The Beta’s wife fainted. The mate bond broke her. She can’t even stand to look at what’s left of him.
Gwen knelt on the ground with her mother’s head in her lap and tried very hard not to fall apart herself.
The pack doctor arrived within minutes....a thin, severe-looking woman named Dr. Hallow. She knelt beside Beatrice, checked her pulse, her eyes, her breathing.
"Mate bond shock," she said shortly. "Combined with emotional trauma. She needs to be taken to the pack hospital immediately."
Two warriors moved forward without being asked, lifting Beatrice’s limp body with practiced efficiency.
"Wait..." Gwen started to stand. "I’m coming with her..."
"No." Duncan’s hand landed on her shoulder. "You’re staying here."
She looked at him. "That’s my mother....."
"And there are things we need to discuss." His voice was hard now. All traces of sympathy gone. "Things that can’t wait."
The warriors were already carrying Beatrice toward the medical building on the far side of the square. Gwen watched them go, her mother’s body limp and lifeless in their arms.
"She’ll be taken care of," Duncan said. "The pack doctors will do everything they can."
Gwen turned back to him slowly.
There was something in his voice. Something that made her stomach drop.
"What things," she said quietly.
Duncan looked at her for a long moment. Then he looked at the crowd still gathered around them, watching, listening to every word.
"The pack council met this morning," he said. Loud enough for everyone to hear. Official. "We’ve made a decision regarding your family’s status."
Gwen went very still.
"Your father has been branded a traitor," Duncan continued, his voice flat and emotionless. "Evidence has been presented to the council showing that Arthur leaked the meeting location to the hunters. That he betrayed not only our pack, but also our allies. That his actions directly led to the death of the Fenwick Alpha and everyone else at that meeting site."
"That’s a lie," Gwen said. Her voice came out barely above a whisper. "My father would never...."
"The Fenwicks have provided proof," Duncan said over her. "Documents. Communication records. Testimony from their scouts." He paused. "The evidence is conclusive."
"It’s fabricated...."
"It doesn’t matter if it’s fabricated!" Duncan’s control cracked for just a second, frustration bleeding through. "Don’t you understand? The Fenwick triplets believe your father betrayed them. They believe Arthur got their father killed. And they want blood for it."
The crowd was completely silent now. Everyone watching. Everyone listening.
Gwen felt their eyes on her like physical weight.
"The council’s decision is final," Duncan said. "Effective immediately, you and your mother are stripped of your Beta family status. You are no longer recognized as Arthur’s daughter in any official capacity." He paused. "You are demoted to omega."
The word landed like a physical blow.
Omega.
The lowest rank in the pack. The ones nobody wanted. The ones who did the jobs nobody else would do.
"You have until the end of the week to vacate the Beta residence," Duncan continued. "You may take only personal belongings. All family property, all Beta privileges, all status protections are revoked immediately."
Gwen stared at him.
This man who had eaten at their table. Who had held her when she was a baby. Who had told her father he was the finest Beta Greywatch had ever had.
"My mother," she said quietly. "She’s in the hospital. She needs...."
"Your mother will receive basic medical care," Duncan said. "As long as the pack deems it necessary. But her treatment costs will be recorded as debt. When she wakes, she can work it off. If she doesn’t wake...." He left the sentence unfinished.
If she doesn’t wake, they’ll let her die.
Gwen understood perfectly.
"This is wrong," she said. Her voice was shaking now, the control she’d been holding onto starting to fracture. "Everything about this is wrong. My father didn’t betray anyone. He died serving this pack. He died protecting....."
"Your father died a traitor," Duncan said coldly. "And you would do well to remember that when you speak about him in public. The Fenwicks are watching, girl. They’re waiting to see how we handle this situation. If they think we’re defending a traitor, if they think we’re protecting his family...." His jaw tightened. "We can’t afford to make them think that. Do you understand?"
She understood.
She understood that her father was being sacrificed to save the pack’s skin. That his name was being dragged through the mud to appease three Alphas who wanted revenge. That everything he’d built, everything he’d worked for, everything he’d died for was being erased to protect people too afraid to stand up for the truth.
"Is that all, Alpha," she said quietly.
Duncan looked at her for a long moment. Something almost like regret flickered across his face.
"That’s all," he said.
She turned and walked away.
Past the body bags containing what was left of her father. Past the crowd of people who wouldn’t meet her eyes anymore. Past the guards and the whispers and the life she’d had just hours ago.
Behind her, she heard someone say, loud enough to carry: "Traitor’s daughter."
She didn’t look back.
She just kept walking.
And tried very hard not to think about the fact that she’d lost both her parents in the space of a single afternoon.
Her father was dead and being called a traitor.
Her mother was unconscious and might never wake up.
And she had just been stripped of everything that had ever made her safe.
She had nothing left.
Absolutely nothing.
"I don’t know," Killian said. And it was the first time Cassian had ever heard his eldest brother admit something like that. "I don’t know. But I do know that we can’t sustain this. We’re falling apart. All three of us. And if we’re falling apart, we’re going to make mistakes. We’re going to break the rules we set. We’re going to hurt her more."Cassian felt the truth of that land in his chest."So what do we do?" he asked again."I don’t know," Killian repeated. "But we’re going to have to figure it out. Because this...." He gestured vaguely, encompassing the situation, the torture, the impossible bind they were all caught in, "....this isn’t sustainable."Cassian nodded slowly. He understood. He understood that they were trapped. That his wolf had decided Gwen was essential. That no amount of fighting, fucking, or training was going to change that. And he understood, with a clarity that was almost painful, that the next ten days were going to be the most difficult of his entire life
One of the younger warriors stepped forward. His name was Derek. He was maybe twenty-five, built like a tank, and he’d spent the last year establishing himself as one of the pack’s most promising fighters. He’d beaten most of the seasoned warriors at least once. He approached the mat with confidence, rolling his shoulders, preparing himself. The moment Cassian moved toward him, the confidence evaporated. They fought for maybe five minutes. It was a massacre. Cassian was faster, stronger, more experienced, and completely uninterested in anything except the physical release of combat. He moved Derek around the mat like a dance partner, every strike landing with precision, every combination flowing into the next one seamlessly.By the time Derek hit the mat and didn’t get back up, the other warriors had stopped watching from the sidelines. They’d retreated to a safer distance, their body language screaming discomfort.Cassian stood in the center of the empty mat, breathing hard, his knuc
It wouldn’t be.But he was going to try anyway.Because the alternative....accepting that only Gwen could satisfy what his wolf needed, was something Barrett’s rational mind absolutely refused to contemplate. His hand gripped his cock and began to stroke. The pleasure was already building again, the sensitivity from the previous orgasm making every movement intense and almost painful. His breathing was becoming ragged. His body was already chasing another release that would ultimately prove as unsatisfying as the last one.But he stroked anyway.Because what else was there to do?He had to find some way to manage the constant ache. Some way to function while his entire body screamed for something he couldn’t have. Some way to survive the knowledge that the female who would satisfy him completely was currently recovering from injuries he’d helped inflict.Barrett’s movements became faster, more desperate. His other hand gripped the sheets, twisting them in his fist. His back arched sli
He drove back into her with force that made her cry out, pinning her wrists above her head, fucking her from above with an intensity that bordered on violent. Her legs wrapped around his waist, her pussy desperately clenching around his cock, trying to milk him toward orgasm. He was close. The pressure was building at the base of his spine, the familiar tightening that preceded release. His body was responding, even if his wolf wasn’t. His body knew how to do this. His body had been trained for years to fuck and claim and dominate.Even if his body was doing it all for the wrong reasons."Please," the she-wolf breathed. She was looking up at him with eyes that held actual emotion, actual connection. Like she thought this meant something. Like she thought he was here with her in any way except physically. "Please, Alpha, I can feel you close, please...."Barrett came.Hard. Intense. The pressure releasing in waves as his cock buried itself deep inside her and released. His balls emptie
The word came out like a curse, like an expression of frustration more than arousal. Because this wasn’t what he wanted. Stroking himself off in his office like some teenage boy who couldn’t control his own body wasn’t what he wanted. What he wanted was her. What he wanted was to bury himself inside her until he forgets why they’d agreed to maintain distance. What he wanted was to mark her and bind her and make it so she could never question their ownership again. But he couldn’t do that. Not while she was healing. Not while her mind was still fragile and her body was still recovering from what they’d done.So instead, he stroked himself like a man possessed, chasing a release that would be momentary and unsatisfying and wouldn’t solve anything. He was close now. His cock was pulsing in his hand. His entire body was coiled tight. His release was coming.....The pressure built to a breaking point and then....Killian came.Hard. Intense. Weeks of frustration pouring out of him in thick
Killian was in his office when Agnes knocked on his door at midday. The office was austere in a way that reflected its owner....dark wood paneling, leather furniture, a massive desk organized with military precision. The only personal touch was a landscape painting on one wall, a scene of mountains and a distant fortress that suggested someone who appreciated power and sovereignty."Enter," Killian commanded.Agnes stepped inside and closed the door quietly behind her. She moved with the respect of someone who understood hierarchy and deference."Report," Killian said without preamble."She woke this morning," Agnes began. She stood with her hands folded in front of her, her posture impeccable. "Naturally. Without disturbance. She was coherent and aware. More present than in the previous days."Killian leaned back in his chair and listened."She ate a full breakfast," Agnes continued. "Her appetite has returned. The dissociation is fading noticeably. Her body is healing well....the br
