Riley's POV

The motel room felt like a prison cell as I watched Lily's small chest rise and fall with labored breaths. The fluorescent light overhead flickered intermittently, casting shadows that made her pale skin look almost translucent.

"Mommy, my chest hurts."

Lily's voice was barely a whisper, but it cut through me like a blade. I pressed my palm against her forehead. It was burning hot.

"I know, baby. We're going to get you help."

I reached for my phone with shaking hands, scrolling through my contacts until I found Dr. Vasquez's number. The phone rang three times before she answered.

"Riley? How is Lily doing?"

"She's getting worse. Her fever is spiking and she's having trouble breathing."

There was a pause on the other end. "Bring her to the emergency room immediately. I'll meet you there."

"But the photographers"

"Riley, this is about Lily's life. Nothing else matters right now."

The line went dead as I stared at the phone, my mind racing. The moment we stepped outside, the

  • The Billionaire’s Broken Contract   Chapter 124: The First Strike

Riley's POVThe call comes during Lily's breakfast, shattering our morning routine."Daddy, your phone is making angry sounds," Lily announces around a mouthful of cereal, pointing at Brett's buzzing device with her plastic spoon.Brett glances at the screen and his entire face transforms. The warmth disappears, replaced by the cold calculation I recognize from his most ruthless business dealings."Marcus. Talk to me."Even from across the kitchen island, I can hear the urgency in Marcus's voice crackling through the speaker. "They hit Meridian Corp, Blackstone Holdings, and Jensen International. All three terminated their Graham Foundation contracts this morning."My coffee mug freezes halfway to my lips. Those three contracts represented almost sixty percent of our foundation's operating budget. The numbers scroll through my head. Without that funding, we can't help even a fraction of the children we promised to serve."What reasons did they give?" Brett asks, but his tone suggests h

  • The Billionaire’s Broken Contract   Chapter 123. The War Council

Riley's POVThe Graham Foundation conference room feels like a command center at dawn. Marcus sits across from two other faces I recognize but have never been formally introduced to Brett's inner circle, the people he trusts with life-and-death decisions. My coffee has gone cold in my hands, but I don't dare reach for a fresh cup. Not when every eye in the room is studying me like I'm either their greatest asset or their most dangerous liability."Gentlemen," Brett begins, his voice carrying the authority that built empires, "we have a significant problem.""Amanda Cross has united Brett's enemies into a coordinated attack," Marcus announces without preamble. He slides photographs across the polished mahogany table like he's dealing cards. "Seven confirmed participants so far, possibly more."The older man to my right grey-haired, weathered hands, eyes that have seen too much picks up one of the photos. "The board members who walked out yesterday?""Along with former executives, compe

Riley's POVThe phone call comes at three in the morning."Riley?" Marcus's voice cuts through my sleep. "You need to see this."I slip out of bed, careful not to wake Brett. His penthouse feels different in the darkness like we're exposed somehow."What is it?" I whisper into the phone, padding to the living room."Check your email. Now." He says.My laptop screen glows as photographs load one by one. Harry leaving an upscale restaurant with three men I recognize from Brett's old board meetings. Behind them, a woman with platinum blonde hair gestures animatedly as she speaks. The sight makes my stomach clench. This isn't casual conversation it's strategy."They met tonight," Marcus explains. "Two hours after your boardroom presentation.""How many are we talking about?""Seven confirmed so far. Former Graham Industries executives, board members Brett fired, competitors who've been waiting for an opening." Marcus pauses, and I hear papers rustling. "Riley, this isn't random revenge an

  • The Billionaire’s Broken Contract   Chapter 121: The Partnership

Riley's POVThe Graham Industries boardroom feels like stepping into enemy territory. Twelve men in identical gray suits sit around a mahogany table that probably costs more than most people's cars."Gentlemen," Brett says as we enter, "I'd like you to meet Riley Plia, my strategic partner for the Graham Foundation."Strategic partner. Not a girlfriend, not a consultant. Partner. The temperature in the room drops ten degrees."Mr. Graham," says a man with silver hair and cold eyes, "we weren't expecting... additional participants in today's discussion.""Riley will be involved in all foundation decisions going forward, Harry." Brett pulls out a chair for me at the head of the table, directly across from him. "I suggest you get used to it."Harry smile is razor-thin. "Ms. Plia, isn't it? The former homeless woman?""That's right." I settle into my chair without flinching. "The former homeless woman who's about to explain why your donor contracts are a terrible idea."Shocked silence f

  • The Billionaire’s Broken Contract   Chapter 120: The Truth About Money

Riley's POV"How much of tonight was real?" I ask as we watch Victoria being loaded into a federal transport van.Brett dismisses the agents with a nod and turns to face me. "The embezzlement was real. Victoria stole forty-seven million over two years.""And the Swiss accounts?""Real, but not illegal. Standard offshore holdings for tax optimization." He runs a hand through his hair. "Everything else was theater.""Theater." The word tastes bitter. "You made me think you were facing bankruptcy to catch Victoria in a confession.""I made us both bait to end this once and for all.""Without telling me." I start walking toward his car, needing distance from the flashing lights and federal agents. "Again.""Riley" he calls out to me."No." I spin around to face him. "Do you have any idea what the last two hours did to me? Thinking the man I love was a criminal? That you'd taken out life insurance on me like I was some kind of investment?""The insurance policy is real." He said.My heart

  • The Billionaire’s Broken Contract   Chapter 119: The Secrets

Riley's POV"The Swiss accounts were supposed to be our safety net." Brett's voice is hollow as we drive through the empty streets toward Riverside Park. "Money that couldn't be touched by creditors or seized by courts.""How much money?" I asked."Fifty million. Maybe sixty."I grip the passenger door handle tighter. "Maybe?""I haven't checked the balances recently." He takes the exit toward the park where I spent those desperate months living in my car. "I was afraid of what I'd find.""Afraid of what you'd find in accounts you control?" I asked, almost shouting.Brett pulls into the same parking spot where he first offered me his contract eight months ago. The irony isn't lost on either of us."The accounts weren't exactly... legal."My stomach drops. "What does that mean?""It means Victoria has enough evidence to destroy me even if the financial leverage doesn't work.""Jesus, Brett." I turn to face him fully. "What else haven't you told me?"Before he can answer, headlights swe
