LOGINElena stood frozen in the middle of the room.
Catherine was gone.
One moment she had been standing beside them, and the next, she had vanished without leaving a trace.
Adrian searched the hallway while Lydia checked the other rooms.
“Nothing,” Adrian announced when he returned. “The back entrance is open.”
Elena shook her head.
“She knew something was going to happen.”
“Or someone warned her,” Lydia replied.
Elena turned towards her.
“Do you think Catherine betrayed us?”
Lydia hesitated.
“I don't know. But Daniel specifically warned you about the person helping us find the truth.”
Adrian placed his phone on the table.
“We need to stop assuming everyone who gives us information is on our side.”
Elena looked at him.
“Catherine helped us find Amelia. She showed us the original agreement. She helped us understand Jonathan's inheritance.”
“And she may have known exactly where every discovery would lead us,” Adrian replied.
Before Elena could answer, Lily entered the sitting room.
“Mum, are we leaving again?”
Elena immediately softened her expression.
“Not yet, sweetheart.”
“Why does everyone keep disappearing?”
The question silenced the adults.
Elena knelt beside her daughter.
“Sometimes grown-ups make decisions without explaining them properly. But I promise you, we're going to find out what's happening.”
Lily nodded and returned to the bedroom.
Adrian watched her leave.
“We need somewhere safer.”
---
An hour later, they were in a private apartment Adrian owned outside the city.
Lydia had finally fallen asleep on the sofa, exhausted from the previous night's events.
Elena stood near the balcony, looking at the lights below.
Adrian approached her.
“You should rest.”
“I can't.”
“Daniel is alive. We'll find him.”
Elena turned around.
“You keep saying that, but we don't know where he is.”
“We'll get answers.”
She looked away.
“Do you know what hurts the most? I spent my whole life believing my family was ordinary. My father worked hard, my mother loved us, and our problems were just like everyone else's.”
Adrian remained quiet.
“Now I discover that my name is connected to an inheritance, my father has been hiding secrets, and my mother may know more than she has ever admitted.”
He moved closer.
“You didn't choose any of this.”
“But Lily is involved now.”
Adrian's expression became serious.
“Then protecting her comes before everything else.”
---
The following morning, Lydia discovered a missed call on her phone.
It was from an unknown number.
She played the voicemail.
A woman's voice filled the room.
“Lydia, if you are hearing this, then Catherine has already left. Don't trust the documents she gave you. The original agreement is not complete.”
Lydia immediately called Elena and Adrian.
“Someone left a message.”
Adrian listened carefully.
“Can you identify the voice?”
Lydia shook her head.
“No. But she mentioned the original agreement.”
Elena took the phone.
“Play it again.”
The message continued.
“There were three signatures on the agreement, but four people made the decision. The fourth person never signed because she was already carrying the child they wanted to protect.”
The recording ended.
Elena looked confused.
“Who was carrying the child?”
Lydia replayed the message.
Then Adrian noticed something.
“Listen to the background.”
A faint bell sounded behind the woman's voice.
He recognised it.
“The old chapel.”
Elena looked at him.
“You think the woman is there?”
“It's the only place we've heard that particular bell.”
They decided to investigate.
---
The chapel stood at the edge of the old Blackwood estate. Its doors were weathered, and the garden had become overgrown.
Adrian opened the entrance.
Inside, everything was quiet.
Elena noticed a small envelope resting on the front pew.
Her name was written across it.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph of Margaret Bennett holding a newborn baby.
Elena stared at the image.
“That isn't me.”
Adrian examined the photograph.
“Are you sure?”
“I've seen the pictures my parents kept from when I was born. This baby is different.”
Lydia turned the photograph over.
A handwritten message appeared on the back.
THE CHILD WAS GIVEN A NAME THAT DID NOT BELONG TO HER.
Elena's hands began to tremble.
“Is this about me?”
Before anyone could answer, a door at the back of the chapel opened.
An elderly caretaker stepped into the room.
“You shouldn't have come here.”
Adrian moved in front of Elena.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at the photograph in her hand.
“I knew Jonathan Vale.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Then tell me what happened to him.”
The caretaker lowered his eyes.
“Jonathan didn't disappear because he wanted to leave his family. He disappeared because someone close to him betrayed him.”
“Who?”
The man hesitated.
“Daniel Bennett.”
Elena immediately shook her head.
“No. My father protected Jonathan.”
“Perhaps he did. But protection and betrayal can sometimes look the same when you don't know the whole story.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Where is Jonathan now?”
The caretaker looked towards the chapel entrance.
“Before I answer that, you must understand why the original agreement was created.”
He reached into his coat and removed a small key.
“Jonathan left something beneath this chapel. Something Catherine has been searching for.”
Elena took the key.
“What is it?”
“The truth about the child Margaret gave away.”
Elena's heart raced.
“My mother gave away a child?”
The caretaker nodded.
“And that child was the reason Jonathan disappeared.”
Suddenly, a vehicle stopped outside.
The caretaker looked frightened.
“They've found you.”
Adrian moved towards the door.
“Who?”
The caretaker grabbed Elena's arm.
“Don't let Catherine reach that archive before you do.”
A loud knock interrupted him.
Then a familiar voice came from outside.
“Elena, open the door.”
It was Catherine.
But the caretaker's face turned pale.
He whispered:
“That's not the Catherine you should be afraid of.”
The chapel lights went out.
And someone began unlocking the door from the other side.
Nobody moved. The stranger stood near the staircase, looking at Adrian with an expression that was almost amused.Adrian stepped in front of Elena and Lily.“Stay where you are.”The man raised his hands slightly.“Still giving orders. Some things never change.”“Who are you?”The stranger smiled.“You heard Charles. My name is Daniel Alexander Rose.”Adrian's jaw tightened.“Charles also said you were raised as my brother.”“That's right.”“I've never seen you before.”“Because you weren't supposed to.”Elena glanced at Lily, then toward Margaret.“Take Lily upstairs.”Margaret immediately stood.“But Mummy—”“Please, sweetheart. Go with Margaret.”Lily reluctantly followed her. When they were gone, Elena turned back to the stranger.“Why are you here?”Daniel looked at her.“Because you finally discovered that your family has been lying to you.”“That's not an answer.”He nodded toward the photograph in Adrian's hand.“Look at the boy standing beside you.”Adrian examined it again.
Elena read the message again.THIRD CHILD — LOCATION CONFIRMED.THE CHILD IS LIVING UNDER YOUR ROOF.Her fingers tightened around the phone.“That's impossible.”Adrian took the phone from her and examined the address. It was the house where Lily had spent her earliest years, before the family moved into the Blackwood estate.“Someone is trying to frighten us,” he said.Samuel Hayes shook his head.“No. That address is important.”Elena turned toward him.“Why?”Samuel looked uncomfortable.“Because your parents hid something there.”“What?”“Your brother's original birth record.”Michael stepped closer.“You mean Jonathan?”Samuel nodded.“Not Jonathan. The third child.”Eleanor's face changed.“Samuel, you promised me that child's identity would remain protected.”“And I kept that promise,” he replied. “But someone has found the record.”Elena looked between them.“Who is this child?”Nobody answered.Alexander gave a quiet laugh.“You're all wasting time.”Adrian turned toward him.
Elena stared at the two signatures.Eleanor Rose Hayes.Samuel Rose. The name Samuel had appeared too many times in her family's history. But this time, something was different.“Who was he?” she asked.Nobody answered.Alexander stood beside the desk, watching their reactions.Elena turned toward him.“You know who my father is.”Alexander smiled.“I know who signed your original birth record.”“Then tell me.”“Not yet.”Adrian stepped forward.“Stop playing games.”Alexander looked at him.“You should be more concerned about your own family.”“My family is standing right here.”“Is it?”Alexander pointed toward the document.“The Samuel Rose who signed Elena's birth record was not your biological father.”Adrian's expression hardened.“I know that.”“But you don't know why his name was used.”Michael picked up the document.“Samuel Rose was a common name in the original family records. There were two men with that name.”Eleanor nodded.“Brothers.”Elena frowned.“Brothers?”“Yes,”
Elena stared at the woman standing across the room. Her face was almost identical to Amelia's.The same eyes. The same smile.Even the same small mark beneath her left eyebrow. But the woman's words had changed everything.“Amelia isn't my biological mother?” Elena repeated. The woman nodded.“That's correct.”Amelia stepped forward.“Who are you?”The stranger looked at her.“Your older sister.”Amelia shook her head.“No. My mother had only one daughter before me.”“She was told that.”Robert moved toward the woman.“Eleanor?”The woman smiled.“So you remember me.”Robert looked shaken.“I thought you had disappeared.”“I did. Because you helped them erase my identity.”Elena turned toward him.“You know her?”Robert nodded reluctantly.“Her name is Eleanor Rose Hayes.”Michael's face went pale.“Eleanor Hayes?”The woman looked at him.“Yes, Michael. Your family has been searching for me without knowing it.”Michael approached her.“Are you saying you're my aunt?”“I'm your mother
Elena stared at the message on her phone.COME TO THE ORIGINAL VAULT. ALONE.She read the second message again.YOUR MOTHER'S REAL BIRTH RECORD IS WAITING.Then she looked at Amelia.“There's something you haven't told me.”Amelia wiped her tears.“I know.”“Who were you before you became Amelia Rose Vale?”Amelia looked toward Michael. He lowered his head.Elena's heart tightened.“You both know something.”Michael finally spoke.“Your mother was not born with the name Amelia.”Elena stared at him.“What?”Amelia sat down.“My birth name was Eleanor Catherine Rose.”Evelyn immediately looked up.“Amelia…”“No, Mother. I'm done hiding.”Amelia turned toward Elena.“I was adopted into the Vale family when I was very young. My biological parents disappeared, and I was raised believing the Rose family had died.”Elena frowned.“Then why did you become Amelia?”“Because the woman who adopted me wanted me to have a different identity.”“Who?”Amelia looked at Robert. He said nothing.Elena
Elena stared at the woman standing beside the door. Her twin. The person who had shared her childhood secrets, protected her from Alexander and stood beside her through every revelation.“What do you mean?” Elena asked. Her twin held the silver bracelet tightly.“I mean that the name you've known me by isn't the name I was born with.”Amelia stepped forward.“Don't do this.”The woman looked at her.“You've hidden the truth long enough.”Elena turned toward her mother.“What truth?”Amelia's eyes filled with tears. Her twin placed the bracelet on the table.“Alexander wasn't lying about everything. The second child Isabella lost wasn't Clara.”Adrian frowned.“Then who was it?”She looked directly at him.“Me.”Silence filled the room.Isabella slowly stood.“No.”The woman nodded.“I was the baby taken from you.”Isabella covered her mouth.Adrian looked between them.“Are you saying you're my mother's daughter?”“Yes.”Elena stepped backward.“But you and I were born to Amelia.
