Riley's POV

The motel room smelled like cigarettes as Lily slept fitfully on the sagging bed while I sat by the window, watching the news coverage of my humiliation.

Brett's press conference played on repeat, each word a fresh wound.

"Her situation was unfortunate."

"The deception was disappointing."

"That remains to be seen."

I'd known he would do this. Known he would choose his reputation over me. But hearing it, seeing the cold dismissal in his eyes, felt like dying.

My phone rang; it was an unknown number.

"Riley? Riley, is that you?"

I froze. "Mom?"

"I saw the news. I saw what you've become."

My mother's voice was sharp with disgust. I hadn't spoken to her in two years, not since she'd told me I was "dead to her" for getting pregnant.

"Mom, I can explain"

"Explain? Explain what? That you've been living like an animal? That you've been whoring yourself to some billionaire?"

"It's not like that."

"Isn't it? The whole world is watching you dig through garbage, Riley. Do you know how

Brett's POVI woke up to seventeen missed calls and forty-three text messages. The first headline I saw made my blood turn to ice: "BILLIONAIRE'S HOMELESS GIRLFRIEND: THE SHOCKING TRUTH BEHIND THE FAIRY TALE."My hands shook as I scrolled through the article. Riley's POVMy phone buzzed with incoming texts. Photo after photo flooded my screen, each one a knife to my heart.Me sleeping in my car, Lily curled against my chest.Me begging outside a restaurant, tears streaming down my face.Me digging through a dumpster behind a grocery store, looking for expired food."No," I whispered, my legs giving out. I slumped against the window, the phone trembling in my hands."Oh yes," Victoria's laughter was crystal clear. "Quite the collection, don't you think? My photographer has been very thorough.""Where did you get all those pictures? How is it possible?.""Nothing is impossible with money. Ever since Brett started parading you around like his little charity case, I had to make my move. I can’t allow you to disrupt my plans."The photos kept coming. Me washing Lily's face with water from a public fountain. Me crying in a hospital parking lot. Me holding a cardboard sign that read "Please help - sick child.""These go public tomorrow morning,"

Riley's POVI stood frozen in the kitchen long after Victoria left, her words echoing in my mind like poison. The strawberry juice on the counter looked like blood now, sticky and red, staining everything it touched. He said 'I love you.'My hands shook as I gripped the marble countertop. The expensive stone felt cold against my palms, as cold as Brett's voice when he'd dismissed me last night."Just talked," I whispered to the empty kitchen. "He said they just talked."But Victoria's phone glowed in my memory. That photo of them together, his arm around her, both laughing like they'd never been apart. Like I'd never existed. The elevator chimed in the distance. Brett was home.My heart hammered against my ribs as his footsteps approached. I couldn't face him. Not yet. Not with Victoria's words still burning in my mind."Riley?"I turned away, busying myself with the fruit I'd been cutting. "In here."Brett appeared in the doorway, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled. He

Victoria's POVI found Riley in the kitchen the next morning, looking like she hadn't slept. Perfect."Good morning, dear," I said, settling at the breakfast bar. "You look tired.""I'm fine.""Are you? You seem... upset about something."Riley continued chopping fruit, her movements mechanical. "Just tired.""Hmm." I picked up a strawberry, examining it. "I suppose last night was difficult for you.""Why would it be difficult?""Well, Brett calling me. Asking me to come over. We talked for hours."Riley's knife stilled. "That's nice.""It was more than nice. It was... revealing.""I don't need to hear this.""Don't you? I think you do." I took a bite of strawberry, savoring both the sweetness and Riley's discomfort. "We talked about us. About what we had.""Victoria""About what we could have again."Riley set down the knife. "What do you want?""I want you to understand something. About Brett. About what he really needs.""And what's that?""He needs someone who can challenge him. S

Riley's POVVictoria started coming by every day after that. Always perfectly dressed, always welcome, always treating me like I was invisible.Today she brought lunch from some expensive restaurant downtown. I watched her and Brett eat from the good china while I cleaned the kitchen. Since Victoria started visiting Mrs Cheni took a leave saying “I can’t just stand her toxic behavior, waltzing back into the young master's life after everything she put him through”."The Dover sole was incredible," Victoria said, dabbing her lips with a napkin. "Almost as good as that place in London. Do you remember? Near Harrods?""The one with the terrible service?" Brett actually smiled. "You sent back the wine three times.""It was corked! I have standards."They laughed together, and something twisted in my chest. I'd never made him laugh like that. Never seen him so relaxed, so natural."We should go back," Victoria said.
