Chapter 1: A Desperate Bargain
“I’ll marry you… but only if you save my mother.” Melinda Jason’s voice shook as she stood in the big fancy office. She was looking straight at Stanley Stewart, the powerful billionaire everyone feared. Stanley leaned back in his chair and stared at her with cold eyes. “You’re offering to marry me just like that?” he asked. “What makes you think I would help your mother?” Melinda took a deep breath. “Because I can give you what you want. You need a child, right? An heir. I’ll be your wife and give you that child. Just please… save my mom.” Stanley studied her for a long moment. She looked tired and scared, but there was something strong in her eyes. At twenty-two, she was pretty, with long dark hair and a face that showed she hadn’t had an easy life. “You know what this means?” he said flatly. “This won’t be a love marriage because I don’t do love. You’ll live in my house, sleep in my bed when I want, and give me a child. After that, we can talk about divorce but until then, you follow my rules.” Melinda’s heart was beating fast. She thought about her mother lying weak in the hospital. The doctors said she only had a few weeks left without the special treatment. This was her only hope. “I understand,” she said quietly. “As long as you help her first.” Stanley stood up and walked over to her. He was tall and looked even more intimidating up close. “Good, now, we have a deal.” *** Two weeks later, Melinda stood in front of the mirror in a beautiful white wedding dress. It was her wedding day, but she didn’t feel happy. She felt trapped. She had hardly seen Stanley since they signed the papers. He had kept his promise, her mother was now getting the best treatment in a private hospital. But tonight… A knock came at the door. “It’s time, Miss Jason.” The wedding ceremony was quick and cold. Stanley looked handsome in his black suit, but his face showed no emotion, no sweet words and smiles. They were married in minutes. That night, in his huge mansion, Stanley closed the bedroom door behind them. The room was big and expensive, but Melinda felt scared. “Take off your dress,” he said in a deep voice. Melinda’s hands were shaking as she slowly unzipped the gown. It fell to the floor, leaving her in just her white underwear. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment. “Stanley… Can we please be gentle?” she whispered. He stepped closer and lifted her chin. “This isn’t about being gentle, I need an heir. Do not start expecting romance or love from me.” He kissed her hard, almost in an angry manner. Then he picked her up and laid her on the big bed. Melinda was a virgin, and she was terrified, when he pushed into her without warning, sharp pain tore through her body. She cried out and grabbed the sheets tightly. Tears ran down her face as he moved roughly, like he was just doing a job. “You’re nothing but a vessel,” he said coldly in her ear. “A body to carry my child, that’s all I want.” Melinda bit her lip to stop herself from sobbing. The pain in her body was bad, but the pain in her heart was worse. Stanley didn’t care about her at all. When he finally finished, Stanley got up and went to the bathroom without saying a word. He didn’t even look back at her. Melinda curled up on the bed, pulling the blanket over her naked body. She felt dirty and used, she watched her blood stained the expensive sheet. “What have I gotten myself into?” She asked herself with teary eyes. Later that night, while Stanley slept, Melinda stood by the large window looking at the city lights. Her mother was safe now and that was the most important thing to her. But as she looked back at the man sleeping in the bed, the man who had just treated her so coldly, a heavy feeling settled in her chest. ‘This marriage was going to be much harder than she thought.’ And deep down, she had a bad feeling that Stanley Stewart was hiding even darker secrets.Three days into the lockdown, the walls of Melinda's townhouse had begun to feel less like shelter and more like a cage, Liam's restless energy bouncing off every surface, Stanley's constant presence a comfort that had started, inevitably, to carry its own particular strain."I feel like a prisoner in my own house," Melinda admitted quietly, late one evening after Liam had finally exhausted himself into sleep, security personnel stationed at discreet intervals around the perimeter, the curtains drawn against windows that had once let in ordinary evening light without fear attached to it."I know," Stanley said, settling beside her on the couch, exhaustion evident in every line of his posture. "I wish I had something better to offer you than patience and waiting.""You don't have to offer anything," Melinda said, leaning into him despite the fatigue weighing on both of them. "You're already here. That's more than I had for six years."They sat together in comfortable silence for a whil
Marcus returned just after dawn, his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night of tracing, cross-referencing, and chasing down the thin, scattered threads of Irina Rostova's carefully hidden life, and the moment Stanley saw his face, he knew whatever Marcus had found wouldn't offer the relief either of them desperately needed."Sit down," Marcus said, and Stanley, standing at the kitchen counter with a cold cup of coffee he hadn't touched in hours, did exactly that, Melinda sliding into the chair beside him, her hand finding his beneath the table."We traced a financial pattern," Marcus said, laying his laptop open between them. "Offshore accounts, shell structures, the kind of layered concealment that takes real expertise to build. Irina's payments, the ones funding her movements since she vanished, originate from the exact same account structure as the payments Finch was funneling upward from Pinnacle Shipping."Stanley stared at the screen, the implications arranging themselves with si
Marcus's phone buzzed sharply against the kitchen counter, shattering the tense quiet, and he snatched it up with the particular urgency of a man who'd been half-expecting exactly this interruption."Unknown number," he said, frowning at the screen before answering it on speaker, his eyes flicking to Stanley in silent warning. "This is Blackwell."Static crackled for a moment, and then a woman's voice emerged, calm, faintly accented, deliberate in a way that made the hair rise on the back of Stanley's neck. "Mr. Blackwell. I watched the interview tonight. Very touching. Very informative."Melinda's hand flew to her mouth. Stanley stepped forward instinctively, as though proximity to the phone could somehow protect the people standing beside him."Irina," Marcus said, his voice flat and controlled despite the sudden tightening of his jaw."You've been quite thorough, searching for me," the voice continued, unbothered. "Rostova, Volkov, names from a story you think you already understan
"I'll always catch the monsters," Stanley murmured against Liam's hair, the same quiet promise he'd made weeks earlier now carrying a weight he hadn't fully understood at the time, and over the boy's head, he met Marcus's eyes with silent, urgent question."We need to talk," Marcus said quietly, gesturing toward the hallway. "Privately."Melinda carried Liam toward the living room, settling him in front of a cartoon with practiced calm despite the fear still trembling beneath her composed exterior, and Stanley followed Marcus into the kitchen, his whole body coiled tight with the particular readiness that came from facing a threat he could neither see nor fully predict."What's the plan?" Stanley asked, keeping his voice low enough that it wouldn't carry."Full lockdown, starting tonight," Marcus said. "I want a security perimeter around this house that doesn't rely on visible presence alone, cameras, motion sensors, a rotating team stationed close enough to respond instantly but disc
"Brave," Melinda repeated, something fierce and tired moving across her face as the car pulled into her driveway. "I hope brave is enough, Stanley, because I don't think I have another version of myself left to offer if this doesn't work."Her phone buzzed before Stanley could answer, the first of what would become an avalanche, and she glanced down at the screen with visible dread before her expression shifted into something sharper, more alert."It's Marcus," she said, answering immediately and putting it on speaker between them."We found her," Marcus said, his voice tight with urgency that cut through the exhausted relief of the interview entirely. "Irina Rostova. Property records led us to a rental unit under a name she'd been using, but Stanley, we were two hours too late. The unit's been cleared out, completely. Whoever packed it did so fast, and recently, within the last day or two at most."Stanley's stomach dropped, the brief, fragile peace of the interview's aftermath colla
"I'm ready," Stanley said, pulling back slightly to study her face in the gray early light of the following morning, Liam's cereal bowl already clinking against the kitchen counter behind them as the boy prepared for a day at Rosa's old friend's house, arranged specifically so he wouldn't be home to witness whatever unfolded on television that evening. "Whatever they ask, I'm ready to answer it honestly, exactly the way we discussed.""Good," Melinda said, straightening his tie with hands that trembled only slightly now, the fear of the previous night settled into something steadier, more resolute. "Because in about four hours, several million people are going to watch us try to explain six years of complicated history in under forty-five minutes."The studio, when they arrived, felt sterile and overbright compared to the ordinary warmth of Melinda's kitchen, rows of equipment and crew members moving with practiced efficiency around two chairs positioned at careful angles beneath hars

Chapter 2: Cold Morning“Good morning,” Melinda said softly as Stanley walked into the dining room the next morning. She had woken up early, her body still sore from the night before. But she tried to push the pain away. She had made breakfast of eggs, toast, and coffee hoping to start their marr
