LOGINElena couldn't move.
Someone inside her family knew the truth about the third heir.
And according to Grace, that person had been hiding behind Lily's name.
“Who is it?” Adrian demanded.
Grace looked towards the closed curtains.
“I cannot tell you that.”
Samuel stepped closer.
“You kept records for years. You know more than you're admitting.”
“I know what I witnessed. I don't know who is responsible for everything that happened afterward.”
Elena placed both hands on the table.
“Then tell us what Jonathan's promise meant.”
Grace opened the notebook again.
“The third heir wasn't selected because of a birth certificate or a family name. Jonathan created a separate arrangement. The person who carried the promise would become the guardian of the inheritance.”
Richard frowned.
“So the third heir might not be a biological descendant?”
“Correct.”
Adrian studied the sentence.
“Then why did everyone keep talking about bloodlines?”
“Because Charles wanted the family to believe that inheritance was determined by blood. It made people easier to control.”
Elena looked at the notebook.
“Who was supposed to receive the promise?”
Grace turned another page.
The paper had been torn.
Only three words remained.
THE ONE WHO REMAINED.
---
A loud knock interrupted them.
Richard immediately moved towards the door.
“Wait,” Samuel warned.
He looked through the window.
A black vehicle was parked across the road.
Two men stood beside it.
“They followed us,” he whispered.
Adrian took the notebook from the table.
“Grace, is there another exit?”
She nodded towards the kitchen.
“There's a back door. It leads to the next street.”
Elena shook her head.
“I'm not leaving her here.”
Grace held Elena's hand.
“You must. If they take that notebook, everything Jonathan protected will disappear.”
Adrian looked at Samuel.
“Take Elena and Richard. I'll stay with Grace.”
“No,” Elena protested.
“I'm not arguing with you about this.”
Before she could respond, Grace reached into her pocket and produced a small brass key.
“Take this. It opens a storage room beneath the old chapel.”
Samuel stared at it.
“Jonathan's chapel?”
Grace nodded.
“He left something there before he disappeared.”
Elena accepted the key.
“What?”
Grace's eyes filled with concern.
“The original guardian's declaration.”
---
They escaped through the back door.
Samuel led them through a narrow street while Richard kept checking behind them.
When they reached the vehicle, Elena turned towards the house.
“Adrian is still inside.”
Samuel started the engine.
“He knows what he's doing.”
“That doesn't mean we should leave him.”
Richard looked at her.
“Adrian told us to protect the notebook. If we lose it, we may never understand what Jonathan was trying to reveal.”
Elena reluctantly entered the car.
As they drove away, her phone rang.
Adrian.
She answered immediately.
“Are you safe?”
“I'm fine. Grace is safe too.”
“What happened?”
“They searched the house. They were looking for the notebook.”
“Did they find anything?”
“No. But Elena, there's something you need to know.”
She gripped the phone.
“What?”
“Grace said one of the people who signed the second agreement was not supposed to sign it.”
Elena glanced at Samuel.
“Who?”
“Daniel Bennett.”
Elena's stomach tightened.
“My father?”
“Grace says he signed on behalf of someone else. Someone who couldn't legally appear on the document.”
The call suddenly disconnected.
Elena stared at her screen.
Then another message arrived.
ASK MARGARET WHY SHE NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT YOUR FIRST NIGHT AT THE BENNETT HOUSE.
---
At the mansion, Margaret was sitting beside Lily when Elena's call came through.
“Mom, I need to ask you something.”
Margaret immediately noticed the tension in her voice.
“What happened?”
“Did Daniel sign the second agreement on behalf of someone else?”
There was silence.
“Mom?”
Margaret slowly stood.
“Where did you hear that?”
“Just answer me.”
Margaret glanced at Lily, who was playing with her drawing book.
“Not over the phone. Come home.”
“Was it Jonathan?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Your grandmother.”
Elena froze.
“Evelyn?”
“Yes. She asked Daniel to sign because she was protecting someone.”
“Who?”
Margaret's voice trembled.
“You.”
---
When Elena returned to the mansion, Margaret was waiting in the drawing room.
Adrian had arrived shortly before them.
He approached Elena immediately.
“Are you alright?”
She nodded, then faced Margaret.
“You said Evelyn arranged for Daniel to sign the agreement on her behalf. Why?”
Margaret sat down.
“Because Evelyn believed someone was watching her. She knew Jonathan's declaration contained information that could destroy the Blackwood family.”
“And what did that have to do with me?”
Margaret looked at her.
“Evelyn knew you would eventually be connected to the inheritance. She wanted to protect you without exposing your identity.”
Elena shook her head.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me. Yet nobody thought I deserved the truth.”
Margaret had no answer.
Samuel placed Grace's notebook on the table.
“We need to understand the phrase 'the one who remained.'”
Richard examined the torn page.
“Could it refer to someone who stayed with Jonathan when everyone else abandoned him?”
Margaret looked up sharply.
“That's what Jonathan used to say.”
Everyone turned towards her.
“What do you mean?” Adrian asked.
“Jonathan once told Evelyn that the third heir would not be the strongest person in the family. It would be the person who remained loyal when the others chose power.”
Elena looked at the names in the notebook.
“Then it could be anyone.”
“Not anyone,” Margaret replied. “Only someone who was present when the original promise was made.”
---
A door opened behind them.
Jonathan entered the drawing room.
He looked exhausted, but his expression changed when he saw the notebook.
“Where did you get that?”
“Grace,” Samuel answered.
Jonathan walked towards the table and turned directly to the final page.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he noticed the brass key beside Elena's handbag.
“Where did you get this?”
“Grace gave it to us. She said it opens a storage room beneath the old chapel.”
Jonathan's face tightened.
“She shouldn't have given you that.”
“Why?” Elena asked.
“Because the declaration isn't there anymore.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Who took it?”
Jonathan looked at Richard.
“I thought you had destroyed it.”
Richard's expression changed.
“I never had it.”
Jonathan slowly turned towards him.
“Then someone has been lying to me for twenty-one years.”
Before anyone could respond, the mansion's security alarm sounded.
A guard rushed into the room.
“Sir, someone has entered the east wing.”
Jonathan immediately moved towards the door.
“Where is Lily?”
Margaret looked around.
“She was upstairs with her nanny.”
Elena hurried towards the staircase.
“Lily!”
No answer.
She reached the bedroom.
The room was empty.
Her daughter's drawing book lay open on the bed.
Beside it was a folded piece of paper.
Elena opened it with trembling fingers.
There were only two sentences.
THE THIRD HEIR IS NOT THE ONE YOU THINK.
AND THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE DECLARATION HAS TAKEN YOUR DAUGHTER.
Elena turned towards Adrian.
“Lily is missing.”
His expression went cold.
Jonathan took the note from her.
But when he saw the handwriting, his face changed completely.
He recognised it.
It belonged to Evelyn.
Adrian stared at the message.DON'T TRUST DANIEL. HE KNOWS WHO THE CHILD IS BECAUSE HE HELPED HIDE HIM.Daniel watched him.“What's wrong?”Adrian turned the phone around.“Richard says you helped hide the fourth child.”Daniel's expression barely changed.“Richard doesn't know what he's talking about.”“Then why is he warning me about you?”“Because he wants to turn you against me.”Elena stepped forward.“Enough. We need the truth, not another argument.”Daniel looked at her.“I've spent years protecting you.”“By lying to me?”“By keeping you alive.”The words silenced her.Margaret moved closer to Daniel.“You knew Isabella?”Daniel nodded.“She was my wife's sister.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”“Because Isabella made me promise never to reveal what happened to her child.”Margaret's eyes filled.“You let me believe she disappeared without explanation.”“She had to.”“Why?”Daniel opened his mouth, but Adrian's phone rang again.Richard.This time Adrian answered and put the ca
Margaret stared at Evelyn.“That's not true.”Evelyn didn't look away.“You know exactly who I'm talking about.”“No, I don't.”“Margaret, please. We've hidden enough.”Margaret shook her head.“I have spent years trying to understand what happened in that hospital. I raised Elena believing she was my daughter. I lost Matthew. I watched Daniel build a life around secrets. But I have never knowingly hidden another child.”Elena stepped closer.“Grandma, who is the fourth child?”Evelyn looked at her.“Someone who grew up believing they had no connection to the Vale family.”“Then tell us their name.”“I can't.”Charles gave a frustrated laugh.“Of course you can't. You appear with another mystery, make accusations, and expect everyone to believe you.”Evelyn turned toward him.“You know more than you're admitting.”“And you know less than you pretend.”Jonathan stepped between them.“Enough. We need to establish what happened before another person gets hurt by these lies.”Adrian picke
Elena couldn't move.Evelyn stood at the entrance, holding the photograph against her chest. For years, the family had searched for her. Some believed she was dead. Others believed she had abandoned them. But she was standing there.Alive.And apparently, carrying another secret.“What do you mean?” Elena finally asked. “What other child did you take?”Evelyn looked around the room.“Before I answer, I need everyone to understand something. The hospital records were not changed to protect one child. They were changed to protect several.”Catherine stepped forward.“You took my daughter.”“I saved your daughter.”“You separated me from her!”Evelyn lowered her eyes.“I know.”Catherine's voice broke.“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”“I do. And I have regretted it every day.”Charles moved closer.“You don't get to return after all these years and pretend you were protecting everyone.”Evelyn looked at him.“You're the last person who should question my decisions.”Charles's
Jonathan didn't move. The message remained on Adrian's phone, its words hanging over the room like a threat.ASK JONATHAN WHO HE BURIED TWENTY YEARS AGO.Elena stared at him.“Who did you bury?”Jonathan looked away.“Someone who should have stayed dead.”Catherine's eyes widened.“Jonathan!”He raised a hand.“Not here.”Charles stepped forward.“No. We're done hiding things. Tell us who was buried.”Jonathan's jaw tightened.“Michael Hayes.”Margaret gasped.Catherine staggered backward.“No,” she whispered. “Michael was alive when I was told he died.”Jonathan nodded.“I know.”Elena looked between them.“Then whose funeral did you attend?”Jonathan took a slow breath.“His brother's.”Adrian frowned.“Margaret just said the man she married wasn't Michael. Are you saying she married his brother?”Jonathan nodded.“Yes.”Margaret shook her head.“That's not what he told me.”“What did he tell you?” Elena asked.Margaret looked confused.“He introduced himself as Michael. He had Mich
The room fell silent.Elena stared at Margaret.“Michael Hayes was your husband?”Margaret nodded slowly.“Before I married Daniel, yes.”Catherine took a step forward.“That isn't possible.”Margaret turned toward her.“I wish it weren't.”“You told me Michael died before I discovered I was pregnant.”“I know what you were told.”Catherine's eyes filled with anger.“Then explain why you were married to him.”Margaret looked down at the photograph in Elena's hands.“Because someone needed to give him a reason to disappear.”Jonathan's expression hardened.“Margaret, be careful.”She ignored him.“Michael was already in danger when I met him. He had discovered something about the original inheritance agreement. Something that could have destroyed the Vale family.”Charles folded his arms.“And you expect us to believe you married him to protect him?”“No,” Margaret replied. “I married him because he asked me to.”Catherine shook her head.“Why would he ask you?”“Because he needed a le
Catherine read the message again.HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Then she looked at Jonathan.“Who was my daughter's father?”Jonathan's expression became guarded.“I thought Charles was.”“So did I,” Catherine replied. “But Evelyn wouldn't have written that unless she knew something.”Adrian examined the photograph.“Could the message be referring to another man?”Richard shook his head.“The photograph was taken years after the child was born. Whoever wrote this wanted Catherine to understand that the truth had been hidden deliberately.”Samuel looked towards Catherine.“Did you have another relationship before Charles?”Catherine hesitated.“There was someone. But I was told he died before I discovered I was pregnant.”Jonathan stepped closer.“Who was he?”Catherine looked at him.“His name was Michael.”The name meant nothing to Elena. But Daniel, who had remained silent near the doorway, suddenly raised his head.“Michael what?”Catheri
