Chapter 5

When Eren spoke, Rory remained mute. So many questions began to fly through her thoughts. Why is it that she, of all people, had to be the one? Her gaze remained fixed on Eren, and she had a frown on her face.

"You could get blind if you gaze at me for too long." Rory immediately bowed her head, as though she couldn't believe he could feel her gaze on him. Eren went away, smirking.

Rory shifted her gaze to Eren as he entered a room. She exhaled, relieved that he was no longer present and that she could finally breathe again. She looked up at the elderly man who had been interviewing her earlier. "What does he mean when he says I work for him now?" He was questioned by her.

"You are quite fortunate, ma'am." He said. He placed his hands behind his back and cast a glance across the room where Eren had just entered. Rory waited for the elderly man to start talking again, her eyes filled with questions. "You have been picked by the young master to remain at his side."

"But why?" Rory asked, and the man fixed his gaze on her. She had no desire for any of it. She had no desire for any of it at all. She only wanted to increase her earnings rather than remain in close proximity to Eren Cyrus. What is it that life is up to this time? She lost her grandmother the first time, then her father and their home, and now? Have to end up becoming the rudest man's personal maid? She instantly shook her head. She brushed the thoughts out of her head. She raised her eyes to the elder man once more. "He can't see me. Can he?" The man shook his head when she asked. "Then how did I get lucky to be chosen?"

"It appears that he trusts you."

"That doesn't add up." Rory remarked. Her brows were furrowed, and it was clear that she was angry. "It was because of my name that he chose me." She immediately fell on her knees. "Please assign me to any position other than alongside him. Sir, I beg you. All I want to do is make enough money to feed my family. Please." He gently helped her in a rise.

"The young master isn't quite as awful as he appeared to be. He's merely hiding his feelings because he never wants to trust anyone again." He turned away from Rory and started walking. "Join me." Rory followed behind him as she obeyed. "Please take your seat," he said as he sat across from Rory. "When he was a small child, something happened to him. I looked after him after his parents died. His personal maid was on the point of poisoning him, but luckily I discovered it." Rory had been puzzled as to why he was telling her so much. He couldn't possibly have trust in her as well. She'd do anything for money, even if it meant causing harm to Eren Cyrus. She'd go ahead and do it.

"How can you put your faith in me?" She asked. "Neither you nor Mr. Eren have any idea who I am or how I grew up."

He agreed with what she was saying with a nod. "I don't know who you are, Miss Spears, but I know you're a nice person who will go to any length to stay alive. So hear me out." He got back to work on his computer and printed a document. Rory received it from him. She first looked at him before turning her attention to the paper in her hand. "If you choose to stay with the young master, I will pay 10 times more." He knew she'd accept whatever he offered because she appeared to be a naive young woman who would do anything to keep her family out of poverty. He had gotten some information about her family and her father dying while trying to keep the minister safe and how the minister never paid them a visit or kept to his promise after her father died.

Rory exclaimed, and she gave him a quick glance after reading the page. "No way. Twenty-five thousand dollars?" she asked. – "Are you really going to pay this amount per month if I work for him?" He nodded in response to her question. She could use this money to help her family move out of Section C and receive an education as well. She'd finally be able to pursue her doctorate and establish herself as a professional.

"So, what are your thoughts? Will you be able to follow his instructions and put up with anything he says? If you are willing to undertake all of that, you may sign beside the paper's signature." He handed her a pen, which she accepted without hesitation. The funds were more than plenty.

After she signed the form, Rory returned it to him. "Can you tell me when I'll be able to begin working?" She asked.

"I'll see you in the morning. You will be granted a room in the mansion, so now you can return home and rest, as well as bring any essential items you will be needing in the house." He raised his eyes to a woman who stood close to a wall, her head bowed."You can see her to get your uniform measured. It'll be finished by tomorrow." Rory got up and walked away from her seat. She took a bow and began to walk away when he called her back. "After today, you are only allowed to return home after three months, and no family members are allowed to pay you a visit. Your contract will be canceled if all of these rules are broken. Also, tomorrow you will be given a book containing information about the young master as well as the time you must get him out of bed and to the breakfast table." He pushed himself up to his feet. "Are we on the same page, Miss Spears?" He asked.

"Yes, sir," Rory stepped away from to take her measurements. When she sees Caroline, she has a lot to say to her. She also wanted to know if Caroline had gotten the job or if she had been sent away.

Rory left the mansion after her measurements to find her friend. Anne approached her yet again, and this time she defended herself. She'd gotten the job, and the young master had picked her, so even if she argued, Anne would be the one to go, not her. "Not this time, Anne," Rory said.

"I see you're able to communicate now." She cast a glance over Rory's shoulder. She appeared to be looking for someone or something. "Your friend isn't here to save you from me," She gave a sly grin. "What are your plans?"

Rory's arms were folded in front of her. "I don't require Caro's help in defending myself. And aren't you guys tired of fighting all the time?" she said. "Don't you have something better to do?" She was referring to Anne's henchmen who stood behind her this time.

"Bring her down." Anne gave the order. Her minions obeyed her orders after she cracked her hands together. They took Rory's hands in theirs and dragged her to her knees. "I'm going to maim your face. You won't be able to seduce Mr. Eren that way." Anne folded her fist and instantly fell to the ground as she was about to strike Rory in the face. When she removed her hand from holding her head, she could see blood in her hand.

"I told you not to bother my friend again," As she reached Rory, Caroline sighed.

"Is that a stone?" Rory had approached her with the question. "Did you throw a stone at her? What would have happened if something had happened to her? What would you have done?"

"Obviously, bury her." Rory was able to get to her feet after Caro scared Anne's minions away. She wiped the dust off her knees. "If she died, no one would notice." Caro commented. Her hands were clasped around her waist.

"Next time, I'll get you. Guys, come on, let's get out of here." Anne and her minions fled.

"I told you not to use your fist for everything," Rory was irritated.

"And where did your pleasant conversation lead you?" Caro asked. "You were on the verge of getting a bruise on your face, and if I hadn't shown up, you would have received one. At the very least, you should be appreciative."

Rory let out a sigh of relief. She shifted her gaze to Caro. "What have you been up to? I've looked everywhere for you."

Caro encircled Rory with her arms. "I got the job, Rory, I'm happy I'm going to start working in the garden." She said, explaining. "Did you get anything?" She asked, but was shocked by Rory's hesitation. "Oh my God, don't tell me you ended up working inside the mansion?"

"Worse than that." Rory let out a sigh. "I'm going to be the personal maid for the young master."

"That's not good, Rory. It's terrible." Caro was also contributing nothing to the situation. "What would you do?"

"I don't have much of a choice. I was paid ten times, and you know how much money I needed."

"Wait, ten times? Does that mean 20,000?"

"$25,000 every month," Rory made a correction.

"That's a great deal for you to stay. You'll be out of here with your family in no time." She let out a sigh.

"Isn't that a good thing?" After seeing Caroline's expression, Rory asked.

"It's fine, but I'm hoping you don't die first."

"What do you mean?" Rory had asked, waiting for Caro to finish her statement.

"I'm not trying to terrify you, but bear in mind that any food brought to the young master will be eaten first by you, so be careful since his enemies want him dead and will go to any length to get him. When you start doing your job, Rory, your life isn't as valuable as you think. From tomorrow on, your life belongs to him."
