It was the most time we’d gotten to spend together, just the two of us since we had come to the packhouse. I hadn’t realized how frustrating it had been to have us constantly going in opposite directions until today. And don’t get me wrong, I was grateful for the chance to get closer to Jack. He meant so much to Lucas and would always be a big part of his life. But it was nice to not have to worry about doing something inappropriate in front of him.
Even when Lucas took me out to lunch, we still seemed to be in our little bubble. I couldn’t remember a time I’d ever felt so happy and content. Knowing where we were going after our meal, I tried to hold onto that feeling as strongly as possible.
