Kaelith's name glowed on the wall like a brand.

I had known her my whole life as a legend. In the North they spoke of her the way other people spoke of weather, something old and certain that would outlast whoever was talking. I had thought I understood what she was. I had thought she was the fixed point in a world that kept moving.

Now she stood on the black grass with her dead spear hanging from her hand, and for the first time I saw what the legend had cost her.

"Say it," I said.

"Elena."

The laughter came down through the roots like rain.It was low at first, a thin, ragged thread of sound that I felt in my bones before I heard it. Then it grew. It rolled through the glowing forest and across the black water, and every silver vein in the walls flickered in time with it.It was my mother's laugh. Not the echo's. I knew the difference now. The echo had been a perfect copy, every note in its place. This was cracked and breathless and slightly out of tune, the laugh of a woman who had not used her voice in twenty-two years and had forgotten how.The Devourer flinched. It was the smallest movement. A tremor in the dark shape beneath the silver, a stutter in the borrowed smile. But I had spent a career watching monitors, and I knew a flinch when I saw one."That," the Devourer said, "should not be possible.""Why not?" Maya whispered. She was clutching my arm so tightly that my fingers had gone numb. Her silver eyes had cleared, but she was shaking, and her gaze kept dartin

Now. I am done being told the truth one door at a time."Her jaw worked. Behind her, the Frost-Guard wolves had gone utterly still on the crystal bridge, hundreds of white shapes with their ears flat, as though they had always known this moment was coming and had hoped to be elsewhere when it did."The First Queen was my mother," Kaelith said. The words fell into the Hollow like a stone into a well."I was her only daughter. I was nineteen when she knelt at the edge of a burning wo

I had spent twelve years learning one thing above all others. When two diagnoses fit the same symptoms, you do not choose the one you prefer. You find the test that separates them.My mother's echo stood on the shore with her hands pressed to her mouth. My sister's voice shook out of my daughter's lips. The black water pressed against my collarbone, and the binding dragged at my heart with a pull that grew heavier by the second. Two stories. One set of evidence. The echo knew the words my mother had said to me in the dark. But the echo was woven from the Hollow, and the Hollow had been reading the patterns under my skin since the moment we stepped through the door. She could have taken that memory from me.That was the problem. Every question I could think of was a question I already knew the answer to. And anything I knew, the Hollow could know.I needed a test with an answer I did not have."Grandmother," I said.Kaelith had not moved since her spear went dark. She stood on the blac

My daughter's mouth curved into a smile that did not belong to her.It was the worst thing I had ever seen.Maya's face was soft and round and eight years old, and her silver eyes were glassy with something that was not sleep. Sarah's smile lay across it like a stranger's hand laid over a child's."Get out of her," I said."Say please.""Sarah.""Say it nicely, little sister. You always were so polite when you needed something."The black water crept up my throat. I tasted metal. Beside me Leo was shaking so hard I could feel it through the bond, and Ace had gone limp against his brother's chest, his breathing shallow and wet. Ten paces away Killian fought the silver ring with a howl that cracked the roots overhead, and every time he surged against it, the light around his boots flared brighter.I took a breath.I let it out slowly. It was the breath I took before the first cut, the one that emptied my head of everything but the work."Please," I said."There." Sarah sounded delighted

Nobody moved. The black water lapped at my ribs. The pull on my heart dragged toward the sky. Above us the flagship's engines rumbled like an approaching storm. But in the Hollow, for one long moment, the whole world stopped to look at my grandmother.Kaelith stood on the black grass with her dead spear in her hand. She did not deny it.That was how I knew."Grandmother," I said. My voice sounded like it belonged to someone else. "Tell me she's lying.""She is not lying."The words came out of Kaelith like stones pulled from a wall.Killian made a low sound in his throat. The silver ring still held him ten paces from the shore, and his storm-blue eyes were fixed on the old woman with a hatred I had never seen him aim at anyone but the dead."Say it again," he said quietly. "Slowly.""I put my daughter in the snow."Kaelith spoke without looking at any of us. Her eyes were on the ground, on the frost creeping through the grass, and she seemed to be reading the answer there."Twenty-two

The ceiling of the Hollow did not break. It surrendered.Blue light poured through the fracture like water through a failing dam, and with it came a wind so cold it burned. Frost raced across the glowing forest, silvering every leaf and every root. It crept over the black water in delicate, spreading ferns of ice, and where it touched the surface the lake went quiet. Then the ice began to descend. It formed a staircase in midair, step after step of living crystal knitting itself together out of nothing, until a bridge of pale blue light stretched from the broken sky to the shore of the lake.My grandmother walked down it as though she were crossing her own front garden.Kaelith, Matriarch of the Frost-Guard, wore white fur over armor the color of a frozen river. Her silver hair streamed behind her without any wind to carry it. In one hand she held a spear of blue ice-fire, and behind her, spilling down the crystal bridge in a silent river, came the snow-white wolves we had watched fro

Five years is a lifetime in the world of the shifted. It is long enough for a forest to regrow, for a pack to forget a "useless" Delta, and for a broken heart to turn into a fortress of ice.I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my private office on the 80th floor of the Silver Rise Medical Ce

The scent of cedar and rain should have been my sanctuary. It was the scent of my home, the Blackwood Pack, and the scent of the man I had loved from a distance since I was a child. Instead, tonight, it was the smell of my execution.I stood in the center of the Pack Square, my feet bare against th

The infirmary of the Blackwood Pack had once been a place of healing, but now it smelled of stagnant water and old blood. The "Shadow Rot" had turned the sterile room into a tomb.I stood at the galvanized steel table, arranging my surgical tools. I had sent the triplets to the gardens with Marcus,

The hum of the private helicopter was a steady, rhythmic thrum that matched the beating of my heart. Below us, the jagged peaks of the Northern Range gave way to the deep, oppressive green of the Blackwood territory. From this height, the forest looked peaceful, but I knew the rot that lay beneath
