“Where are we going?”
Gemma asked as the motorcade continued, sprinting over of the outer ring road east of Ayria city, instead of heading for the headquarters of the Archturian branch west of Ayria.
Judging from the direction, they were now heading towards the place where a city was built for Archturians and Elenio’s elites, Meubena. Located 45 minutes from the capital, Meubena is inhabited by Archturian troops and high-ranking state officials, including the residence of the country’s leader.
“Are we going to the main base?”
Gemma was quite surprised, if that was the case. Was the matter so important that they took her to headquarters? Could it be that those two people were Archturians?
Gemma shook her head quickly, trying to shake off the last thought. There was no way people with such pitiful fighting abilities were Archturians.
“We were going to pick you up earlier. It had nothing to do with the fuss you made.”
Jo explained. His face was not as irritated as before, but his tone was cold. “But you still have to take responsibility for your actions. We’ll take care of that later.”
“You sound exactly like a boring curmudgeon,” Gemma sneered.
“Thank you,” replied Jo. Gemma couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
“But—wait. Wow... Picking me up? Did I suddenly become an important person among you guys?”
Gemma’s sarcasm got no response from Jo. Yes, the heartless joke just now is simply not something to respond to. She even felt the pain in her heart again when she heard her own babbling. Gemma looked out the window to relieve the tightness that was squeezing her chest.
Gemma had set foot in Meubena several years ago when she took part in the Archturian entrance selection which was held for three days. That is the last stage before they decided on who to accept. Gemma has passed the administrative selection, health, written test regarding general knowledge, country defenses’ knowledge, and everything about Archturian.
Through an announcement letter sent to her home, Gemma learned that she had a near-perfect score in all areas. Even the results of the physical tests and her armed and martial skills were the third highest in the history of the Archturian admissions selection.
But all those great results were broken by one thing, which Gemma still couldn’t accept until now.
Gemma could hear the waves crashing as the car drove by the beach. She sighed in admiration. Gemma rarely went to the beach, so she didn’t want to waste the opportunity to see the turbulent expanse of blue water, a stage of nature that showed how strong they were compared to all humans on earth.
In her hometown, Fiend, there was also a small beach. But considering Fiend is one of the poorest areas in Elenio, the beach there is also not as beautiful and clean as the beach in Meubena.
It stunned Gemma for a moment until something caught her attention. A nine-meter-tall statue of an Archturian warrior, grayish-black, stands proudly on each side of the road. Gemma’s feelings when she saw the statues were still the same as when she saw them for the first time a few years ago. There was horror in the cold eyes and haughty face of the great Archturian statue. It was as if they could read every human thought that crossed here.
The two statues are a sign that Gemma has arrived in Meubena. To further confirm that this city is the city of the Archturians, the next thing that can be seen upon entering the city is the main Archturian headquarters.
The symbol is shaped like the letter J with a more sloping angle, as if almost falling backward, has a branch in a long diagonal line, with a dot in the shape of fire above the symbol. The symbol was called The Arc, blazing majestically in a fiery-red color. At first glance it looked as if it was on fire, on the Archturian main building that soared high as if to embrace the sky with arrogance.
The Archturian Headquarters itself comprises two large buildings as the main headquarters. The towering one is made of glass, shining with the afternoon sun. The other building was a pale gray, lower but about three hundred meters long.
Gemma kept staring at it until she realized the car wasn’t going there.
“Where are we going?” Gemma asked Jo. Jo turned and smiled. Not a pleasant smile.
“You always ask what division I’m in, don’t you?”
“Erm... Yes ... and why is that have something to do with this?”
“Now we will head there.”
Gemma didn’t want to ask any further, because Jo seemed reluctant to answer her question again.
There must be something important that Archturian wanted her to come to one of their top-secret divisions.
Gemma looked back at the street. At first glance, there is nothing different from Meubena. This city has facilities like the city in general. Street lamps with iron poles planted on the sidewalk in neat rows, interspersed with lush trees that are sure to provide shade on a hot day.
Gemma could see how luxurious this city was from the signboards and shop displays that lined the streets. Everything looks expensive. It was the kind of place that Gemma wouldn’t enter.
There are small gardens, sports areas, and, not to mention, houses that are twice the size of the average house in Ayria. From the fences of the houses, it is clear that the occupants are not ordinary people.
Gemma was quite surprised when the car they were traveling in swerved and crossed a four-meter-high gate. A long hallway full of orange light greeted them. Soon the car stopped.
“We’ve arrived?” Gemma looked around questioningly. The dim lighting of the orange lights reminded Gemma of the street lamp she had seen earlier.
“Not yet,” Jo answered, paused for a moment, and then continued. “We’ll change cars.”
“What?” Gemma couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“Just standard protocol. Just follow it.”
Jo took out a black cloth. He looked at Gemma with an apologetic look.
“You want to cover my head with that?” Gemma raised an eyebrow. She cannot believe it.
“You can’t refuse.” Jo smiled again, and as before, it wasn’t a smile that appeared in a propitious moment.
“We’re friends, Jo.”
Joe shook his head quickly. “No, Gemma... We’re family.”
Then, before Gemma could reply, Jo quickly wrapped the cloth around Gemma’s head. Gemma hadn’t finished counting to three, and consciousness had left her body.

“Sorry for any inconvenience during the trip. Just standard protocol when we have to bring a stranger to base.”Those words greeted Gemma as she opened her eyes. From her unobstructed breath, she could tell that the veil on her face had been removed. But why does everything seem so blurry... And dark? There was only one spot that was so bright, it had been shining on her even when she was still half-dreaming.At first, Gemma thought it was a lamp used during interrogations. But it wasn’t. The light came from the moon, perfectly round white, hanging over the vast bluish-black sky. The moonlight was the only light here and made Gemma’s interlocutor, who was sitting opposite her, appear as a perfect silhouette. One thing was clear, he who was sitting there was a middle-aged man. Looks like her father’s age.“I won’t introduce myself, but I will tell you where we are right now.”Gemma didn’t have to
Gemma put one hand on the table and the other on her chin. “You think I care for what happens to my life?” Gemma knew that the mysterious man had not expected her to answer this.“The last thing that is certain to happen to all humans is death. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”Even though she couldn’t see him, Gemma could feel that man in front of her at a loss for words. But it wasn’t long, because he opened his mouth again. Although now his voice sounded a little hoarse.“You may not care about your life, but do the people closest to you think the same?”Gemma looked at the man with an increasingly lazy look. “People closest to me? You mean, if I don’t do what you want, you will mess with people close to me?”No answer. So it is a yes. This is getting ridiculous.“Sir, if you think you can threaten me in such a cheap way you are absolutely wrong. I am no
The pounding on the door made Gemma groan without realizing it. Her head was about to burst, and her eyes were heavy. It took Gemma a moment to gather strength, feeling every muscle movement from her body. There was another pounding on the door, this time followed by a voice. “Gemma, are you in there?”Purity? No, it’s not her voice. It was a male voice.Gemma opened her eyes. The sun’s rays dimly shone through the transparent curtains that covered her bedroom window. What’s the time now?“Gemma.” The voice called again. It took Gemma a moment to realize it was Jo’s voice.Gemma forced herself to get up. With shaky footsteps, she opened the door. Her memory was still hazy after last night she drank too much. There wasn’t a fight where she sang last night, so Gemma had plenty of free time until morning. The only options she had were stomping on the dance floor or drinking at the bar
“You know, I hate every time I go out with you in public.”“I know. You always say that when we go out together.”Gemma and Jo were eating at the most popular fast-food restaurant in Ayria, which was about four hundred meters south of the library where Gemma lived. Just a fifteen-minute walk. The weather is sunny today, giving a pleasant atmosphere to spend with lunch on the seats arranged on the side of the road. Many seemed to have the same thought as Gemma and Jo, as the surrounding chairs were almost full. Two girls, apparently still in college, whispered as they passed where Jo and Gemma were sitting. They’re not the first girls to intentionally do silly things to get attention.Whose attention?Who else but Jo.“You’re just jealous, that’s all. No man acts like that when he sees you.”“If there’s one, that would be creepy.”Gemma picked up a pi
“Hatchi!”This was the fourth time Jonah had sneezed in less than half an hour, disturbing his concentration.“Not feeling well, Jonah?” His chess opponent, Michael, asked with a chuckle. It wasn’t just a simple question, but more of a mockery. “I get it if you can’t beat me. You can use health reasons.”Jonah looked at the person in front of him. His neighbor, who lived downstairs, always irritated Jonah with his chatter. However, Jonah had lived side by side for eighteen years to make him understand it was Michael’s way of joking. Although not every time Jonah can accept Michael’s jokes.“I’m fine. Maybe someone is talking about me so I’m sneezing.”Jonah moved the position of his chess piece. Now he has a pawn ready to put Michael at checkmate.“Speaking of you? Who?” Michael paused for a moment, “Hm… looks like no one else is goin
Maya’s car stopped in front of the library. A shiny lemon-yellow city car. Before this, Gemma had never asked where Maya could get a car, considering that her job as a manager could not provide her with the luxury of a car. But now Gemma was suspecting that maybe the rebels were funding Maya. That is, if Maya is a rebel. Gemma didn’t know for sure because so far all she had were assumptions.Gemma took the guitar in one hand and walked to the car. She put her guitar in the back passenger seat, then she sat in the passenger seat next to the driver.Maya stomped on the gas pedal, bringing them forward through the evening atmosphere in the city of Ayria, which was slowly getting quieter. The people who were still on the sidewalk walked in a hurry while bowing their heads. If they had experienced happiness all day before, that feeling was now invisible on their faces. There was only anxiety because it was late this afternoon, but they were still n
The Draconian slashed its hand at someone within its reach, and in the blink of an eye, the person was lying on the floor. His skin became very wrinkled and there was no longer flesh in his body. There is only a black hole where the eyes should be. Three slashes ran across the man’s chest, where the Draconian had lodged its sharp fingers. There was no blood flowing there, only a black deep wound that looked as empty as a deep fissure. Black liquid poured out of the human’s mouth, along with thick smoke. The guards fired at the creatures in desperation. Stupid. Of course, it was pointless. They cannot harm Draconians with ordinary weapons. The brief silence turned to panic and horror. Everyone was running aimlessly to save their lives.Draconians didn’t stay still. They moved and walked like convulsive people, but at incredible speed. They all spread out and didn’t give their prey a chance to escape. The Draconian ran and crept up the wall
“Is it hurt?” Nero looked up to look at Gemma as he asked. Gemma shook her head slowly. “Tell me if it hurts, I’ll be more careful.” Nero continued to bandage Gemma’s palms. Gemma didn’t say what happened to her, because no one would believe it. Nero hadn’t asked about that either. For some reason, Gemma felt calm. If she was with Jo now, Jo would have been asking all sorts of questions and putting on an overly worried face like Gemma’s father. They couldn’t go out before dawn, and Gemma thought Nero would just keep her in one corner of the King’s Door until they could get out from there. But it turned out Nero had other ideas. He grabbed the first aid kit that was in the nightclub and led Gemma to the emergency staircase that led up. King’s Door is located in the basement of a building used as a shopping center. Nero kept taking Gemma up and up until they reached the fifteenth floor. Nero opened the door leading to the inside of the b
