POV: Damien

The penthouse had never felt so empty.

Damien stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching Manhattan glitter below him like a million broken promises. Three weeks since the divorce. Three weeks since Aria had walked out of his office and out of his life. Three weeks since he'd started to realize he'd made the biggest mistake of his existence.

His phone buzzed on the marble counter. He didn't need to look. He knew it was her—or rather, it wasn't her. It was another ignored call, another unanswered text, another reminder that she wanted nothing to do with him.

"Sir?" Michael Grant appeared in the doorway, tablet in hand. "The board is waiting for you in the conference room. They want to discuss the Richard Kane merger."

Damien didn't turn around. "Tell them I'll be there in ten minutes."

"Sir, they've been waiting for forty-five minutes. They're getting restless."

"Then let them be restless." Damien's voice was flat. "I don't care."

Michael hesitated, clearly unsure how to handle this new, unpredictable version of his boss. "Is everything alright?"

"No." Damien finally turned, his grey eyes cold. "Everything is not alright. But none of that is any of your concern. Tell the board I'll be there when I'm ready."

Michael retreated. Damien stood alone in the penthouse, staring at the space where Aria used to sit and read, her legs curled beneath her, her hair falling across her face like a dark curtain. He could still picture her there. Could still hear her voice, her laugh, her gentle teasing when he worked too late.

She'd been everything to him. And he'd thrown her away like garbage.

"I need to know." He'd sent that text three weeks ago, after receiving the anonymous message about her hospital visit. She'd responded with two cold words: I'm fine.

Then she'd stopped responding altogether.

Damien had spent the past three weeks trying to understand what had gone wrong. Not just in their marriage—he knew exactly where he'd failed there—but in the evidence that had convinced him of her betrayal. Something about it had been nagging at him, a persistent whisper in the back of his mind that wouldn't go away.

He'd asked his security team to review the files. They'd come back with the same conclusions: Aria's email had been used to send confidential information to Richard Kane. Financial records showed deposits from Kane's company to a shell account that traced back to her. Photographs placed her at the hotel where the meeting was supposed to have taken place.

But the more Damien looked at the evidence, the more something felt wrong.

The emails were too clean. Too perfectly worded. Aria was a brilliant woman, but she'd never been particularly careful with her digital footprint. She'd accidentally sent embarrassing texts to the wrong people, forgotten to delete her browsing history, left her password on sticky notes. But these emails were meticulously crafted, devoid of any trace of her personality.

The financial records were even more suspicious. The deposits were too large, too obvious. If Aria had been selling corporate secrets, she would have been smarter about it. She'd have used cash, or crypto, or something that couldn't be traced.

And the photographs... Damien had stared at them for hours. Aria at the hotel bar, talking to Richard Kane. Aria laughing at something he'd said. Aria handing him a folder that could have been anything—a menu, a contract, a report.

But one thing Damien had noticed, something that had been eating at him for weeks: Aria was wearing her grandmother's pendant in those photographs. The emerald pendant she never took off. The same pendant she'd been wearing when she'd signed the divorce papers.

He'd seen that pendant every day for five years. He'd kissed it when they made love. He'd held it when she cried. He knew exactly how it caught the light, how it rested against her collarbone, how it was the first thing he looked for when he woke up next to her.

And in those photographs, the pendant was wrong. The chain was slightly different. The emerald was darker. It was a replica. A good one, but a replica nonetheless.

Which meant someone had staged those photographs.

Someone had wanted him to believe Aria had betrayed him.

The conference room was silent when Damien walked in. His father, Charles Blackwell, sat at the head of the table, his face carved from stone. His brother Nathan was beside him, looking uncomfortable. The rest of the board watched Damien with barely concealed curiosity.

"You're late," Charles said.

"I'm here now." Damien took his seat at the opposite end of the table. "What's the agenda?"

"The Richard Kane merger." Charles pushed a stack of papers across the table. "We need to finalize the terms by the end of the week. The shareholders are getting nervous."

"Then let them be nervous." Damien didn't touch the papers. "I'm not signing anything until I've reviewed the original investigation files."

"Damien." Charles's voice was sharp. "We've been over this. The investigation was thorough. Your wife—"

"Ex-wife."

"Your ex-wife was guilty. The evidence was clear."

"The evidence was fabricated." Damien's voice was calm, but his grey eyes blazed. "I've been going through the files for weeks. Something doesn't add up."

Nathan leaned forward. "What do you mean, fabricated?"

"I mean someone went to a lot of trouble to make Aria look guilty. The emails are too perfect. The financial records are too obvious. And the photographs—" Damien paused, letting the tension build. "The photographs are staged. I'd stake my reputation on it."

Charles's face went pale. "That's a serious accusation."

"I know. That's why I'm bringing it to the board." Damien leaned back in his chair, his eyes sweeping across the room. "I want a full investigation. Not the original investigation, but a new one, conducted by an independent firm. And I want it done yesterday."

"You're asking us to reopen a closed case," one of the board members said. "That will cost millions. And it will send a signal to the market that Blackwell Holdings doesn't know what it's doing."

"I don't care what signal it sends." Damien's voice was hard. "I've spent five years building this company. I've spent three weeks realizing I destroyed the best thing that ever happened to me. And I'm not going to let that stand."

"Destroyed—" Charles started.

"Aria was innocent." Damien stood, his chair scraping against the floor. "I'm convinced of it. And I'm going to prove it, with or without this board's approval."

He walked out of the conference room before anyone could respond. His heart was pounding, his hands trembling with adrenaline. He'd just publicly challenged his father, his board, and the entire corporate structure that had defined his life.

And he didn't care.

"Damien!" Nathan's voice echoed down the hallway. "Damien, wait!"

Damien stopped, turning to face his brother. "What?"

Nathan caught up to him, his expression a mixture of concern and curiosity. "What's going on with you? You've been different since the divorce. Obsessed."

"I'm not obsessed. I'm trying to fix a mistake."

"A mistake?" Nathan's voice was incredulous. "You're talking about reopening a multi-million dollar investigation because you suddenly feel guilty about divorcing your wife."

"Because I was wrong." Damien's jaw tightened. "I was wrong about her. And someone inside this company made sure I stayed wrong."

Nathan studied him for a long moment. "What do you mean, someone inside this company?"

"The evidence came from Olivia Hart. She's been working for us for eight years. She's never made a mistake. But this time, everything was too clean, too convenient." Damien's eyes narrowed. "I want to know why."

"Damien, Olivia has been loyal to this family for almost a decade. She's not—"

"She's loyal to whoever pays her." Damien cut him off. "And right now, I'm not sure she's being paid by us."

Nathan's face went pale. "That's a serious accusation."

"I know." Damien turned away, his voice hardening. "That's why I'm going to make sure I'm right."
