LOGIN“That's impossible,” Elena whispered.
Jonathan stared at the note in his hands.
“Evelyn wrote this.”
Elena snatched it from him.
“My grandmother wouldn't take Lily. She loves her.”
“I'm not saying she did,” Jonathan replied. “But whoever took Lily wanted us to believe she was responsible.”
Adrian was already reaching for his phone.
“Lock down every exit. Nobody leaves this property until we know how Lily disappeared.”
Within minutes, the mansion was in chaos.
Security officers searched the bedrooms, gardens and surrounding roads. Margaret sat on the staircase, struggling to understand how someone had entered the house without triggering the alarms.
Elena stood beside Adrian.
“She's only a child. What if she's frightened?”
Adrian held her gaze.
“We'll find her.”
Jonathan approached them.
“There is something about Evelyn you need to know.”
Elena turned sharply.
“Not another secret, Jonathan. Not now.”
“I understand. But this one may explain everything.”
He took a breath.
“Evelyn has been missing for three days.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because she sent a message saying she was travelling to meet someone. I believed she was safe.”
Samuel approached with his phone.
“Sir, there's something you should see.”
He showed them a security photograph.
It captured a woman entering the mansion through the east entrance shortly before Lily disappeared.
The image was unclear, but the woman wore a familiar silver bracelet.
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Evelyn.”
---
At the police station, Adrian arranged for the disappearance to be reported and provided the security footage.
Meanwhile, Samuel examined the photograph on a larger screen.
“Look at her left hand.”
Richard leaned closer.
“She's holding something.”
Samuel enlarged the image.
It was a small wooden box.
Jonathan immediately recognised it.
“That's the guardian's box.”
Elena looked at him.
“What is inside it?”
“The original declaration, if Evelyn managed to recover it.”
Adrian frowned.
“Then why would she take Lily?”
Jonathan shook his head.
“She wouldn't. Unless Lily was the only person she could trust with something.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“She's a child, Jonathan. She cannot be part of another family arrangement.”
“I know.”
Samuel suddenly stopped scrolling.
“There's another image.”
A second photograph showed the same woman leaving the mansion.
But this time, she was alone.
No Lily.
No wooden box.
Only a folded piece of paper visible in her hand.
Richard pointed at the screen.
“That's not Evelyn.”
Everyone turned towards him.
“How can you be sure?” Elena asked.
Richard zoomed in on the woman's face.
“Because Evelyn has a scar above her right eyebrow. This woman doesn't.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“Then who is she?”
Richard looked at the bracelet.
“Someone who wanted us to believe she was Evelyn.”
---
At the Vale estate, Charles received a phone call.
“Everything is proceeding as planned,” the caller said.
“Did you get the box?”
“Yes.”
“And the child?”
A pause followed.
“She isn't with us.”
Charles stood abruptly.
“What do you mean?”
“The woman delivered the box, but the child was never taken.”
Charles stared at the wall.
“Then where is Lily?”
“We don't know.”
Charles ended the call.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely worried.
He opened a cabinet and removed an old photograph.
It showed Jonathan standing beside a young woman.
On the back were four words:
THE GUARDIAN'S PROMISE BEGINS.
Charles turned the photograph over again.
“Evelyn,” he whispered. “What have you done?”
---
Back at the mansion, Elena received a video message from an unknown number.
Her hands tightened around her phone.
“Adrian.”
He came immediately.
The video showed Lily sitting in a small room, drawing on a piece of paper.
She appeared unharmed.
A woman stood beside her, but her face remained outside the camera's view.
Lily looked up.
“Mummy?”
Elena moved closer to the screen.
“Lily, sweetheart, where are you?”
The video ended.
A message appeared beneath it.
BRING THE GUARDIAN'S KEY TO THE OLD CHAPEL. COME ALONE.
Adrian read it twice.
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“They have Lily.”
“And they want you to walk into a trap.”
“Then we find another way.”
Samuel examined the message.
“The sender knows about the key. That means they have access to information from the original agreement.”
Jonathan took the phone.
“There's only one person who knew every detail of that agreement.”
“Who?” Richard asked.
Jonathan looked towards the staircase.
“Victoria.”
---
They found Victoria in the mansion's guest wing.
She was standing by the window, speaking quietly on her phone.
When she noticed them, she ended the call.
“What's happened?”
Elena held up the video.
“Where is my daughter?”
Victoria watched the recording.
Her expression changed.
“I don't know.”
“Someone wearing your family's secrets has taken Lily. Someone who knows about the guardian's key.”
Victoria looked at Jonathan.
“Have you told them?”
“Told us what?” Adrian demanded.
Victoria hesitated.
Then she walked towards a locked cabinet and removed a thin folder.
“The guardian's key does not open the storage room beneath the chapel.”
Elena stared at her.
“Grace said it did.”
“Grace was protecting you. The key opens something else.”
She placed an old document on the table.
At the top was a name:
THE HOUSE OF THE FIRST PROMISE.
Beneath it was an address.
Richard recognised it immediately.
“That's Evelyn's abandoned residence.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“No. That house was demolished years ago.”
Victoria pointed to the document.
“Not the original house. The one beneath it.”
Silence filled the room.
Adrian looked at her.
“There's an underground chamber?”
Victoria nodded.
“Jonathan built it to protect the original declaration. Only the guardian could enter.”
Elena picked up the document.
“Then that's where we go.”
Victoria caught her arm.
“Listen carefully. If you enter that chamber, you may discover that the person you have trusted most has been protecting the wrong heir.”
Elena pulled her hand away.
“I've had enough of warnings. I want my daughter back.”
---
An hour later, Elena and Adrian stood outside the abandoned residence with Samuel and Jonathan.
The old building was surrounded by overgrown vegetation.
Elena inserted the brass key into a small metal lock hidden beneath a stone staircase.
A click echoed.
A narrow passage opened.
They descended carefully until they reached a heavy door.
Three names were engraved across its surface:
FIRST: SAMUEL VALE.
SECOND: ELENA ROSE BENNETT.
THIRD: UNKNOWN.
Below the names was a final inscription.
THE GUARDIAN MUST CHOOSE WHOSE TRUTH SURVIVES.
Jonathan pushed the door.
It opened slowly.
Inside was a wooden table, an empty display case and a large portrait of Evelyn.
But there was something else.
A recent photograph lay beneath the portrait.
Elena picked it up.
It showed Evelyn standing beside Lily.
Both were smiling.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
MY DEAR ELENA, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THEN THE PERSON WHO STOLE MY IDENTITY HAS FINALLY FOUND YOU.
Elena's phone vibrated.
A final message appeared.
YOUR DAUGHTER IS SAFE. BUT THE PERSON WHO HAS HER IS NOT YOUR ENEMY.
Elena looked up at Adrian.
Then a voice came from the darkness behind them.
“That's because I'm the only person who can protect her.”
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped into the light.
It was Amelia Vale.
Adrian's mother.
The woman everyone had believed disappeared years ago.
Adrian stared at the message.DON'T TRUST DANIEL. HE KNOWS WHO THE CHILD IS BECAUSE HE HELPED HIDE HIM.Daniel watched him.“What's wrong?”Adrian turned the phone around.“Richard says you helped hide the fourth child.”Daniel's expression barely changed.“Richard doesn't know what he's talking about.”“Then why is he warning me about you?”“Because he wants to turn you against me.”Elena stepped forward.“Enough. We need the truth, not another argument.”Daniel looked at her.“I've spent years protecting you.”“By lying to me?”“By keeping you alive.”The words silenced her.Margaret moved closer to Daniel.“You knew Isabella?”Daniel nodded.“She was my wife's sister.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”“Because Isabella made me promise never to reveal what happened to her child.”Margaret's eyes filled.“You let me believe she disappeared without explanation.”“She had to.”“Why?”Daniel opened his mouth, but Adrian's phone rang again.Richard.This time Adrian answered and put the ca
Margaret stared at Evelyn.“That's not true.”Evelyn didn't look away.“You know exactly who I'm talking about.”“No, I don't.”“Margaret, please. We've hidden enough.”Margaret shook her head.“I have spent years trying to understand what happened in that hospital. I raised Elena believing she was my daughter. I lost Matthew. I watched Daniel build a life around secrets. But I have never knowingly hidden another child.”Elena stepped closer.“Grandma, who is the fourth child?”Evelyn looked at her.“Someone who grew up believing they had no connection to the Vale family.”“Then tell us their name.”“I can't.”Charles gave a frustrated laugh.“Of course you can't. You appear with another mystery, make accusations, and expect everyone to believe you.”Evelyn turned toward him.“You know more than you're admitting.”“And you know less than you pretend.”Jonathan stepped between them.“Enough. We need to establish what happened before another person gets hurt by these lies.”Adrian picke
Elena couldn't move.Evelyn stood at the entrance, holding the photograph against her chest. For years, the family had searched for her. Some believed she was dead. Others believed she had abandoned them. But she was standing there.Alive.And apparently, carrying another secret.“What do you mean?” Elena finally asked. “What other child did you take?”Evelyn looked around the room.“Before I answer, I need everyone to understand something. The hospital records were not changed to protect one child. They were changed to protect several.”Catherine stepped forward.“You took my daughter.”“I saved your daughter.”“You separated me from her!”Evelyn lowered her eyes.“I know.”Catherine's voice broke.“Do you have any idea what that did to me?”“I do. And I have regretted it every day.”Charles moved closer.“You don't get to return after all these years and pretend you were protecting everyone.”Evelyn looked at him.“You're the last person who should question my decisions.”Charles's
Jonathan didn't move. The message remained on Adrian's phone, its words hanging over the room like a threat.ASK JONATHAN WHO HE BURIED TWENTY YEARS AGO.Elena stared at him.“Who did you bury?”Jonathan looked away.“Someone who should have stayed dead.”Catherine's eyes widened.“Jonathan!”He raised a hand.“Not here.”Charles stepped forward.“No. We're done hiding things. Tell us who was buried.”Jonathan's jaw tightened.“Michael Hayes.”Margaret gasped.Catherine staggered backward.“No,” she whispered. “Michael was alive when I was told he died.”Jonathan nodded.“I know.”Elena looked between them.“Then whose funeral did you attend?”Jonathan took a slow breath.“His brother's.”Adrian frowned.“Margaret just said the man she married wasn't Michael. Are you saying she married his brother?”Jonathan nodded.“Yes.”Margaret shook her head.“That's not what he told me.”“What did he tell you?” Elena asked.Margaret looked confused.“He introduced himself as Michael. He had Mich
The room fell silent.Elena stared at Margaret.“Michael Hayes was your husband?”Margaret nodded slowly.“Before I married Daniel, yes.”Catherine took a step forward.“That isn't possible.”Margaret turned toward her.“I wish it weren't.”“You told me Michael died before I discovered I was pregnant.”“I know what you were told.”Catherine's eyes filled with anger.“Then explain why you were married to him.”Margaret looked down at the photograph in Elena's hands.“Because someone needed to give him a reason to disappear.”Jonathan's expression hardened.“Margaret, be careful.”She ignored him.“Michael was already in danger when I met him. He had discovered something about the original inheritance agreement. Something that could have destroyed the Vale family.”Charles folded his arms.“And you expect us to believe you married him to protect him?”“No,” Margaret replied. “I married him because he asked me to.”Catherine shook her head.“Why would he ask you?”“Because he needed a le
Catherine read the message again.HER FATHER WAS NOT CHARLES VALE.For several seconds, she couldn't speak. Then she looked at Jonathan.“Who was my daughter's father?”Jonathan's expression became guarded.“I thought Charles was.”“So did I,” Catherine replied. “But Evelyn wouldn't have written that unless she knew something.”Adrian examined the photograph.“Could the message be referring to another man?”Richard shook his head.“The photograph was taken years after the child was born. Whoever wrote this wanted Catherine to understand that the truth had been hidden deliberately.”Samuel looked towards Catherine.“Did you have another relationship before Charles?”Catherine hesitated.“There was someone. But I was told he died before I discovered I was pregnant.”Jonathan stepped closer.“Who was he?”Catherine looked at him.“His name was Michael.”The name meant nothing to Elena. But Daniel, who had remained silent near the doorway, suddenly raised his head.“Michael what?”Catheri
