Chapter 4

Mr. Lewis began the interview and Eren sat silently in his chair, yawning like a bereft, sorrowful dog. Since he had gone to bed earlier the day before, he had been obliged to sit and watch the interview. He hasn't found the one he wants to be by his side. All of the other maids had irritated him, so they were assigned to the garden rather than to stay indoors.

Since he couldn't see, his mind had been racing with thoughts, and his trust in his butler grew more with each passing day.

He doesn't believe he has any other family except his butler, and if he does get to see one day, well, not that he hasn't given up yet, but a part of him had hoped he would. He would give his butler anything he desires. Mr. Lewis had been the only family member who had stuck by his side while the rest of his family had abandoned him.

When Rory got out of her car after parking it, she noticed that there were a lot of people about. Caroline had caught her attention. "Why are there many people here today? Didn't you mention they picked a few people just yesterday?"

"I'm not sure about that, Rory, but all these people you see here, they all want to feed their families."

"What are you doing here?" They were approached by a young woman with red hair. Since the minute they stepped inside Section C, Rory and Caro had disliked her, and she shared a name with Rory. Anne. "When you went to the big city, Rory Anne, you were all high and powerful." Anne burst out laughing, and her friends joined her from behind.

"What do you want, Anne?" Caro had approached her, but Rory had interfered since she didn't want a fight to break out as she was desperate for this job and would not let any insult from anyone get to her.

"Caro, let's go." Rory ignored Anna and proceeded to the front door, where people were waiting to be called into the house for their appointment.

"It would have been better if you had just let me deal with her. She doesn't know when to stop snooping on other people's lives." As they neared the lines and took their places, Caro murmured, gazing behind her shoulder and glanced across at Anne.

"Caro, you should take it easy. It's not every day that you use your fist to resolve a conflict. This isn't our property, and if they see us fighting, they can kick us out at any time." Rory let out a sigh. She doesn't have much of a choice. If she had chosen to fight when Anne caused her problems, they would have continued to argue, attracting the attention of security and possibly being removed. She doesn't want to be in a position where she has to convince her mother that she is once again useless.

Everyone turned to gaze at a girl who went out crying. Rory had locked eyes with Caro and heard a whisper from the front. "Mr. Eren had to have noticed something wrong with her." The lady had shook her head. She had her hair reaching the top of her shoulder, and she had a scarf over her head. She appeared to be in her late twenties. "From what I've heard, he's arrogant and blind."

"Blind?" Rory whispered quietly to Caro, who nodded. "How come you didn't inform me?"

"It wasn't required. Just stay away from him at all costs to avoid being picked on." Caro remarked.

Rory scowled and averted her gaze. Now she has to watch out for Mr. Eren picking on her or noticing her. He couldn't possibly be aware of her previous experience with household tasks, and she'd have to play dumb in order to avoid having to work inside the mansion. Anything to avoid meeting the spoiled man.

"The queue is moving at a fast pace. Prepare yourself."

Rory took a deep breath and closed her eyes, and her heart began to race the moment she heard her name.

"Now it's your turn," Caro said. As she entered the house, she waved to her friend.

When she first entered the house, she took a glance around. It was something she had wished for. Her brother, as well as her mother, would be content if they could dwell in a place like this.

"Could you please have a seat?" Rory followed the advice of an older man. She had scoured the area with her eyes and couldn't see anything that matched Eren Cyrus' description. She sat up straight after exhaling. She was relieved that she wouldn't have to worry about answering questions.

"Now go ahead and act stupid." She thought to herself as she glanced straight at the man who asked for her name while staring at his computer. "Rory Anne Spears," She gave a response.

"Age?" As he fixed his gaze on her, he kept his features straight, waiting for her to respond to his question.

Rory said, "Twenty four." She held her breath for a few moments, her gaze still fixed on the man and whatever he was staring at on his computer.

"Can you tell me about your experiences?"

She took a big breath.

She should be able to secure a post outside the house rather than within if she told him a couple of the things she had done. Her thoughts had strayed.

"Ma'am." When the older man called, he jolted her out of her thinking

Rory had no idea why she was saying so many things out of nowhere. "I've nannied both small children and elderly people. I'm incredibly skilled at making people feel at ease. I've also worked in businesses in a larger city and sold coffee across the street." She quickly covered her mouth with her hands, causing the man to chuckle. "I didn't mean to say everything like that." She spoke up right away.

Slowly, the man nodded. He seemed to have a liking for her."It is all right. You're free to speak— do you have any siblings?"

"I have one, and his name is Noah,"

"Good." After typing, he murmured and looked up at her. "We've saved your information. You can now join the rest of them, and Mr. Eren will pick which position you will be assigned to. Best of luck." He gave her a friendly smile.

Rory had a lot more questions to ask, but she decided to stand up and join the others. She was relieved to have passed the first test. All she has to do now is avoid Mr. Eren's attention, and she'll be OK. She closed her eyes and stared up at the ceiling. She had closed her eyes, praying not to be seen, but Eren's voice had made her open her eyes and stand to her feet.

As he neared, everyone stood up and formed a long line. As he appeared from the shadows, the first thing she noticed was his cane. She then saw his shoes before eventually catching a glimpse of his face. He was tall and slender. His golden hair was neatly cut and he wore black eyewear that concealed his eyes. His jawline was well-defined, and his nose and lips were the most beautiful she'd ever seen. He was frowning rather than smiling.

As his gaze rested on them, he removed his eyeglasses, terrifying the rest of them with his eyes. Rory had grown accustomed to seeing things like this after caring for elderly folks who could hardly stand or see. She wasn't terrified of him; rather, she was captivated by him and curious about how he had lost his vision. She was curious as to what had led a man like him to lose his ability to see. Is it because he witnessed the death of his parents when he was a child? Was it the reason his eyes were taken away from him as well?

She wanted to know more, but based on his actions, she could tell he harbored anger and wasn't willing to allow anyone to get close to him. He pointed his cane at a young lady, who quickly bent her head. Even when he was blind, she assumed he could see her reaction. "What's your name?" He sang a stern, powerful tune.

As she replied, her voice was trembling. "Monica Dunlope?"

Eren burst out laughing. "Dunlope?" he asked, shaking his head. His expression remained frowning, to the point where the lady began to pee herself. He mumbled to himself, "What an ugly name. These days, what kind of person is he choosing for me?" He exhaled and cracked his neck to both sides. He yelled. "You're fired!" As she ran out, the girl began to cry. Rory was speechless as she watched the girl run away, and all she could do was watch.

She grasped her fist and tried not to say anything that would result in her losing the job she had come to get. How could he fire her based just on her name? He should consider himself fortunate because he is wealthy.

He went on to the next person, who stepped out of the way and pushed Rory into her previous place. He firmly gripped his cane. "What is your name?" He asked Rory.

She couldn't believe she was afraid to respond as well. She took a deep breath and swallowed before speaking. "Rory Anne Spears," She had expected to be insulted but Eren didn't say anything but moved to the next person. He doesn't appear to care about anyone else anymore.

He was pulled to her just by her name. He yelled out, "Mr. Lewis! Fire the rest of them," Rory was found by her scent, and he pointed her out with his cane. "As of today, she works for me."
