LOGINMia's POV
I look around my home and satisfied with what I'm seeing, fall on the couch.I finished my exams a two days ago and slept like I was competing with the dead that night.Juggling a 10 hours daily job with studying was almost impossible. My house was a mess. I didn't do my laundry for a whole week.I love to cook but I've been eating takeouts for weeks now. Exams done, I finally had the time to clean up today. My boss, Mr. Smith is like a father figure to me. He gave me the week off to rest.I can't wait to enjoy the next few days. I already subscribed to N*****x on my system, I'm gonna be seeing a lot of korean dramas.I'm a kdrama addict, I could watch a movie for six hours nonstop.I switch on the TV just for the background noise. It's something I always do when I'm home, gives me a feeling of company.Just as I'm about to stand up and order dinner, I see something on TV that catches my eye. It's an interview with the CEO of D.B and he's no other than the guy I ran into two days ago.D.B. Investments is one of the leading if not the top real estate management company in California.Damn my stupid mouth! He wears a suit like it was made for him, it probably was.I've still not gotten over how hot he is. To be honest, I've thought of him so many times since we met.Would be nice to have his baby, a mini him running around the house.Wooah! Where the fuck did that come from?I can't believe I'm thinking of carrying his babies when I fucked up my opportunity with him.Damien Black.Even his name gives me shivers.Well, since he's the CEO, he's not going to be the one doing the recruiting himself. We won't have to meet then.I get up and go order dinner. *********************I'm in school for the first time in two weeks, feels like it's been two years. I hundred percent do not miss it though.Okay maybe ninety five percent?I'm here to see one of my lecturers, he was my favorite. He was every of my female classmates favourite. We call him Lucien as per his request and to be honest, calling him Mr. Hathaway would be real weird because he looks so young.I still don't know how he's a lecturer at his age, he doesn't look like he's that much older than I am.He was everyone's favorite but I was his favorite. I was one of the top five students in my class. I worked my ass off to pay my bills, there was no way I was gonna graduate without honors.Lucien wants me to meet someone, I wonder who it could be as I knock the door to his office."Mia, come in."That never ceases to amaze me. He always knows who is at the door before they speak, always.I push the door to his office open and go in, silently closing it behind me.He's standing with his ass perched at the edge of his table and there's someone sitting on the couch.I take a second to appreciate the beauty that is him. Tall and built, long hair due for cutting kissing his neck, the prettiest gray eyes and sharp jawline."Hello, Mia" he greets."Hello, Lucien" I say with a bit of trepidation. I don't know why I suddenly feel so nervous, it's not the first time I'm coming to his office."You asked me to see you.""That I did" he says as he stands."I want you to meet someone" he says as he gestures to the guy seated on the couch.I forgot to even acknowledge the person which is unlike me.I turn to the person with a smile forming on my face that quickly stops when I see who it is. I don't even know that my eyes have gotten so big. It's the guy I bumped into!"Well, hello there. Nice to meet you, again" he says with a smirk.I send a silent message to karma you're a fucking bitch girl. I can almost swear I saw her laughing at me."You guys have met?" Lucien asks."Yes, we have" Mr. Black drawls staring pointedly at him. There is a look of surprise on Lucien's face as he lifts an eyebrow, "wait, really?" he asks Mr. Black and the latter just nods."Wow" he says.Did he tell his friend about me? This is getting worse."I'm sorry about the other day sir" I start "I was in a hurry because I was late for my exams". "I don't know if I should accept your apology or not" he says. This guy is such a jerk, I shouldn't be surprised though, handsome guys are like that.My dad was like that too. Swept my mum off her feet with his pretty face and abandoned us.Lucien is the only exception."You don't have to. If we're being honest with each other, it was your fault as much as it was mine" I say and immediately feel mortified.Gooosh! I just can't help myself.Lucien bursts into laughter."As interesting as this is", he says as his laughter subsides "I called you both here to introduce you to each other"."Damien meet Mia, she's one if the top students in her class and my favorite".Hearing him introduce me as his favorite student gives me butterflies.Don't look at me like that, you'd feel the same way if you were in my shoes."Mia meet Damien Black, he's my best friend and CEO of D.B." he says.Like definitely doesn't attract like. They have two different personalities.Mr. Black stands up and offers his hand for a shake which I accept. It happens then.I'm an avid reader of romance novels, my favorite author is Kristen Ashley and I've read all of her books. You know that moment when a guy and lady connect and there are electric shocks and the rest that seems like a myth? I feel it then.Immediately I put my hand in his, it's like a shock passes through his hand to mine and I have to remove my hand immediately."Nice to meet you Mia" he says with a sly smile on his face. It's like he knows what just happened to me."Same here Mr. Black" I mumble."Just Damien please. Mr. Black means I have to accept the fact that I'm old" he says. It's really weird that they're both technically older than I am, but look like my age mates."So, what exactly do you want me to do Luce?" he asks Lucien."It's simple. Give her a chance to work with you"."How would I know she's good enough to work with me?""Take my word for it" Lucien says.At that, Damien looks at him with his eyebrows raised which makes Lucien chuckle."Come on D, it was just one time. Trust me".I guess there's a story there.Damien nods his head "Fine" he says.Oh my goodness! I just got a job opportunity at D.B.I'm so excited I go to Lucien and give him a quick hug."Thanks a bunch sir, I promise not to disappoint you" I say to him almost screaming."Shouldn't I be the one you're making that promise to? You do know I'm the one offering you the opportunity right?" Damien asks me sarcastically.Well, that's the truth."Thank you sir. I promise not to disappoint you" I say."I have one condition though" he says as he goes to take his seat again. Here we go. I should have expected that, the transaction was too smooth.DAMIEN'S POVLucien doesn't laugh when I tell him. That's how I know it's serious."Say that again," he says, setting down the glass he'd been nursing since I walked into his study uninvited twenty minutes ago."The mark hasn't faded. It's been over a month.""That's not possible.""That's what I said. In a boutique. In front of Mia. Which, incidentally, is the second time in one conversation I told her something wasn't possible without explaining why, so if she wasn't suspicious of me before, she certainly is now."Lucien drags a hand down his face. In all our years of friendship, I've seen him amused, irritated, occasionally furious. I've rarely seen him this quiet."D. Marks fade on humans. Every single time. That's the whole design of it — it's meant to last exactly long enough for the bond to be recognized by both sides, then it disappears, because humans can't carry a permanent mark without it doing something to them. It's not built to stay.""I'm aware of the mechanics, Luce. I
Dating my boss in secret is, it turns out, a significant amount of work. We've settled into a rhythm without ever really discussing it — I stay professional at the office, address him as Damien only when absolutely no one's listening, and pretend I don't know exactly what his hand on the small of my back means when he walks me to the elevator "as a courtesy to a valued employee." He's a terrible liar in the way that people who are used to always getting what they want are terrible liars — not because he says the wrong thing, but because he doesn't bother trying very hard.Priya, mercifully, has not caught on. Mariam, I'm almost certain, has. She hasn't said a word, but there's a look she gives me sometimes over her coffee that says she's known since roughly week one and is simply waiting for me to admit it first.Three weeks into whatever this is, Damien picks me up from a "work dinner" — a real one, this time, with actual clients — and we swing by a boutique downtown because he wants
MIA’S POVI wake up in a bed that isn’t mine, wrapped in sheets that smell like cedar and something else I can’t name, and it takes me a full ten seconds to remember why my head is pounding like this and why I’m this naked.Oh.Oh no.Damien’s side of the bed is empty, but I can hear water running somewhere down the hall, and I use the minute alone to have a full, silent meltdown into his pillow. We had sex. I had sex with my boss. On his birthday. After I baked him a cake like some kind of unhinged Pinterest housewife. My shoulder aches, a dull, warm throb just below my collarbone, and when I twist to look at it in the mirror across the room, there’s a mark there—not quite a bruise, not quite a hickey, dark and strange at the edges. Great. Add “walking around with a hickey the size of a fist” to today’s list of problems. The bathroom door opens and Damien steps out, hair damp, sweatpants low on his hips, and every ounce of my composure leaves the building.“Morning,” he says. His voi
MIA’S POVThree weeks in and I’ve learned the rhythm of this place. Coffee before nine or don’t speak to me. Priya gossips like it’s an Olympic sport. And Damien Black finds a reason to call me into his office at least once a day, always with some file he could have just as easily emailed me.I’ve stopped pretending I don’t like it.“You’re doing it again,” Darcy says over the phone, and I can hear the smirk in her voice without even seeing her face.“Doing what?”“That sighing thing. The one you do when you’re thinking about your hot, broody, probably-secretly-a-good-guy boss.”“I do not sigh.”“Mia. You’ve sighed twice in the last ninety seconds.”I flop back onto my bed, phone pressed to my ear, and stare at the ceiling like it has answers. “It’s complicated, Dee.”“It’s not complicated. You like him, he clearly likes you, nobody’s married, nobody’s dying. Kiss the man.”“He’s my boss.”“He’s the CEO. Different rules apply to CEOs. It’s basically a movie trope at this point.”I don
MIA’S P.O.VMy first day at D.B. and I’ve already sweated through my blouse.I got here forty minutes early because I couldn’t stand the thought of being late twice to anything involving Damien Black, but now I’m just sitting in the lobby like an idiot, clutching my Chanel bag like it’s a life raft.“Miss Sanderson?” A woman with a sleek bob and a headset calls my name. “I’m Mariam, Mr. Black’s PA. I’ll be showing you around today.”Mariam. The one who was shocked he picked out my outfit himself. I file that away. She walks fast, the kind of fast that says she’s got twelve other things to do today, and I have to half jog to keep up as she rattles off department names and floor numbers I know I won’t remember.“You’ll be shadowing in Operations for the first two weeks, then you’ll rotate through Sales,” she says, pressing the elevator button. “Mr. Black wanted you to get a feel for the whole company before you settle into a track.”“Mr. Black decided that?” I ask, surprised. CEOs don’t
For some reason, I'm nervous about seeing my face. I open my eyes slowly and what I see utters me speechless. This isn't me.This can't be me.I turn disbelieving eyes to her. "Uhn uhn, you got that right sugar. That, is what I meant by real reaction.""Darcy, what did you do?" I gasp as I stare at my reflection in the mirror.Darcy beams with pride as she steps back to admire her handiwork. "I just enhanced your natural beauty, Mia. You look stunning!"I can't believe what I was seeing. My eyes appear brighter, my skin is glowing, and my features seem more defined. I look like a completely different person, yet still unmistakably myself."I can't believe this is me," I say, still in awe.Darcy chuckles. "Believe it, girlfriend. You've got the looks and the attitude to pull off anything."I smile, feeling a newfound confidence wash over me. I never thought of myself as a model, but seeing myself in a different light makes me realize that maybe I have been selling myself short."Thanks
"Hmm, what's the condition?" I ask.He crosses his legs and with one of his arms resting on the arm of the couch, looks like he holds the whole of America in his hands."How about you sit first?" he says, gesturing to the couch opposite him."I'm fine standing sir.""Two conditions actually. The fi
As I rush out the door, I grab my coffee cup and take a sip, feeling the warmth of the liquid spreading through my body.Today's not starting out great for me. Traffic on the streets of New York is a bitch. My exams start at 9:00am and it's 8:20 am already.By the time I make it into the school prem
"Come on, Mia. I've been asking you to do this for me for ages, can't you indulge me just once?"That's true though, she's been asking me to model for her for years now. She made some beautiful pieces using my measurements, and she's refused to make them for someone else so they can model the designs
Damien's POVWhen Lucien asked me to meet at his office, I didn't know his intentions. I was actually surprised because in all the years he's been teaching, he has never asked me to help with a student's employment.Lucien could stop teaching if he didn't want to, he was one of the major shareholde
