AVELORA
Our school was built to unite the tribes, not to separate us.
Then why are we in ranks? Why am I part of the working population when I’m supposed to be a student like everyone else?
I was supposed to be equal, at least, equal in illusion?
Our hierarchy was so strict that even the cafeteria wasn’t exempted.
I balanced the fancy silver food tray that was exclusively prepared for Alpha Khyrix as I stepped into the restricted dining hall.
"I hope he falls on his butt at his coronation tonight." I muttered, staring down at the tray.
As expected, Natalia was wrapped around him like second skin. His beta, Zayn, lounged to his right with two other guys sitting next to him, I didn't bother to learn their names because they hadn't bother to learn mine.
Natalia planted her lips on his cheek, she then looked up at me as if making a point.
I almost gagged but set the tray on the dining table anyway, Khyrix didn’t even glance up, he was totally absorbed in his phone, his body relaxed and expression unreadable.
Without acknowledging me, his friends began picking the bread.
I just want to leave, it was too early in the morning to deal with overconfident and arrogant wolves.
Especially an Alpha who needed a personal food delivery but never takes a bite out of the food and never bothered to know the name of the person that has been serving him for two years.,
Natalia kept sucking on him like he was her favorite candy. I fixed my gaze on the floor trying to avoid as much eye contact as I could.
"Uh.. What are you still doing here?" Natalia skanky, high pitched voice complained.
I cringed.
Finally Khyrix looked up with that extremely detached look on his face, his eyes skimmed over me, then his gaze dropped back to his phone.
Natalia's interest had shifted to me.
"Do you think standing there will make him notice you?" My eyes snapped up to hers, disbelief clouding my already irritated feature, I totally and absolutely despised this.
I didn’t have a reaction, I shouldn't, she has been picking on me the moment I walked through the gate of Northshire high.
I was from a lower pack and out of place. She barely lets me breathe.
As if what she said was funny, they all started laughing, I almost rolled my eyes.
"Stop." Khyrix's attention finally shifted from the phone it was focused on, he looked at me again like he was just noticing that I was there, he lifted his hand and gestured me to leave.
Like an animal being controlled, I listened not daring to look back.
I heaved a breathe I hadn't realized I was holding.
For people like me, that are at the bottom of the food chain, both in school and in our community, that was the closest I could ever get to the alpha and that was the most word he was ever going to say to me.
I checked the time as I left the hall, I couldn’t make it to practice even if I tried, I had spent too much time in there.
All I had left to do was prepare for Alpha Khyrix coronation ball which was tonight, every werewolf pack will be there.
They were all waiting for him to find a mate.
I was supposed to buy a dress yesterday, but kitchen duty had me trapped.
The only dress I had was the one I brought from my village, the precious knee length dress my mum had emptied her savings to buy.
I had to serve at the coronation, that was the only way I could make it into the venue without been thrown out.
..........................
By evening, the whole school was already buzzing with energy.
I ran to my spot in the kitchen, carrying one of the tray of snacks that was made earlier.
I took a deep breath and prayed today goes without any mistakes for anyone to remember me by.
Even though I hated being invisible, I also liked it, if that made any sense.
The first person to spot me coming was Natalia.
Figures, the moon goddess had never been kind to me, always playing one joke after the other.
"I knew I smelt something." Natalia and her crew of three minion covered their noses, "who allowed trash in here?" I stood still almost as if, if I didn't breathe, she would go away.
No she didn't, instead, she collected a drink from one of her minion and emptied it on my dress.
I shut my eyes and bit my lips in frustration.
I almost screamed, but I kept my control, forcing my self not to cry in these situation,
She wanted that but I wasn’t going to give her that satisfaction.
At the same time, a deep sound cut through the hall
"mate." the Alpha finally said the word the elders have been itching for him to.
Everything stopped.
All our attention turned to him, every eyes trailed after him as he searched for his mate in the crowd.
I didn’t care who she was, I just don’t want it to be Natalia. From the back of the hall, I watched in horror as he moved through the crowd, closer and closer.
It was Natalia the whole time, wasn’t it?
She finally got what she wanted, the school is going to be one living hell for me, now that she was Kyrix's mate.
"mate." he growled again but instead of going to Natalia, he passed her.
Then he leaned closer, he inhaled.
The room seemed to tilt.
"Mate." he said, quieter now.
At me.
What?
AVELORAMy cheek burned where his hand had struck me. The sting pulsed, the humiliation was overwhelming as I looked around to see eyes everywhereThe guards, pack members, students are frozen in place, watching this horror movie unfold, they were watching me.I’d known I was no longer invisible the moment I became Alpha Khyrix’s mate. But this—this was different. This was my father stripping me bare in public, reminding everyone exactly where I came from.“You cursed thing,” my father snarled, lifting his hand again.I flinched, instinct taking over. I braced myself for the secondblowOnly it never came.I looked up, Khyrix stood between us, his hand was locked around my father’s wrist, grip unyielding. He didn't return the same agression that my father carried around, everything about him was controlled, barely anything noticeable. My heart slammed violently against my chest. “Don’t touch my mate.” everytime I heard the word mate, something in me flipped. My father’s nostrils flare
AVELORA The door flew open.It wasn’t pulled or pushed by anyone. It burst wide, as if the wind itself had forced its way in, yet the hallway beyond was empty. And still, the room shifted.Something moved through the air, through me. It slid beneath my skin, crept into my bones like a whispered warning.Pressure bloomed behind my eyes. All too familiar and terrifying. “That’s my mother,” Khyrix said, spinning me so I faced him.'Finally'.The word brushed against my mind, uninvited. Mybreath caught. “Avelora.”Khyrix’s voice reached me, distant, as though it had to fight its way through something thick and unseen. But it tangled with another voice, one I knew far too well. “Avelora.” a voice so soft and certain. The same one from my dreams.“Hey,” Khyrix murmured, grounding me. “We need to sell this.” I nodded, clinging to that thought as energy surgedthrough me, wild and uncontained.“Okay,” I breathed. That was the last thing I managed before his lips met mine. The contact snapped
AVELORAEven though I knew what I was getting into, my body still trembled. His hand squeezed mine, almost reassuringly. It did nothing but fray my nerves further. The music stopped again. This time, instead of keeping quiet like they did before, people had already gathered.I looked around at the judgmental faces, their attention on our hands as we walked through the crowd that parted like seawater.Khyrix made his way toward the podium while I followed with my head down. When we reached it, the elders who were supposed to arrive during the crowning were already there. My thoughts stumbled as I took in their respective faces.I didn’t need a fortune teller to know what they were going to say, and even though I had prepared myself for this, the elders’ first words broke all confidence.“No, not her,” one of them said, finality heavy in his tone.Weren’t we supposed to be somewhere private to hold this conversation? I knew I had to face this humiliation, I just didn’t know it was going
AVELORA “What do you mean?”The words barely left my mouth before my entire existence collapsed under its weight.“You’re not my mate,” he repeated, like that explained everything. I shut my eyes in frustration as I ran my hand through my already disheveled hair."you know what...?" I exhaled sharply I'm not even going to ask. " I moved to walk past him but was pulled back. His hand closed around my wrist. “I’m sorry,” he said, firm. “But you are the best option.”A broken laugh fell from my lips."Oh, because I'm convenient?" I made an air quote, tears burning behind my eyes "Wow, I'm flattered""No." he said "Because you are the best option."That stopped me. "what?" I stared at him, waiting for him to explain, Waiting for the reason he thought justified ruining my life in one night.I swear, if this was some elaborate prank, I was absolutely poisoning his tea and spitting in his favorite food."Because even though you go here, this is the first time I've seen you."Wow. “I’ve been
AVELORANo, I definitely wasn't hallucinating. Was he mistaken? there was no way I was his mate.Maybe he was drunk.I looked around searching for some sort of sanity but everybody wore the same expression I did. Faces that sent a clear message that I wasn't worthy enough to be a mate to someone like him.I became horrifyingly aware of everything that was going on. The sticky feeling of the drink clinging to my skin, the extremely prejudiced look people were giving me.Alpha Khyrix was close, too close to me for comfort.I could see the faint line in between his brows, the way his jaw tightened as he inhaled again. His gaze were fixed on me like he was trying to solve a problem he never asked for."No."Natalia was the first to break the silence with a mocking laugh "That's not funny."She shoved me out of the way and got in front of me, she placed her hand on Khyrix's chest stopping him in his track. His gaze finally broke away from me.Fury flashed behind his eyes"move." One word t
