(Serena)

I hear the front security alert ping once, low and soft.

James is home. A surge of happiness hits despite me having been angry with him earlier.

He doesn’t call out. Just walks in slowly, undoing his shirt.

I’m lying on the bed when he comes into view. His eyes go straight to mine. There’s caution there. Tiredness. But he smiles and says hi.

I sit up, on the edge of the bed, watching him move around the room like he’s still shaking off the night. His shoulders are tight. He’s quiet.

“So?” I ask. “What did she say?”

He doesn’t turn around right away. Instead, he pulls off his shirt and tosses it into the laundry chute before finally sitting on the bench at the end of the bed.

“She said she’s willing to see the baby.”

I’m surprised and wary. “See him? As in… actually go to the hospital?”

“No,” he says. “They wouldn’t allow that. Only here. She wants to see him when he gets back. With me beside her.”

I take that in. “She’s really going to try?”

  • The Billionaire Married Me, Then Forgot How to Love Me   074 Planning Ahead

(Savannah)There’s a knock at the outside guest wing door just after midnight.I unlock it and step back, keeping my face soft. Vulnerable.James stands there looking tired as hell.“You said it was important,” he says, voice low. “I can’t stay long.”I step aside, ignoring his promise to leave soon. He always says that. But James Hale never leaves anything messy and unfinished. And tonight, I’ve made myself just messy enough to keep him here. I know Serena will be pissed the longer he is here with me.Margot said they are on the edge of imploding. I just have to keep chipping away.“Come in,” I say gently. “I wasn’t sure you’d actually come.”He walks past me into the suite. “I didn’t want you spiraling. But I’d prefer to keep our time for daylight hours as much as possible. Of course I will still check in but I may not be able to be here every day. Work isn’t avoidable.”I close the door behind him and wrap my arms around myself. “I’m not spiraling, I promise. I just… I needed to ta

(Serena)The baby’s breathing is soft against James’s chest. His little mouth twitches like he’s dreaming something. We’re in his NICU room. It’s quiet and calm. James cradles him like he’s something sacred. I imagine him with our baby.“He’s more alert every time,” I whisper.“Getting stronger too. You see that grip earlier?” James smiles down at him. “Wouldn’t let go of my thumb for anything.”“He knows you.”James looks up. “And you. He always settles faster with you.”I don’t say it, but I feel it: that slow, low ache that comes when something that’s not yours still feels like it should be.James holds him like he was born to.Careful, steady, focused. He hums softly, rubbing his thumb over the baby’s knuckles. I settle in beside them. The exhaustion etched James’ face, but it softens as he feeds the baby. He’s in this. All the way in.And it makes me feel a little braver about our baby and our future. The baby finishes his feed without fuss and drifts to sleep. I lean down, brush

James message me all the details as they happened. It’s hard to believe that she is actually living in my home. I mean, okay, this place could house a small nation and not encroach on our space, it’s so big.But Savannah is different. She could live in another state and still encroach on our space.Savannah. Sleeping in the guest wing with a private medical team stationed outside her suite like we’re prepping her for a royal tour instead of stabilizing a woman who just attacked her nurses.I kill the engine, sit for a moment. My hands are still warm from holding the baby at the hospital. He fell asleep while I was burping him, tiny, beautiful. So soft. So full of need. I pressed my lips to his little temple before I left. I couldn’t help it.But Savannah has been cooperative since she got here apparently.I have to wonder

(Serena)Then Wes leans back in his chair. “So hey, that new place last week. The food was awesome, wasn’t it?”“Awesome, yes. What did you have? I had the chicken salad, and it was really amazing. Haylee had steak and sweet potato fries.” I ask him.“I had the lamb shanks. Heaven…”Mother looks sharply at him.“Not as good as yours, Mom. Don’t worry.”“I wasn’t.” She replies with a sweet smile. But we never let that smile fool us. It means business.“Nothing beats this food. Ever,” James says.“Suck-hole,” Wes says to James with a grin. “Anyway, Big Sis, you and Haylee didn’t have to ditch me and Ronan before dinner the other night.”I grin. “Sisters before misters. Always.”“What happened to brothers before others?” Wes asks with a smile.“That comes second place.”James glances between us. “Is this… something I should be worried about?”“Only if you plan to break her heart again,” Wes says, smiling, but not joking.Mom brings out dessert, her stress-baking classic: chocolate puddin

Give him a chance to breathe.”Mom opens the door before I can. She doesn’t even pretend to be impressed. “Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in.”He’s standing there, a bottle of wine in one hand and two bunches of flowers in the other. His smile is guarded. He knows this is enemy territory and still showed up anyway.“I said I’d be here,” he says. “Ladies, I brought you flowers.” He hands a bunch to my mother and one to me.“Lucky you finally turned up, Serena was beginning to look disappointed.”“I try not to make a habit of disappointing Serena twice in one week,” he replies with a small grin. Hoping to lighten the moment, no doubt.I give an awkward little laugh in support.“Mm. Maybe next time aim for ‘at all’ instead,’” she replies without missing a beat.He has the good sense to
