Chapter 60

~ Kesley ~

The elevator climbed toward the 7th floor, and I stood there clutching the bag of burgers, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears.

I was panting. Actually panting like I'd just run a marathon instead of speed-walking twenty feet to an elevator.

My reflection stared back at me from the polished metal doors. Hair slightly disheveled from where I'd run my hands through it nervously. Cheeks flushed pink. Eyes wide and slightly wild.

I looked like a mess.

I looke

  • The Billionaire's Binding Proposal   ~ 212

Chapter 212~Niklaus~I had left the mansion before I said something I could not take back. That was the only reason I had walked out when I did. Not because I was done fighting. Not because I had accepted anything that happened in that room. But because I had looked at my grandfather's face and felt something rise in my chest that I did not trust to come out in words, and I had made the decision to leave before it did.Now I was in my apartment. Not the house. The apartment I had kept before everything with Kesley started. The glass in my hand was my third. Or fourth. I had stopped counting after the second. I was sitting on the floor with my back against the sofa because I had started there and not moved. My father had called four times.I had not picked up once.Grandfather had not called.I could not decide which of those two facts bothered me more.My phone lit up on the floor beside me. Father again. I looked at it until the screen went dark. Then I picked up the glass."Sir."

Chapter 211~Taraji~I had just dropped my bag on the sofa when my phone buzzed.Kesley.Are you home?I kicked off my shoes and typed back immediately. Yess. What's up?No response.Did she want me to do something for her? I mean she was in Bali.I waited. I kept checking the screen. Nothing. I put the phone down and went to change out of my work clothes, and by the time I came back out and looked at the screen again there was still nothing from her. Then my doorbell rang.I opened it and Kesley was standing there in the hallway with her handbag on her shoulder and her eyes red and her face looked as if she had been holding herself together but now she couldn't anymore. She broke down. I was surprised. How come she was here? She opened her mouth and nothing came out."Come in, come in.” I said, stepping back. She came in and sat on the sofa and I sat beside her and I did not ask anything. I just waited. I had known Kesley long enough to know that she would get there in her own time

Chapter 210~Rebecca~I was in the middle of my second glass of wine when my phone rang.I looked at the screen. My informant. I set the glass down and picked up."Talk to me," I said."It has happened," she said. She sounded excited. "Grandfather called them back from the honeymoon. They came in this afternoon. He had the photographs. All of them."What was this? I didn't even have to lift a finger. I guess I had planted seed of doubt in his mind the last time I pulled something up.I sat up straighter. "And?""And it went exactly as you would expect. Your father was there too. Both of them. The girl was shown everything. The contract especially that you were not able to get. All of it laid out on the table."I smiled widely. I just listened. “Carry on.”"Father told her he was disappointed. That he had thought she was different." A pause. "Grandfather gave her a cheque. Told her to take her family and go. Said he never wanted to see her near the family again."I closed my eyes in j

Chapter 209~Kesley~I returned the cheque.I want to make that clear before anything else. I slid it back across the table toward grandfather with both hands, face up, and I did not say a single word while I did it. I just pushed it back and straightened up and looked at him.But I am getting ahead of myself.Few minutes agoLet me start from the beginning of the worst hour of my life. When Niklaus picked up that document and I saw the colour leave his face, something in my mind told me it was over before anyone said a word. I knew we were done for. The pictures that looks like it had been gotten from footages. Father spread the rest of the photographs across the table like he was laying out evidence. Which, I suppose, was exactly what he was doing.I stood there and looked at them. The document. Our signatures. My face went hot, I felt embarrassed and ashamed of myself. Everything I had done. Every careful step, every acting, the dinner and gala and family lunch and wedding. All

Chapter 208~Fred~Few hours agoI had been back in my apartment when grandfather called.Taraji had finally settled. I had stayed until her breathing evened out and her grip on the mug I had made her loosened and she had told me twice that she was fine, which she showed that she was sleepily and then she slept.I had let myself out quietly and crossed the hall to my own door. Dropping a note.I had been sitting at my desk, jacket off, going through the agent's background file on my laptop when my phone rang.Grandfather Specter.I picked it up immediately. "Good evening sir.""Fred." His voice was cold and unsettling. "Are you busy?""Not at all. What can I do for you?""Come to the house. I want to see you."I looked at the time. Just past eight. "Of course. I will be there in twenty minutes.""Good boy," he said, and hung up.I closed the laptop, put my jacket back on, and grabbed my keys.I did not think much of it on the drive over. Grandfather called me separately from Niklaus

Chapter 207~Niklaus~The flight home was the longest of my life. Not because of turbulence or delays or any practical reason. What could have happened to make grandfather that was so excited for our trip cut it off before it ended? We had tried, for the first hour or so. We went through every possibility we could think of."Could it be the company?" Kesley asked, her legs tucked under her, facing me. "Some board issue that came up suddenly?""Grandfather would not cancel our honeymoon for that.""Rebecca then.""I doubt. But, she has been too quiet too." I turned my glass in my hand."The contract," Kesley said quietly. She said it so quietly that it felt like that was the answer. She looked at me with her eyes showing fear."No," I said. I made sure my voice carried the weight of certainty even though I was not so sure myself. "I was thorough. There is nothing to find."She nodded. But she did not look completely convinced and honestly I could not blame her because I was not complet
