ANMELDENELOWEN WHITLOCK POV
"You cannot go past this hall, Elowen," Lucan Blackmoor says. He stops right in front of my face and fixes his wet shirt. "I am here to fix the alpha girl's fever."
"You only care about her," I say. My voice is very quiet. I look at him. He is the best medicine wolf for Alpha Caelan, and he always treats me like an outsider from the Whitlock Moonfang Pack. "You call me Ms. Whitlock, but I am the Alpha's wife."
"It is just a name," Lucan says. He looks away fast.
"Go inside then," I say. I move my big body out of his way. I know how people see me. They only see a human who does not belong here.
I go down to the lower floor. I open the big dark wood box and find a thick black wolf skin vest. Caelan never wears it. I take it out and wait by the door.
Lucan comes down the stone stairs very fast. He carries his medicine bag and looks tired.
"You are still awake?" Lucan asks. He looks surprised to see me. "The moon is going down, Ms. Whitlock."
"Take this vest," I say. I push the warm fur into his hands. "The forest rain is freezing, and your sleep clothes are wet. You will get a sick body if you walk back to the pack house like that."
"I am a strong beta wolf," Lucan says. He looks down at the fur vest and blinks his eyes. "My wolf skin keeps me warm."
"Caelan never touches this vest anyway," I say. "You are the same big size as him. Just take it."
"Thank you," Lucan says.
I turn around and walk back to my room without saying another word. I only give him the fur because he helped my human grandmother with her heart sickness last year. I do not want to owe anything to Caelan's friends.
The next morning comes very fast. The big storm stops, and the air smells like wet dirt and pine trees. I get out of bed early because my stomach feels funny from the new baby. I walk down to the cooking fire, but I stop by the door.
"Put more fire wood under the pan, Caelan," Isolde Ashbourne laughs inside the kitchen.
"I am doing it," Caelan says.
I look inside. Caelan has a kitchen cloth tied around his big waist. He is cooking wild bird eggs over the hot fire. He looks very happy, and his mean face is totally gone.
Isolde stands very close to him. Her cheeks are pink from the fever night, and she looks very pretty and small.
"Eat this sweet berry," Isolde says. She puts a red fruit right into Caelan's mouth. "Make the eggs soft, not hard."
Caelan eats the berry and smiles down at her. His gold eyes look so soft. They look like two beautiful wolves who belong together.
"They look like a true alpha match, right?" a voice says right behind my ear.
"Good morning, Lucan," I say. I jump a little bit. I see he is wearing the black fur vest I gave him last night.
"The vest fits very good," Lucan says. He points to his chest.
"That is good," I say. I feel a squeeze in my heart because I bought that fur for Caelan, but Caelan never wanted it.
Isolde hears us talking and turns her head around.
"Elowen! Lucan!" Isolde calls out with a big smile. "Come inside the kitchen. Caelan made the morning food for everyone. Eat with us!"
"No, thank you," I say. I look at her sitting in my chair. "I have my own human bread and goat milk in the cold box. You need the hot food more because your wolf is weak today."
"Are you angry?" Isolde asks.
"This pack lodge has my family name on the stone door," I say. "I do not need to eat his food."
ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"Why are you standing there like a sick pup, human?" Celine Dawnfang laughs loud from the stone porch of the Thorncroft family home."I am just fine, Aunt Celine," I say.I pull my big jacket around my waist. The wagon ride from our lodge to the high pack lands took a full hour, and my head feels completely dizzy. My mind is filled with thoughts of Isolde Ashbourne’s bleeding stomach and the black look Caelan gave me before he ran. My chest squeezes tight, and I have to run over to the green bushes to gag. Nothing comes out, but my human stomach burns bad.Celine walks down the steps with her nose in the air. Her mate was Gareth Silvermane, the second son of old Alaric. The first son was Tristan Thorncroft, who died in a big rogue fight with his wife years ago, leaving Caelan to be the sole Alpha. Celine hates me because I am a plus-size human from the poor Whitlock Bloodline, and she wanted the Alpha throne for her own line."The old Alpha is dead, and his grand p
ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"You switch your face very fast, Isolde," I say. I grab my traveling bag and look right at her mean face. "Caelan is not here, so you stop acting like a small, sweet pup.""When are you going to sign the paper to leave the Thorncroft Alpha Dominion?" Isolde yells loud. She jumps right in front of the door so I cannot pass. "Tell me!""Are you happy being a bad wolf who steals another girl's mate?" I ask. I force a loud laugh from my throat."You are the bad one!" she screams, and her pretty white face turns completely red with anger. "If you did not use human tricks on old Alaric, I would be the Alpha's true mate in this lodge! Now the old wolf is dead. Nobody can save you anymore. If I were you, I would take the pack resources Caelan gives you and run far away from our territory!""You are not me, Isolde," I say. My voice stays cold. I walk right past her shoulder and head toward the stairs. Caelan is the only wolf who can make my heart hurt. Her words are just em
ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"Please do not be mad at me, Elowen," Isolde Ashbourne says. Her small face gets very sad, and she pulls on Caelan's thick shirt sleeve. "I made a big mistake by coming here last night. I ruined your night with Caelan. Please sit down and eat the alpha eggs with us so I can feel better.""I do not need your apologies," I say.I want to laugh out loud because it is so funny. Human girls like me have to work hard every single day, but a pretty wolf girl just has to cry once. She can do anything bad, and everyone still loves her.Caelan does not look at me at first, but when Isolde speaks, his gold eyes snap to my face."Sit down and eat," Caelan says. His voice is very hard, like an Alpha commanding a low pack member."Okay," I say. I nod my head and try to smile. My heart feels totally numb now. I can never say no to Caelan because I loved him the first time I saw his wolf form in the woods. It is too hard to stop loving him. This is the first time I ever eat food m

ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"I know you hate me, but stay," I say. I force my eyes to stay on his big wolf eyes. "I will sign the paper to leave the Thorncroft Alpha Dominion. I will give you the divorce, but you have to stay here tonight and walk next to me at Alpha Alaric's funeral tomorrow. When the pack ritual is done, I will sign.""You want to bargain with me?" Caelan asks. He drops his hand from my jaw and takes a step closer. His mouth touches my ear, and his breath is very hot. "Then please me right now, Elowen. Words do not mean anything to an Alpha.""I can do that," I say. I put my big human arms around his thick waist. I have to look way up because he is so tall and I am short. I know this is a bad way to make him stay, and it makes me feel very small and sad inside.I move my hands down his back to hold him tight, but his big hand claps down on my wrist."That is enough," Caelan says. His voice is very flat. He pulls away, grabs his gray night clothes from the bed, and puts them
ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"Why are you sitting in the dark like a ghost?" Caelan Thorncroft barks as he slams my bedroom door open. He drops his wet leather coat on the floor and does not look at me. "Get out of my way.""You are completely wet from the storm," I say. My heart beats fast against my ribs. I stand up from the bed, my big human arms shaking as I grab clean clothes from the wooden chest. "Take these.""Put them down and stay silent," he says. He walks straight into the washroom, and the hot water starts making a loud noise.I do not sleep because my mind is too full of the wolf baby. I walk to the edge of the room and look out the glass window. The dark clouds are heavy over the Alpha Dominion District, and a cold rain hits the glass. The washroom door opens with a bang. Caelan steps out with just a small fur wrap around his waist, and his big alpha muscles are shining with water drops."What are you staring at, human?" Caelan asks. His dark eyes look mean and angry when he see
