I smiled as I hit send and dropped my phone back into my purse. The elevator rose smoothly toward the eighteenth floor. I caught my reflection in the mirrored walls. My dark hair fell in soft waves over my shoulders. The pale blue dress Mia helped me pick hugged my curves just right.
That afternoon, she’d spent almost an hour talking me into dressing up. "Trust me," she’d said, grinning. "A man doesn’t book a fancy hotel suite for your anniversary unless he’s got something huge planned."
Something huge. Just thinking about it warmed my cheeks.
For weeks, Daniel had been off. Distracted on calls. Secretive about his plans. Always saying work was killing him. Normally, it would’ve pissed me off. But tonight it all clicked. He’d been planning a surprise.
At least that’s what I told myself.
I held the bouquet of roses tighter against my chest and smiled. Four years. Four years of love, patience, and believing we had a real future. Daniel wasn’t rich. He wasn’t some big shot. He wasn’t perfect. But he was mine. And I loved him with everything I had.
The elevator dinged softly. I stepped into the fancy hallway. My heels clicked on the polished marble as I walked toward Suite 1808. Butterflies danced in my stomach.
Maybe tonight was the night. After four years, maybe Daniel would finally drop to one knee. The thought made my heart pound.
I stopped outside the suite and checked myself one last time. Dress good. Hair good. Makeup good. Hopeful smile in place.
I took a deep breath and knocked. Nothing. A small frown crossed my face. Maybe he was inside setting something up. I waited, then knocked again. Still nothing.
I checked my phone. I'm already here. Can't wait to see you. Sent less than twenty minutes ago. He had to be in there.
Just as I reached for the handle, a sound came through the door. A woman’s laugh.
I froze. The roses shifted in my hands. I let out a nervous little laugh. There had to be an explanation.
Then I heard it. A low moan. Another one right after.
My blood ran cold. "No..." The word barely came out. My heart slammed in my ears. Every part of me screamed to turn around. Walk away. Pretend I never heard. But I couldn’t.
I grabbed the handle. It turned. The door wasn’t locked. My stomach sank. I pushed it open with shaking fingers.
Expensive perfume hit me first. Women’s heels scattered by the bed. A black dress crumpled on the floor. The room was dim, lit only by the bedside lamps. It felt intimate. Wrong.
And on the bed… my whole world crashed.
The bouquet fell from my hands onto the carpet. Two bodies twisted together under the sheets. One was Daniel. The other turned slowly.
Everything inside me broke.
"Mia?" The whisper tore from my throat.
My best friend froze. All the color drained from her face. Daniel’s eyes went wide with horror. For a long moment, nobody moved. Nobody spoke.
I stared at them. The woman who called herself my sister. The man who swore he’d never hurt me. The two people I trusted most — half-naked in the same bed.
"Aria..." Daniel croaked.
I blinked hard. Once. Twice. This had to be a nightmare. But they were still there. Still guilty.
"Who is she?" The words slipped out before I could stop them. I hated myself the second I said it. Of course I knew her. I knew her favorite food. Her birthday. Her childhood pets. Mia wasn’t some stranger. She was my best friend. But right then I didn’t recognize her at all.
"Aria, please..." Mia whispered.
"Don't." My voice shook. "Don’t say my name."
She shut up fast. Daniel jumped off the bed and grabbed his shirt. "Baby, listen to me."
I laughed. It sounded hollow. Broken. "Baby? You’re calling me baby while you’re standing there with another woman?"
Guilt twisted across his face. That made it worse. Because guilt meant he knew. This wasn’t some accident. It was a choice. One they’d made again and again behind my back.
"Aria, it’s not what it looks like."
I stared at him. Then at the bed. Then back at him. "Really? Because it looks exactly like what I think it looks like."
They said nothing. The silence pressed down on me. My chest hurt. Memories flooded in. Four years of birthdays. Four years of anniversaries. Four years of plans and dreams.
I’d pictured marrying him. Growing old together. Now every memory felt ruined. Every kiss. Every promise. All lies.
"How long?" I asked quietly.
No answer.
"How long?"
Mia looked down. Daniel looked away. That told me everything.
The room felt too small. Too tight. I could barely breathe. "Oh my God..."
I stepped back. Then again. Had they been laughing at me the whole time? Was I really that blind?
Mia started crying. Daniel moved toward me. I jerked away. "Don’t touch me." My voice cracked. "I trusted you. I trusted both of you."
Tears finally spilled down my cheeks. I didn’t want to cry. But my heart was breaking right there in front of them.
Without another word, I turned and walked out. Daniel shouted my name behind me, voice full of panic. I didn’t stop. Didn’t look back. My heels echoed down the hallway like gunshots. Tears blurred everything as I jabbed the elevator button.
The doors were closing when I heard bare feet running up.
"Aria, wait!" Mia’s voice.
I slapped the door open button without thinking. The doors slid apart. There she stood, my former best friend, in nothing but Daniel’s oversized shirt. Hair a mess. Mascara running down her face.
She was panting, eyes desperate. "There’s something you need to know," she said, voice shaking. "Before you walk away… before you hate us forever."
I laughed bitterly. The sound came out raw. Ugly. "I think I’ve seen enough."
Mia swallowed. She glanced back at the suite like she feared Daniel might hear. Then she met my eyes.
"I’m—"
The tension in their relationship had reached a boiling point.Isabella’s calls had become more frequent and more urgent. She texted Aria late at night with warnings, old documents from the Sterling scandal, and photos of the destruction the Blackwoods had suffered. “He’s using you,” she wrote in one message. “Leave before he destroys you and Ethan the way they destroyed us.”Aria was crumbling under the pressure. She loved Adrian deeply, but the constant warnings planted seeds of doubt that refused to die. She became quieter, more withdrawn, even during their most intimate moments.Adrian noticed everything. He saw the fear in her eyes. He felt her hesitation when he touched her. And instead of confronting her, he used it.He accelerated his plans. While Aria was at work, he met Richard in a secure location.“Isabella is becoming a problem,” Adrian said coldly. “She’s feeding Aria lies. Increase the pressure on Marcus. I want him desperate. Cut off his remaining suppliers. Call in ol
Isabella’s return changed everything.Aria couldn’t stop replaying her sister’s warning in her head. The sharp, urgent tone. The certainty in her voice. “He’s dangerous. He’s been waiting years to destroy our family.” Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Isabella’s face — older, harder, but still the same sister who had disappeared when everything fell apart. The sister who had been deeper in the Sterling scandal than their father ever admitted. The warning haunted her. It made her question every touch, every kiss, every sweet word from Adrian. She became distant without meaning to. She checked her phone constantly, jumped at every notification, and pulled away slightly when Adrian reached for her. She tried to hide it, but Adrian noticed immediately. Of course he noticed. The man who had built an empire from nothing didn’t miss subtle changes in the woman he was obsessed with. One evening, after Ethan was asleep, Adrian gently pulled her onto his lap on the couch. His hands rested
The challenge hit like a storm.Aria was at the park with Ethan when her phone rang. An unknown number. She almost ignored it, but something made her answer.“Aria.” The voice was sharp, familiar, and cold. “It’s Isabella.”Aria’s blood ran cold. Her older sister — the one who had disappeared years ago after the Sterling scandal — was on the line.“Where are you?” Aria whispered, watching Ethan chase a butterfly.“Back in the city,” Isabella said. “I heard you’re involved with Adrian Blackwood. End it. Now. That man is dangerous. He’s been waiting years to destroy our family. Stay away from him before you drag Ethan into this mess.”Aria’s hand shook. “You don’t get to tell me what to do. You left us. You ran away after everything happened.”Isabella laughed bitterly. “I ran because I knew what was coming. The Blackwoods don’t forgive. They destroy. If you’re with him, you’re already in his trap. Leave before it’s too late.”The call ended abruptly. Aria stood frozen, heart pounding.
Adrian insisted on taking Aria and Ethan out for a relaxed lunch at a nice waterfront restaurant. It was meant to be a simple, happy afternoon. Ethan was excited, pointing at the boats outside the window and chattering nonstop. They were halfway through their meal when Aria suddenly froze.Daniel walked in with a woman on his arm — his new wife, a polished, elegant woman who looked nothing like Mia. Aria had heard about the marriage through mutual friends a few months ago, but seeing them together still felt like a punch to the gut.Daniel spotted them almost immediately. A smug, arrogant smile spread across his face as he led his wife straight toward their table.“Aria,” Daniel said, voice dripping with fake surprise. “Didn’t expect to see you here. And with company.”His eyes flicked to Adrian, then to Ethan, calculating. “Cute kid. Yours?”Aria’s grip tightened on her glass. “Yes. This is my son, Ethan.”Daniel’s new wife gave a polite but bored smile. Daniel, however, couldn’t res
