A Visit In Jail
Davidson Group Of Companies (DGOC)9 a.m, the next day.
RAYMOND'S POV
I had just left the board members meeting, scrolling through the news feed of the internet as I headed back to my office when the thoughts of her crossed my mind. She still hasn't been found and it's been three long years, my betrothed fiance ran away from home the night before our wedding.
According to rumors, she had an accident while on the run but her dead body was never found. I wasn't too sure that she was dead so I sent out my men to search for her, leaving no stone unturned while in the act. I didn't want her demise to be without a befitting burial.
I wanted to honor her due to my family's relationship with hers. Her grandfather was a good man and the only person who valued me despite being the illegitimate son to the Davidson family.
My father never saw me as his son, but Mr Andres did. We weren't blood related, but I was surely his favorite amongst my father's sons. They were just family friends but he somehow liked me. During holidays I would visit him and he'd let me hangout with his granddaughter who is supposed to be married to me. Unfortunately, she never loved me and tried to elope with her lover…
I never resented her despite what she did. I wasn't in love with her, I only wanted to fulfill Mr Andre's last wish, at least to make his soul happy…
I've just arrived inside my office and I removed my coat, placing it on the stand while I took my seat on my chair facing the MacBook on my desk.
Just as I switched it on to resume working on the files I'd left unfinished before the meeting, a call came on my mobile phone.. I picked it up immediately, it was Jamie, my assistant..
“Hello…” my voice came out calm and reserved. My eyes were fixed to my laptop screen as I spoke.
“Boss, Miss Vera Andres is alive. We just found her whereabouts” he announced..
“What!” I jerked up from my seat , banging my fist hard on my desk as I was surprised by this information.
“She’s alive? Where is she?” I asked, it was unbelievable to me.
“She was arrested yesterday in another city, sir. I'm currently investigating the case” he replied.
“Where are you now? Get the car ready to go there..” I declared and ended the phone call.
*******************
My first night in the cell was a horrible experience. I wouldn't wish for my enemy to send a day in here. The food was terrible, everyone in there looked terrifying.
"Ms. Coleman, you have a visitor." The warden officer announced to me and the gates were unlocked for me to go out. I breathed deeply, the fresh air outside a prison cell.
Francis had come as promised. My eyes were reddened from crying so much last night, my head was banging too. I couldn't wait to see him and express how disappointed I was in him. Last night was supposed to be our anniversary but I spent it in jail..
"How could you do this to me Francis?”
I shouted at him in disbelief.. I never thought that he could do such a thing to me ever in my entire life. I've made so many sacrifices for Francis to treat me this way..
"For better or worse Vera. Besides, you'll be out in a month or less” he responded nonchalantly, without any trace of emotion in his voice. I knew his love towards me was sinking but I did not expect him to be this extreme.
"What would you be doing if I got locked up for a year?" I asked him, I was still in shock… his words seemed so stern, as if he'd put me here on purpose.
I was still trying to say something when he brought out a document and slammed it on the table.
"Sign the documents Vera . In case you'll be here for a year, I want to be able to do something meaningful with my life." He stated.
I looked at the documents, hoping that it wasn't what I was thinking..
I slowly brought out the paper contents and I read it out loudly..
“D.. Divorce papers” my voice stuttered in fear…
"You imbecile. I hate you. You wasted three years of my life." I yelled out loudly, throwing the papers at him.
"You have no life, Vera. I should've just let you die after your accident. There wasn't a better hope for your future if I hadn't stepped in." Francis stated…
His words slapped me hard on the face. I left my family and married him because of love and this was what he had to say to me? I escaped my own wedding to get married to him. How could he say this to me?
His words stunned me and I felt stabbed right in my heart but I had to endure… I wasn't going to show any form of weakness in front of him.
“Francis, how dare you?” I raised my hand to slap him… I couldn't think of other ways to react to how angry I was at him..
Francis grabbed my hand and pushed it back. “Guards” he called out loudly and two prison guards matched into the visit room immediately.
They came and grabbed me, forcing me away…
“Francis, how could you?”
"As for your wasted three years, I'm compensating you with a million dollars. All you have to do is sign this and the money will be paid to you after your release” he explained..
I was hurt deeply, the pain I felt in my heart was the same as being cut by a knife.. the wound was deep, Francis had crossed the line…
I signed the divorce papers…
“I do not want your money” I said, and stood my ground. I was still in the custody of the guards so I couldn't hit him.
“That's fine. You can do whatever you wish, you lunatic.” Francis curses at me.
"I do not want to see your face ever again." I declared.
"Neither do I wish to visit a prison cell again."
I watched him storm off and More tears cascaded down my eyes. My heart was crushed to pieces. When I returned to my cell my tears had dried off. I remained on my bed sobbing.
I wished I never eloped and got married to him, I wish I never did. This wouldn't have happened to me if only I listened to my grandpa and married the man he had chosen for me.
There was no way I could contact him, Grandpa died a year ago and I couldn't bring myself to go to send him off as I have disobeyed him because of my love for Francis..
Later in the evening, After another terrible food, we moved in a single line returning back to our cells.
I was inside my cell, laying on my bed with my eyes gazing at the ceiling. My mind was too occupied by different thoughts, I didn't even hear my name being called out…
"Vera.”
A cellmate tapped my shoulder in order to get my attention.
“Aren't you Vera? You're being called by the guard” she pointed out, I raised my gaze and I signified my identity to him.
The sounds of padlocks clicking outside was brief, the guard walked into the cell and he uncuffed me before escorting me outside the cell. I couldn't think properly, what was going on? I asked myself inwardly. Was this another kind of trick by Francis?
I looked at the guard confusedly, my legs were too stiff to walk.. I was wondering why he'd release me all of a sudden.
“Follow me” she said,
We reached the locker room and new clothings were given to me. I changed up without asking questions. The same security walked me out of the premises of the cell. I was allowed to walk by myself, no one ordered me or rough handled me to move like they did back then.
Beep..
The electronic gate closed behind me. Tears I had been withholding escaped my eyes. Was this a prank? My foot was too weak to take a step. What if I moved and someone put a bullet in my head?
The weather is freezing. I stood out there shaking but still not moving until a blinding headlight from an incoming vehicle packed right in front of me.
The car opened and a man walked out of the car heading towards me. His face was cold, yet handsome, his aura oozed of wealth and power. He looked familiar, who was he? I asked myself rhetorically as I maintained a gaze at him for as long as I could before my whole world turned dark and I passed out right there.
The Runaway BrideRAYMONDI stared at her with so much curiosity filling my mind. Why did she run away from getting married to me back then? Did she find me unworthy of her? Was that why she ran in the first place? Maybe she didn't like my status as an illegitimate heir of my family..It wasn't also my choice to get married to her, but I wanted to fulfill a dying wish.I continued to watch her sleep as different questions filled my mind. Vera used to be a very beautiful woman, I've seen her once before, her skin was as fair as snow and her hair was soft as silk and shiny. What has happened to her? She looked so pale, worked out and old. What did Francis Coleman do to my betrothed?.I clenched my fists hard, thinking about all the time she spent together with him..I did my findings about him, he was not a good man. Francis Coleman was involved in cyber fraud and other illegal business activities. How could Vera fall in love and elope with a man as cocky as him?Her face seemed so small
To Avenge You VERAI headed outside the huge empty villa and no one stopped me. Obviously, the owner lived alone and didn't have any working staff around this place.Even the gates were automatic and it opened right when I appeared in front and closed right after. I walked away without looking back or waiting to say thank you to the man who got me out of jail.Reaching the busy streets, I recalled that I didn't have any money on me to board a taxi to my location. I frowned, looking at where Francis put me. Being unable to cater for my own bills. The future heiress to the Andres family fortune.I walked down the busy cold street and I counted the moments until the road went dark and the crickets started to cry. It was already nighttime and I hadn't even half the way to the graveyard yet. Or, I didn't even know the way there from here.I continued to walk until I started to feel exhausted and drained, although my mind was starting to clear off the fact that I was an ex-convict. The man
VERA'S POV"I will drop you off at home and then later on we can start making preparations for our wedding." He said again, casually like he already had everything planned out without my knowledge."And what makes you think I want to marry you?! " I yelled. " I mean you should be angry at me for running off before our wedding, why do you want me back?!" I questioned, unable to hide the curiosity in my tone."Hmm... Aveera." He sighed. "I'll take you home, take a shower, have a good long nap, after you've rested, we can finally have a chi-chat. I don't think you're in the best state of mind to have any conversation with me now especially not that one."The car drove along the same path and after a moment, it came to a halt. Raymond dropped me off in front of my home. As I got out of the car, I was greeted with the cold air. I held myself, in a fit to keep myself warm, still standing by the car, Raymond said to me through the window, "I will call you Aveera." And then I want he'd as the
VERA'S POV"Welcome madam, I trust you're having a good day."" Clearly I'm not herald. We were supposed to meet this evening not now, but I had to shift the appointment. Sorry if I caused any inconveniences." I said to him." Its alright ma'am... How may I help you though?" Harald adjusted his glasses." Has my stepsister Diane come here ever since. ... Ever since I was arrested?"" Err.. well, not she hasn't... I was surprised when i saw you calling my phone, I haven't heard from neither of you in a really long time." " Okay... That's good... Actually I was arrested, been stuck in prison for a little while now... I just got out yesterday. I wanted to talk to you about my father's fortune."" Mmm... I guessed that was why you called. I got a copy of the will... But then Miss, your father had some stipulations." Harold said""What stipulations Harold? After all, I am the eldest daughter." " It has nothing to do with that, unfortunately." Harold said wearing a worried look on his fa
VERA'S POV.I stood at the balcony and let th wind blow through my hair and face as I thought about what next step to take. I've truly embarrassed myself and disrespected Raymond a d all he did was help me.I began to consider, if maybe I should go back... After all I would be doing him a favour. At this point, I wasn't sure of what to do. I was desperate, I really needed cash, I needed a job I needed a source of livelihood and the only way. I could get that was by inheriting my father's company and running it. I had no other choice that to beat Diane to this game. If anything goes wrong, my life would definitely be ruined and she wouldn't even give me a chance if she gets the upper hand.I pulled out my phone and tapped on Raymond's number, at this point he was the only one who could help me and I didn't seem to have any other options. I stared at it number boldly written on my screen. My fingers nervously vibrated as I was unsure if this was the right thing to do.Would Raymond even
Vera pov."Then let's make preparations then." He said to me with a straight face, once again taking a puff of his smoke."Perfect! I punched my fists in the air to celebrate but that I gathered myself together and sat upright.I watched him dial on his phone and then place his phone to his ears as I looked around the room and admired the space."Hello? Justice Marcus?"The sound of his voice drew my attention back. "Yes, I would like you to prepare the marriage documents for signing between me and the woman I spoke to you about, Vera Andreas." He said my name and stole a glare at me sending shivers down my spine."Very well then." He hung up the phone and turned to me... I will call for some wedding planners to plan the actual weeding, I want to make it grand, for the sake of my reputation. But before that... I want to make this known to you that it is just a contract marriage, my lawyer Marcus, will prepare the contract, embedded on it will be all the terms and conditions following
Chapter 9VERA'S POV."Where are you?" Diane asked through the speakers." That's non of your business Diane. In fact why are you calling my number?" I fumed. " I slept in jail and you never called neither did you come to see me, so what do you want from me now?"" Oh please! Relax Vera. You're always overreacting. You were silly and that was how you ended up in jail it's nobody's fault asides yourself."" What do you want Diane?""What do I want?! What can I get from someone as useless as you vera? I mean what do you have that I would want? Oh wait! You have nothing!" She scoffed and then laughed aloud. She then continued," Anyways, I just wanted to confirm if the rumors were true... After so many years of your life, you're finally trending on social media unfortunately it's fir the wrong reason Ha! You're really such a looser." She scoffed." Diane! What js wrong with you? Is this why you called my number?! I just knew I should'nt have taken your call."" Well, wherever you are, yo
FRANCISCO'S POV"What do you want, Sheldon?" "Sir, I think the rumors are true." Came Sheldon's voice in a whisper. " What do you mean by that?" I questioned in disbelief as I pulled the documents in front of me in order to pay close attention to the message Sheldon was trying to send."" Sir, she came here today, in fact she's in side the lawyer's office."" Unbelievable!" I whispered to myself. "How?! What did she come to do?! Why is she there?"" Sir, I'm uncertain--"" You idiot! Better find out why she's there and give me feedback." I interrupted him and hung up the phone immediately. "No, no no! This can't be possible." I whispered to myself. I got up from my desk and headed to the shelf at the corner of my office, in search of the documents that confirmed that Vera will rest in jail for a couple more years. "Why is she back so soon?! How?!" I questioned my competence as I ransacked the folders. Finally I found it, my eyes were proving me right but the phone call from Sheldon
Vera's POVThe first thing I heard was the continuous beep of a machine. My eyes fluttered open slowly, the white ceiling above making me sqùint. I blinked again, my vision adjusting to the brightness around me. I felt cold air touching my cheeks, the light smell of antiseptic in the air.I was so confused, trying to remember where I was and how I got here. Then it hit me. The white walls, the machine, the faint smell of antiseptic, I was in the hospital. But why?Just then, a rush of my memories came back. I had been with Reymond at home, eating, talking, laughing and just enjoying a meal as a married couple when I felt the weakness in my hands, then my chest had gotten tight, my vision became blurry and I couldn't feel my hands again. Then darkness. The last thing I saw was Reymond's panicked face.Speaking of–My eyes drifted to my side, and there he was.Reymond.Asleep in the chair beside my bed, his head laying backwards on the chair. He looked tired and exhausted. He was in hi
Diana's POVI stood frozen, the chill of the evening breeze enveloping around me like a cool blanket. There she was, my mother standing at my doorstep with tears in her eyes. She held her purse to her chest like she had a huge sum of money in it and was trying to protect it at all cost.I wanted to tease her or laugh but this wasn't a laughing matter. She would only cry more."Diana," she said, almost in a whisper. "Why haven’t you been answering my calls? I was worried."I rolled my eyes. I'm not in the mood for this at all. "If you came here to scold me or tell me how disappointed you are, don’t bother. I already know."Her face fell. Her eyes were full of emotion as she stepped closer. "No, baby, no. That’s not why I’m here. I just… I needed to see you. I needed to be sure you were okay. I'm your mother after all." Her voice cracked, She was shivering too, and just like that, my walls crumbled. I couldn't leave her like that. I opened the door wider and stepped aside. "Come in."S
Vera's POVI stood in front of the glass-paneled building Reymond had dropped me off at. It had several floors above, the morning light reflecting off the sleek tall glass building. I took a moment to take a deep breath. I was so excited and nervous at the same time.I pushed the glass door open and entered the building. The place was really beautiful and elegant. It had cream marble floors, a long desk sat at the far end with a woman seated behind it, typing on a sleek keyboard. Then on the other side was a door leading to the other sides, I guess.Framed photos of models in different, unique poses covers lined the walls. Places they also featured in magazines, shows and events were also lined up in picture frames on the wall.At the other side were chairs, a long roll of chairs for people to sit down. From the look of things, the woman sitting there was the receptionist given she was the only person I saw so I approached her.“Good morning,” I said as I got to the desk. The recept
Vera's POVAnna's eyes sparkled the moment I told her I was pregnant. Her face lit up, and she reached across the table to hold my hand. She couldn't stop smiling and her smile put me in a very happy mood. She was basically more happy than I and Reymond combined, the parents of the child. It felt so good to have her back "Vera! That's amazing news! Oh my God, congratulations!" she said, grinning from ear to ear.I laughed softly, feeling warmth spread across my chest. "Thanks. I haven't told a people yet, but I just... I wanted you to know.""I'm so honored! This is big, girl! And Reymond? He must be over the moon!"“Yes, we both are.”Anna squeezed my hand again. "I'm happy for you. You deserve this happiness. After everything you've been through.""Thank you," I said quietly, smiling at her.“I'm sure it's going to be a pretty baby girl just like You.”Woah. I had not even thought about that“Let's not go that far, Anna.”“Okayy.” We laughed. Dinner continued after, with laughter
Diana's POVThe walls of my apartment felt like they were closing in, I saw curled up on the couch, a half empty glass of wine in my hand. I have been consuming a lot of wine lately and I couldn't care less, it calmed me down. My phone lay face up on the table, still and silent. I had called Francis five times now and he was still ignoring my calls. Each ring that ended in voicemail felt like a knife being twisted deep into my chest. I tossed the phone aside and sighed. He was a coward, I couldn't care less if he picked my call or not.“Bastard,” I hissed. “Spineless, weak coward.”All this because of that silly video. I had counted on Francis to handle Vera, to bury her and everything she stood for. Instead, he left me so alone and was angry, how stupid of him. And Reymond? I am going to get you back for what he did.We made a promise. He had sworn that no matter how bad things got, he won't expose me. That video was supposed to be between us and now he uploaded it and ruined my repu
Vera's POVThe internet had a way of making things feel unreal until they weren’t. For the past few weeks, I’d carried a huge weight I couldn't name, one that pressed against my chest every time I opened my phone and saw that message of losing my modelling contract. But now… the silence is gone.It was replaced by something else—relief. Real, honest relief.Reymond had posted the video. And just like that, the truth was out.People had seen the part where I had defended myself against Diana. The damage to Diana’s lie was slow and sharp. And best of all, my name was finally cleared.I sat at the edge of the bed, my phone in my hand. Notifications kept pouring in, but I ignored them for now. All I could do was sit there and breathe.Reymond came into the room, towel in hand, drying his face. “You saw it?”I looked up at him, smiled, and nodded. “Yes. I did. Thank you.”He crossed over to me and knelt down, resting his head on my thighs. “Don’t thank me. You didn’t deserve any of what Di
Reymond's POVI left Francis’ place after I sent him the video. Every second I spent watching the video again while he sat there in stunned silence only made my blood boil more. I had to grip the steering wheel tighter on my way back home, trying to stop the heat rising in my throat.Diana had crossed every line. And Francis, I couldn’t even begin to understand how he sat with that kind of guilt. He looked like a man who had watched the ground disappear beneath his feet. Good. He should feel it.When I walked into the house, I found Vera curled up on the couch, a blanket wrapped around her like a baby. She looked up, her eyes red but clear. Not crying anymore. Just waiting.I dropped the keys on the table and walked straight to her."You don’t have to worry," I said, bending down in front of her. "I’m going to get you that contract back."She blinked, confusion flashing across her face. "Rey, it’s gone. They terminated it. Francis made sure of that.""Francis is also the one who’s goi
Reymond’s POV“Is this the kind of image we want representing the Andreas family brand?”I stared at it, anger rushing to my head.No. Not because she looked bad but she looked incredible and sexy. But because the board would never understand. They saw scandal in everything.I didn’t call her. I couldn’t. Not with the way we left things. I will talk to her when I get home. When I got home, she was in the bedroom, standing near the mirror, brushing her hair. Peaceful. Cold.“Vera,” I said. She didn’t answer.I stepped in. “What’s the meaning of those images?”She didn’t even blink. “Not now, Reymond. I’m tired.”“This isn’t just about you,” I snapped. “A board member reached out. You’re the CEO’s wife. You can’t be doing this kind of modeling.”She turned. “There it is. The control. The ego. Trying to turn me into what you want.”“I’m trying to protect you.”“No, you’re trying to silence me. Again.”I pulled out my phone and showed her the text. She barely glanced at it. “I just need y
Diana's POVThat stupid person that ordered me hadn't sent me a message yet. I kept replaying everything in my head. From Reymond showing me evidence of me and then that text message. The message came in at 11:47 a.m."Meet me at the Glass Orchid restaurant. 12:00 p.m. Don’t be late. Come alone."No name. No details. Just instructions, like someone had the right to order me around.I stared at the text for a minute before throwing my phone on the bed. The audacity. After what Reymond did in our last meeting, I wasn’t in the mood for unknown text orders. But curiosity got the better of me. That, and wanting to destroy Vera were the only things I derived joy from. After that, I got a call from my mother.I didn't say anything when I picked the call, I waited for her to talk.“Hello, Diana. How are You?”“I'm fine, mum. Why are you calling me?” I said, sounding uninterested. “You're my daughter. I'm just checking up on you.” “Last I remembered, you didn't support me so except you want
