LOGINELOWEN WHITLOCK POV
"You cannot go past this hall, Elowen," Lucan Blackmoor says. He stops right in front of my face and fixes his wet shirt. "I am here to fix the alpha girl's fever."
"You only care about her," I say. My voice is very quiet. I look at him. He is the best medicine wolf for Alpha Caelan, and he always treats me like an outsider from the Whitlock Moonfang Pack. "You call me Ms. Whitlock, but I am the Alpha's wife."
"It is just a name," Lucan says. He looks away fast.
"Go inside then," I say. I move my big body out of his way. I know how people see me. They only see a human who does not belong here.
I go down to the lower floor. I open the big dark wood box and find a thick black wolf skin vest. Caelan never wears it. I take it out and wait by the door.
Lucan comes down the stone stairs very fast. He carries his medicine bag and looks tired.
"You are still awake?" Lucan asks. He looks surprised to see me. "The moon is going down, Ms. Whitlock."
"Take this vest," I say. I push the warm fur into his hands. "The forest rain is freezing, and your sleep clothes are wet. You will get a sick body if you walk back to the pack house like that."
"I am a strong beta wolf," Lucan says. He looks down at the fur vest and blinks his eyes. "My wolf skin keeps me warm."
"Caelan never touches this vest anyway," I say. "You are the same big size as him. Just take it."
"Thank you," Lucan says.
I turn around and walk back to my room without saying another word. I only give him the fur because he helped my human grandmother with her heart sickness last year. I do not want to owe anything to Caelan's friends.
The next morning comes very fast. The big storm stops, and the air smells like wet dirt and pine trees. I get out of bed early because my stomach feels funny from the new baby. I walk down to the cooking fire, but I stop by the door.
"Put more fire wood under the pan, Caelan," Isolde Ashbourne laughs inside the kitchen.
"I am doing it," Caelan says.
I look inside. Caelan has a kitchen cloth tied around his big waist. He is cooking wild bird eggs over the hot fire. He looks very happy, and his mean face is totally gone.
Isolde stands very close to him. Her cheeks are pink from the fever night, and she looks very pretty and small.
"Eat this sweet berry," Isolde says. She puts a red fruit right into Caelan's mouth. "Make the eggs soft, not hard."
Caelan eats the berry and smiles down at her. His gold eyes look so soft. They look like two beautiful wolves who belong together.
"They look like a true alpha match, right?" a voice says right behind my ear.
"Good morning, Lucan," I say. I jump a little bit. I see he is wearing the black fur vest I gave him last night.
"The vest fits very good," Lucan says. He points to his chest.
"That is good," I say. I feel a squeeze in my heart because I bought that fur for Caelan, but Caelan never wanted it.
Isolde hears us talking and turns her head around.
"Elowen! Lucan!" Isolde calls out with a big smile. "Come inside the kitchen. Caelan made the morning food for everyone. Eat with us!"
"No, thank you," I say. I look at her sitting in my chair. "I have my own human bread and goat milk in the cold box. You need the hot food more because your wolf is weak today."
"Are you angry?" Isolde asks.
"This pack lodge has my family name on the stone door," I say. "I do not need to eat his food."
“I am thankful you don’t mind playing stepfather to an Alpha’s pup, but as you’ve pointed out, I don’t take my pack bonds seriously,” I snap, my eyes flashing as I glare at Aldric Stormfang in the dim light of the Crowmoor courtyard. “So you’re far too refined a male for a human female like me!”I shouldn't waste another breath on him. The wolf is completely unhinged.I turn on my heel, stepping away from the granite bench in the shaded pavilion. My heavy, plus-size body aches with every step, the pregnancy weight dragging at my lower back as I march briskly along the stone edge of the lotus pond toward the main hall. The crunch of his heavy combat boots following close behind makes my skin crawl. When his broad, scarred hand suddenly clamps down on my shoulder, my human temper explodes. Without thinking, I spin around and slam both hands violently against his chest, shoving him back with everything I have.Because he wasn't expecting a human to strike an Alpha, his footing snaps. Wit
“Benjamin, may the Moon Mother shine Her blessings upon your bloodline always,” I say, lifting my wooden tea goblet to toast Bastian Crowmoor across the long, pelt-covered table.Because I carry Caelan’s heir as a human female, liquid fire is strictly forbidden for me tonight.Bastian’s silver wolf-eyes warm, a grin splitting his scarred, aging face. “Your human tongue speaks sweet blessings, Elowen! May the ancestors watch over us all! Drink!”The rest of the high-bloodline feast passes in a blur of clashing iron goblets, roasting meat, and heavy pack laughter. Beside me, Aldric Stormfang sits like a stone statue, his dark gaze fixed on his plate, ignoring the entire bloodline. When the meal ends, Bastian staggers slightly, drunk on heavy fermented ale. Selene Thorncroft gently takes her elderly mate's arm to lead him up the wide stone stairs to the upper sanctuary. Down in the hall, Caelan sets up the carved stone board, challenging Aldric to a game of tactical territory-war while w
In a fraction of a second, Caelan’s leg sweeps out like an iron bar. His heavy combat boot strikes the beast directly in the ribs with a brutal, bone-snapping crack. The massive hound flies ten feet across the stone courtyard, slamming hard into the concrete balustrade with a sickening thud before collapsing into a bloody, whimpering heap.My breath hitches, my hands flying over my heart as I stagger back against Caelan’s broad chest. His arm immediately wraps around my waist, his scent flaring violently with protective heat, his muscles rigid as steel. The heavy oak doors of the main estate slam open. Aldric Stormfang marches out onto the terrace, his dark wolf-gaze dropping to his bleeding war-beast before snapping up to Caelan with pure malice."Thorncroft!" Aldric growls, his claws extending from his fingertips. "You dare cripple my blood-bound beast on my own territory?""Keep your feral beasts on a leash, Stormfang," Caelan answers, his voice dangerously low, the raw pressure of
“Are you planning to bake yourself into heat-sickness and kill the pup inside you?” Caelan growls, his massive frame blocking the sunlight pouring into the private quarters.I don't even look at him. Sweat drips down the small of my back, soaking through my tunic as I lie on the edge of the carved wooden bench, staring at the stone wall. My human skin feels stretched tight, my bloated belly heavy with the Alpha heir he forced into me."Get up," he commands, his voice carrying that low, instinctual vibration of pack authority. He snatches a loose white linen gown from the iron chest and hurls it onto my lap. "Change into this. We’re leaving for the inner territory immediately."I pull the gown to my chest, my hands trembling slightly with exhaustion. "I'm not going anywhere with you.""Today is Bastian Crowmoor’s sun-cycle feast," Caelan says, his golden eyes flashing with sudden irritation. "Selene called from the royal compound. The Thorncroft bloodline is gathering, and she expects
He doesn't apologize. He just slides his broad hands over my swollen stomach, leaning his heavy chin on my shoulder. "You're mine, Elowen. Everything you make, everything you buy, belongs in my compound."The next afternoon, the heavy tension in the compound only grows worse. With Caius Redfern sending scout signals from the border and my father Garrick lurking around the Grand Alpha Tribunal, I can barely rest. My body feels heavy, the baby kicking relentlessly against my ribs as my human frame struggles to carry an Alpha’s pure bloodline.I am sitting in the lower reception hall trying to drink herbal tea when the heavy iron doors swing open.Rowan Ashbourne steps into the room. She doesn't carry weapons, but her stance is pure Ashbourne nobility—poised, dangerous, and dripping in dominance. Her silver-threaded cloak sweeps over the stone floor as she looks down at my heavy, seated form."Lady Elowen," Rowan says softly, a faint, sharp smile touching her lips. "You look tired. Carry
“Next time, just tell me whatever you desire,” Caelan says, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly rumble that vibrates straight down my spine. “As long as you want it, I’ll take it from the guild and give it to you.”I stare at his broad, tattooed chest, the heat radiating off his massive frame almost making my breath hitch. I want to roll my eyes, but my chest aches too much. He thinks buying out the capital’s treasury can fix the gaping hole where my human dignity used to be.Before I can tell him to take his high-bloodline dominance and shove it, heavy footsteps echo against the stone corridor. Osric enters the inner chamber with a trail of four beta guards behind him. Each guard carries a heavy velvet-lined iron box, smelling richly of polished silver, moon-gems, and gold.Osric stops three paces away and bows his head. "High Alpha Caelan, these are the newest high-bloodline adornments from the Territory Treasury Guild."Caelan doesn't even look at Osric. His golden eyes stay l
