ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"The magic paper shows you have a wolf baby growing inside you," Osric Fenwick says. He passes the white sheet across the heavy stone table."That is impossible," I say. My hands shake hard. I look down at my big belly. I am a plus-size human girl in a world of tall, lean wolves. "We only did it one single time.""The pack magic does not lie, Elowen," Osric says. He sighs and shakes his head. "You are pregnant with the Alpha's child.""What am I going to do now?" I ask. My voice sounds very small."You must tell Alpha Caelan Thorncroft," Osric says. "He is the father.""No, he wants to divorce me," I say. "He wants me gone from the Thorncroft Alpha Dominion. If I tell him, he will think I am a bad human. He will say I am using this baby to keep his power.""He has a right to know," Osric says."I cannot tell him," I say.I grab the paper and stuff it deep inside my bag. I walk out of the Silvermoon Grand Healing Temple. My heart goes fast. I am so scared.Outside t

ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"I know you hate me, but stay," I say. I force my eyes to stay on his big wolf eyes. "I will sign the paper to leave the Thorncroft Alpha Dominion. I will give you the divorce, but you have to stay here tonight and walk next to me at Alpha Alaric's funeral tomorrow. When the pack ritual is done, I will sign.""You want to bargain with me?" Caelan asks. He drops his hand from my jaw and takes a step closer. His mouth touches my ear, and his breath is very hot. "Then please me right now, Elowen. Words do not mean anything to an Alpha.""I can do that," I say. I put my big human arms around his thick waist. I have to look way up because he is so tall and I am short. I know this is a bad way to make him stay, and it makes me feel very small and sad inside.I move my hands down his back to hold him tight, but his big hand claps down on my wrist."That is enough," Caelan says. His voice is very flat. He pulls away, grabs his gray night clothes from the bed, and puts them

ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"Please do not be mad at me, Elowen," Isolde Ashbourne says. Her small face gets very sad, and she pulls on Caelan's thick shirt sleeve. "I made a big mistake by coming here last night. I ruined your night with Caelan. Please sit down and eat the alpha eggs with us so I can feel better.""I do not need your apologies," I say.I want to laugh out loud because it is so funny. Human girls like me have to work hard every single day, but a pretty wolf girl just has to cry once. She can do anything bad, and everyone still loves her.Caelan does not look at me at first, but when Isolde speaks, his gold eyes snap to my face."Sit down and eat," Caelan says. His voice is very hard, like an Alpha commanding a low pack member."Okay," I say. I nod my head and try to smile. My heart feels totally numb now. I can never say no to Caelan because I loved him the first time I saw his wolf form in the woods. It is too hard to stop loving him. This is the first time I ever eat food m

ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"Why are you standing there like a sick pup, human?" Celine Dawnfang laughs loud from the stone porch of the Thorncroft family home."I am just fine, Aunt Celine," I say.I pull my big jacket around my waist. The wagon ride from our lodge to the high pack lands took a full hour, and my head feels completely dizzy. My mind is filled with thoughts of Isolde Ashbourne’s bleeding stomach and the black look Caelan gave me before he ran. My chest squeezes tight, and I have to run over to the green bushes to gag. Nothing comes out, but my human stomach burns bad.Celine walks down the steps with her nose in the air. Her mate was Gareth Silvermane, the second son of old Alaric. The first son was Tristan Thorncroft, who died in a big rogue fight with his wife years ago, leaving Caelan to be the sole Alpha. Celine hates me because I am a plus-size human from the poor Whitlock Bloodline, and she wanted the Alpha throne for her own line."The old Alpha is dead, and his grand p

ELOWEN WHITLOCK POV"You can get out now, human, the Alpha wants me to watch the Ashbourne girl," a middle-aged pack nurse says, waving her hand at me when I walk back into the chamber."Fine, she is all yours," I say, nodding my heavy head.I leave the Silvermoon Grand Healing Temple fast and catch a wolf-cab back to our private den in the Royal Alpha Quarter. My big human body feels completely drained, and my chest is heavy from the secret pup growing inside my belly. I fall straight onto my furs and sleep until the moon climbs high."Wake up, Elowen," a deep, dark growl cuts through my sleep, making my human skin prickle with heat.I open my eyes and gasp. Caelan is sitting right on the edge of my mattress, his massive shoulders blocking the moonlight. The bedroom is packed with thick, suffocating smoke, and every window is locked tight. His huge, clawed fingers are holding a burning leaf stick, his gold eyes glowing like fire through the dark gray air."You are back from the pack
