LOGINAdrian couldn't take his eyes off the photograph.
His father stood beside Alexander Blackwood, looking no older than five. The woman holding his hand was the same mysterious woman from Jonathan's photographs.
Richard.
The man who had raised Adrian.
The man who had disappeared.
The man who might have been the third heir all along.
“Explain this,” Adrian demanded.
Victoria sat down slowly.
“Richard was never Alexander's biological son.”
Adrian frowned.
“I know he was adopted.”
“No. You were told he was adopted because Alexander wanted everyone to believe Richard had no legitimate connection to the original inheritance.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Richard was Jonathan's son.”
The room fell silent.
Elena looked at the photograph again.
“Another son?”
Victoria nodded.
“Jonathan had three children whose identities were deliberately hidden. Samuel was the eldest. Elena and Lydia were his daughters. Richard was the youngest.”
Adrian stared at his mother.
“Then why did Jonathan leave Richard with Alexander?”
“Because Richard was the child Alexander wanted most.”
“Why?”
Victoria hesitated.
“Because Richard was the only child Jonathan believed could inherit the Blackwood name without destroying the agreement.”
Adrian looked confused.
“But Samuel is older.”
“Samuel was never meant to lead the Blackwood family. Jonathan wanted him to expose the truth. Elena was meant to reveal what happened to the family. Richard was supposed to decide whether the empire should continue.”
Elena slowly understood.
“The third heir.”
Victoria nodded.
“Richard.”
---
Adrian walked towards the window.
His entire life had suddenly become unfamiliar.
He remembered Richard teaching him how to ride a bicycle, attending his school events and telling him that the Blackwood name came with responsibilities.
Had those moments been genuine?
Or had his father simply been preparing him for a future built on lies?
“Did Father know?” Adrian asked.
Victoria looked at him.
“Richard knew his identity. He also knew Alexander had manipulated the family records.”
“Then why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he believed that once you discovered the truth, Alexander would use you against him.”
Adrian turned sharply.
“I'm his son. He should have trusted me.”
“He was afraid of losing you.”
Elena approached Adrian.
“Your father may have made mistakes, but that doesn't mean everything he did was a lie.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I don't know what to believe anymore.”
Before anyone could respond, Lydia entered holding her phone.
“I found something.”
She placed it on the table.
It was an old scanned document from the Vale family archive.
The heading read:
THE ORIGINAL DECLARATION OF THE THREE HEIRS.
Beneath it were three names.
Samuel Vale.
Elena Rose Vale.
Richard Blackwood.
Lydia pointed at the final paragraph.
“Look at this.”
Adrian read aloud.
The third heir shall carry the final authority. However, that authority shall remain dormant until the first and second heirs willingly reveal the truth and restore the stolen family records.
Elena looked at Victoria.
“So Richard cannot claim anything until Adrian and I complete our responsibilities?”
“Correct.”
“Then why is Alexander hiding him?”
Victoria's expression darkened.
“Because Alexander knows that if Richard accepts his identity, the Blackwood empire could legally pass out of his control.”
---
Meanwhile, in an abandoned office building, Richard stood beside Samuel.
A map of the Blackwood estate lay across the table.
Samuel pointed towards a marked location.
“The original record is beneath the mansion.”
Richard shook his head.
“No. Alexander moved it years ago.”
“Where?”
Richard hesitated.
“Victoria knows.”
Samuel gave a frustrated sigh.
“Then we need to get to her before Alexander does.”
Richard looked at him.
“Have you contacted Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“You shouldn't have.”
Samuel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Alexander has people watching him. If Adrian follows the message, he'll lead them straight to us.”
Samuel folded the map.
“Your son deserves to know who he is.”
Richard's expression softened.
“I know. That's why I've spent years trying to keep him away from this.”
Samuel looked at him carefully.
“There's something you haven't told him, isn't there?”
Richard said nothing.
Samuel continued.
“Does Adrian know why Jonathan chose him to inherit the Blackwood name?”
Richard looked towards the window.
“He doesn't know the most important part.”
---
Back at the estate, Adrian's phone rang.
This time, the caller ID displayed a familiar name.
FATHER.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
Richard's voice came through.
“Somewhere safe.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I wanted to.”
“You had years!”
“I know.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Are you Jonathan's son?”
A long silence followed.
“Yes.”
Adrian struggled to respond.
“Why did you let me believe Alexander was your father?”
“Because Alexander wanted to control everyone connected to Jonathan. He believed that if he raised me as his own, he could prevent me from discovering the truth.”
“And what about me?”
Richard's voice softened.
“You were never part of his plan, Adrian. But you became the person I wanted to protect most.”
Adrian looked away.
“Where is Samuel?”
“With me.”
“Are you coming back?”
“Not yet. There's something you must find first.”
“What?”
“The original Blackwood family register. It's hidden in the room behind your grandfather's study.”
Adrian frowned.
“Why didn't you tell me before?”
“Because I wasn't certain Alexander had removed the final page.”
Richard paused.
“When you find it, don't let Victoria touch it.”
The call suddenly disconnected.
Adrian lowered his phone.
Elena approached him.
“What happened?”
“He wants us to find something in Alexander's study.”
Victoria immediately stood.
“No. You cannot go there.”
Adrian turned towards her.
“Why?”
“Because the original register contains something that could change everything.”
“What?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Your grandfather's real reason for keeping Richard close.”
---
An hour later, Adrian and Elena entered Alexander's old study.
Dust covered the furniture, but the desk remained untouched.
Adrian searched the drawers while Elena examined the bookshelves.
Behind a row of old family records, she discovered a small metal compartment.
“Adrian.”
He joined her.
The compartment contained a sealed envelope and a handwritten note.
Adrian opened the envelope.
Inside was a family register.
The first page contained Jonathan's name.
The second contained Amelia's.
The third contained Richard's.
But the final page carried a name neither of them expected.
ADRIAN ALEXANDER BLACKWOOD.
Beneath it was a handwritten statement:
Adrian was not born to inherit the Blackwood empire. He was born to protect the third heir.
Elena stared at the sentence.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian slowly turned the page.
A final message had been written in Alexander's handwriting.
THE BOY YOU RAISED WAS NEVER THE ONE YOU WERE MEANT TO PROTECT.
Adrian stepped backwards.
Then the study door slammed shut.
A familiar voice came through the speakers.
“Congratulations, Adrian.”
Alexander Blackwood.
“You have finally discovered your father's identity.”
Adrian looked towards the ceiling.
“What do you want?”
Alexander's response was chillingly calm.
“I want you to understand that Richard was never the most important child Jonathan left behind.”
A pause followed.
“Because the real third heir is someone you have loved and protected your entire life.”
Elena grabbed Adrian's hand.
Before either could speak, another message appeared on the computer screen.
THE THIRD HEIR IS NOT RICHARD.
IT IS THE CHILD RICHARD WAS ORDERED TO HIDE.
And beneath those words was a name.
LILY ROSE BENNETT.
Adrian stared at the message.DON'T TRUST DANIEL. HE KNOWS WHO THE CHILD IS BECAUSE HE HELPED HIDE HIM.Daniel watched him.“What's wrong?”Adrian turned the phone around.“Richard says you helped hide the fourth child.”Daniel's expression barely changed.“Richard doesn't know what he's talking about.”“Then why is he warning me about you?”“Because he wants to turn you against me.”Elena stepped forward.“Enough. We need the truth, not another argument.”Daniel looked at her.“I've spent years protecting you.”“By lying to me?”“By keeping you alive.”The words silenced her.Margaret moved closer to Daniel.“You knew Isabella?”Daniel nodded.“She was my wife's sister.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”“Because Isabella made me promise never to reveal what happened to her child.”Margaret's eyes filled.“You let me believe she disappeared without explanation.”“She had to.”“Why?”Daniel opened his mouth, but Adrian's phone rang again.Richard.This time Adrian answered and put the ca
Margaret stared at Evelyn.“That's not true.”Evelyn didn't look away.“You know exactly who I'm talking about.”“No, I don't.”“Margaret, please. We've hidden enough.”Margaret shook her head.“I have spent years trying to understand what happened in that hospital. I raised Elena believing she was my daughter. I lost Matthew. I watched Daniel build a life around secrets. But I have never knowingly hidden another child.”Elena stepped closer.“Grandma, who is the fourth child?”Evelyn looked at her.“Someone who grew up believing they had no connection to the Vale family.”“Then tell us their name.”“I can't.”Charles gave a frustrated laugh.“Of course you can't. You appear with another mystery, make accusations, and expect everyone to believe you.”Evelyn turned toward him.“You know more than you're admitting.”“And you know less than you pretend.”Jonathan stepped between them.“Enough. We need to establish what happened before another person gets hurt by these lies.”Adrian picke
Elena couldn't move.Evelyn stood at the entrance, holding the photograph against her chest. For years, the family had searched for her. Some believed she was dead. Others believed she had abandoned them. But she was standing there.Alive.And apparently, carrying another secret.“What do you mean?” Elena finally asked. “What other child did you take?”Evelyn looked around the room.“Before I answer, I need everyone to understand something. The hospital records were not changed to protect one child. They were changed to protect several.”Catherine stepped forward.“You took my daughter.”“I saved your daughter.”“You separated me from her!”Evelyn lowered her eyes.“I know.”Catherine's voice broke.“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”“I do. And I have regretted it every day.”Charles moved closer.“You don't get to return after all these years and pretend you were protecting everyone.”Evelyn looked at him.“You're the last person who should question my decisions.”Charles's
Jonathan didn't move. The message remained on Adrian's phone, its words hanging over the room like a threat.ASK JONATHAN WHO HE BURIED TWENTY YEARS AGO.Elena stared at him.“Who did you bury?”Jonathan looked away.“Someone who should have stayed dead.”Catherine's eyes widened.“Jonathan!”He raised a hand.“Not here.”Charles stepped forward.“No. We're done hiding things. Tell us who was buried.”Jonathan's jaw tightened.“Michael Hayes.”Margaret gasped.Catherine staggered backward.“No,” she whispered. “Michael was alive when I was told he died.”Jonathan nodded.“I know.”Elena looked between them.“Then whose funeral did you attend?”Jonathan took a slow breath.“His brother's.”Adrian frowned.“Margaret just said the man she married wasn't Michael. Are you saying she married his brother?”Jonathan nodded.“Yes.”Margaret shook her head.“That's not what he told me.”“What did he tell you?” Elena asked.Margaret looked confused.“He introduced himself as Michael. He had Mich
The room fell silent.Elena stared at Margaret.“Michael Hayes was your husband?”Margaret nodded slowly.“Before I married Daniel, yes.”Catherine took a step forward.“That isn't possible.”Margaret turned toward her.“I wish it weren't.”“You told me Michael died before I discovered I was pregnant.”“I know what you were told.”Catherine's eyes filled with anger.“Then explain why you were married to him.”Margaret looked down at the photograph in Elena's hands.“Because someone needed to give him a reason to disappear.”Jonathan's expression hardened.“Margaret, be careful.”She ignored him.“Michael was already in danger when I met him. He had discovered something about the original inheritance agreement. Something that could have destroyed the Vale family.”Charles folded his arms.“And you expect us to believe you married him to protect him?”“No,” Margaret replied. “I married him because he asked me to.”Catherine shook her head.“Why would he ask you?”“Because he needed a le
Catherine read the message again.HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Then she looked at Jonathan.“Who was my daughter's father?”Jonathan's expression became guarded.“I thought Charles was.”“So did I,” Catherine replied. “But Evelyn wouldn't have written that unless she knew something.”Adrian examined the photograph.“Could the message be referring to another man?”Richard shook his head.“The photograph was taken years after the child was born. Whoever wrote this wanted Catherine to understand that the truth had been hidden deliberately.”Samuel looked towards Catherine.“Did you have another relationship before Charles?”Catherine hesitated.“There was someone. But I was told he died before I discovered I was pregnant.”Jonathan stepped closer.“Who was he?”Catherine looked at him.“His name was Michael.”The name meant nothing to Elena. But Daniel, who had remained silent near the doorway, suddenly raised his head.“Michael what?”Catheri
