Linessa groaned at the knocks on the door, a furrow between her eyebrows as she squinted her eyes open. "What?!"

She hadn't gotten a good sleep in a while and yet there was someone outside disturbing her the one time she could.

And of course it was Zhamar.

"I'm leaving."

Linessa buried her head in the pillow. "And?"

"There's food on the stove."

"Not hungry."

"Eat it before it gets cold."

He said nothing after that, but she could hear his retreating steps.

Linessa frowned. Was that it?

Linessa sat at the table, opposite of Zhamar. He was eating her egg, and now that she really thought about it, why did he decide to?There was a tray of eggs in the fridge, he could've just fried another. Why eat a burnt egg?As she finished the toast she was munching on, she squinted at him, watching as he forced down the slightly rubbery edge of the egg with a straight face. "Why didn't you just throw that out and fry another?" She asked him, breaking the silence that had been dwelling between them.Zhamar chewed blankly, then swallowed with a shrug. "I'd prefer not to waste food, and I wanted to see what exactly made this scramble gourmet.""And what did you find, Mr. Food Critic?""I find that it's gourmet because it has absolutely no salt. It also has a slight bitterness that goes well with its not so soft texture. It really is a different kind of scramble...very gourmet."Linessa laughed, finally digging the fork into the middle of her heart-shaped egg to burst the yolk. "Can I

  • The Alpha's Scar   CHAPTER 24~ TRAGIC EGG

Linessa took up the remaining egg while Zhamar turned back on the stove, setting the heat low. "Go ahead."Linessa squared her shoulders, holding the spatula in one hand and the egg in the next."Break it on the rim," Zhamar said, stepping back to give her room.Linessa tapped the egg against the metal edge of the pan. She meant for it to be a light, confident tap, but the shell cracked open too quickly and almost half of the egg whites ended up on the stove and the rest in the pan along with the yolk. "Shoot...!" She muttered, her lips contorting into a frown when she noticed that instead of the perfect, contained circle Zhamar had made, hers was...well broken, the yellow bleeding into the white. To make matters worse, she hadn't waited for the pan to heat back up completely, so the egg just sat there in the oil, sizzling weakly like it was mocking her."You broke the yolk." Zhamar observed, his voice flat."I did it on purpose." Linessa lied smoothly, keeping her eyes glued to the

"You're safer here with me than you are on your own or with anybody else...and I don't care about your obsession with scars. I will not just sit back and watch you walk into something you might not be able to walk out of.""I don't need your permission. I do what I want.""And before now, I allowed you to. You wanted to leave with that Alpha you met at the meet and greet, I let you." He raised a brow. "But then what happened?"Linessa's shoulders slumped a little. "It doesn't matter what happened. I'm still alive, aren't I?""Because I went after you."Linessa looked away. "That doesn't matter either." She whispered, refusing to meet his eye."It does matter." His voice stayed calm, but there wasn't an ounce of hesitation in it. "You're alive because someone was there to save you."He stepped closer. "One day, I might not be."Linessa's nails dug into her palm, deeper than it did before. "I don't care..."And even if she did, she would never tell him."Well, I do." He stepped even clo

  • The Alpha's Scar   CHAPTER 22~ I WON'T LET YOU

Linessa barely slept last night. She'd spent the dark, agonizing hours staring at the ceiling and thinking carefully about her plans for the future. That must've been why she woke up with a grogginess in every step she made and a dull fog clouding everything she did. The cabin felt entirely too quiet. Unlike yesterday, nobody came to knock on her door in aid of waking her up.Zhamar didn't come back after he stormed out last night. However, he did leave Malek and Kael outside as guards to protect her from whatever he believed was looming in the shadows.Donavon Nelson...The name had a ring to it, turning over and over again in her mind. Linessa wasn't impressed by his approach, nor was she impressed by the arrogant contents of his letter. All that truly intrigued her was the glimmer of hope hidden behind his words. Two scars. She'd found four scarred alphas and none of them bore two marks. So this was different~ an entirely new phase.Moving with slow, heavy steps, Linessa walked in

Linessa unfolded the sheet of paper, glancing up at everyone with an uneasy expression on her face. Fear coiled in the pit of her stomach, but her need for answers overpowered it. She licked her lips, wetting them so they'd take longer to go dry while she read. Instead of skipping to the last paragraph like Zhamar requested, her eyes drifted to the very first line. She began reading from the top. The ink was sharp, flowing across the page in an elegant script that contrasted horribly with the grim reality of how it had arrived. "To the Alpha trying to claim a prize he never won... You possess many things Zhamar Dragun, but she's not one of them. She's not a trophy I'll allow you to hide behind your borders. She's a goddess among mortals; the only woman I'd allow to walk in my Shadow. In this life, she's not yours to claim, she's mine. My fate...my wild fire...my Linessa.' Zhamar didn't answer, he instead began reading again, the movement of his eyes along the words slower this time. His jaw hardened, the grip of his hand tightening around the edges of the paper enough to crush it. "This was...unexpected.""What is? Just tell us please."Zhamar shot Kael a warning glare, and then without even looking at Linessa, he commanded. "Go to your room, this discussion is one that should stay between me and my men."Linessa stood up abruptly, hands slamming against the dining table. "No...!" He was playing chess, and she knew exactly what his next move was. That letter had something to do with her, and he thought shutting her out was better than being clear about what's going on."If this is your way of protecting me, then I don't want your protection." She snapped, her voice steady. "Shielding me from the truth does not protect me from the danger."Zhamar looked at her, his eyes clearly telling her not to test him. "Do as told.""I won't, I'm not moving." She s

"Shall my trial begin?"He looked at her, his stare was cold, no empathy even though he was looking at his Luna. “Yes," he intoned, the word echoing across the now silent grounds. The frigid air bristled against Linessa’s skin, a throbbing pain in her heart and weakness in her legs as she walked up the aisle of people. Linessa sat in the cold, dirty dungeon, staring longingly at the staircase just above her cell. She'd been down here for three days, waiting for Kenneth; her fated mate, her alpha... Waiting for the man she loved to save her. Tomorrow was her trial, or rather her execution. You see, this was a
