die than be his, which may be my fate if he ever finds me. Dad had to go into work tomorrow to fill out some paperwork for his new job, so I’d be home alone again. This time, however, I’d do whatever it takes to stay awake. No dreams. No nightmares. I’m already tempted to stay up all night tonight. The thought of that black hair and those piercing grey eyes cutting into my very soul and trying to carve me into someone smaller, more obedient, more docile, shakes me to my core. May I never see that bastard again for as long as I live. And please let the moon goddess not be so cruel as to choose him as my mate. “Lin, do you need to talk about your dream? You’ve barely touched your food, which tells me you’re worried about someth
~Lindsey~ I hear the front door open. “Dad is that you?” No response. “Dad?” I call out again. I slowly make my way around the wall that blocks the view from the kitchen to the front door. It’s wide open. “Dad?!” I call again, panic beginning to enter my voice. A hand covers my mouth while another wraps around my waist. “Did you really think you could escape me?” a cruel, familiar voice whispers in my ear. “I’ve already taken care of your dad. Now you have no one. You belong to me.” I struggle as much as possible to no avail. He’s strong, much stronger than me. I twist, turn, wiggle. I try to bite him, kick him, pinch him. Nothing works. I continue my struggle, only to hear a sinister chuckle escape his lips. “Struggle all you want. You’re all mine Lindsey.” “No! NO!!!” I yell, continuing to fight against him. I scream with all my might. Suddenly I sit straight up, panting, looking into my father’s eyes. “Lindsey? Oh thank the goddess you’re ok!” Dad crash
~Brady~ Dad and I head back for the end of training. We all usually go for a run and let our wolves have a moment to bond. Everyone has started to gather outside, just a few stragglers finishing up their matches. “Come. I want you to meet our newest pack member. He arrived last night.“ Dad says through the mindlink. What the hell? He just drops that information on me like it’s nothing. Guess it’s time to play dumb. “Why did he join our pack? Where’s he from?” I ask immediately. No need to beat around the bush if I’m going to get information this easily. “White Fang. Some pack drama had been going on. He needed to get out, and we can always use more doctors. He asked for a quiet entry. Kinda wants to fly under the radar from what I hear. They want to have a fresh start.” “They?” “Yeah. He’s got a daughter about your age. Pretty little thing. Seemed kinda shy. I’ll expect you and the boys to be on your best behavior. She could probably use a friend. Sounds like she ma
