Samuel stood motionless, staring at Jonathan.

“Is it true?”

Jonathan lowered the declaration.

“Samuel, listen to me.”

“No. I've listened to everyone for years. I've listened to stories about my mother, my father and the family I supposedly belonged to. I want one honest answer.”

Jonathan looked at Amelia.

She slowly nodded.

“Tell him,” she said.

Jonathan took a deep breath.

“Your biological mother was Catherine Vale.”

Samuel's expression changed.

“The same Catherine Vale who signed the original agreement?”

“Yes.”

Samuel shook his head.

“That's impossible. Catherine was supposed to be Charles's relative. She was never part of my life.”

“She was more than a relative,” Jonathan replied. “She was the woman I loved.”

Silence filled the chamber.

Elena looked between them.

“Then Charles is…”

“Your biological uncle,” Jonathan answered. “Catherine and Charles were siblings.”

Samuel stepped backwards.

“And you knew this all along?”

“I knew who your mother was. I didn't know where she had been taken.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Charles threatened to use you against her. He knew you were the only person who could expose what happened to Catherine.”

Samuel's voice cracked.

“So you let me grow up believing I had no connection to this family?”

“I believed keeping you away from the Vale name would protect you.”

Samuel looked away.

“Everyone keeps calling their lies protection.”

---

Amelia placed another document on the table.

“There's something else. Catherine didn't simply disappear. She left instructions with Evelyn before she was taken away.”

Richard examined the document.

It contained a list of names and dates, followed by a statement:

MY SON MUST NEVER BE USED TO RESTORE THE VALE EMPIRE. HIS FUTURE MUST REMAIN HIS OWN.

Samuel stared at the words.

“She knew what Charles would do?”

“She knew what he was capable of,” Amelia replied.

Adrian looked at his mother.

“Then why didn't you tell me any of this when you returned?”

“Because I needed to find Catherine first. I couldn't risk exposing Samuel's identity before I knew whether she was alive.”

Jonathan frowned.

“Do you know where she is?”

Amelia hesitated.

“I received a message from her six months ago.”

Samuel immediately turned.

“Where is she?”

“I don't know. The message contained an address and one instruction: find the guardian before Charles does.”

Elena looked at the declaration.

“Evelyn?”

Amelia nodded.

“But Evelyn disappeared before I could reach her.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“Then we have been searching for the wrong person.”

---

A loud noise echoed from the passage.

Richard rushed towards the entrance.

“Someone has opened the outer door.”

Victoria immediately took the declaration from Jonathan.

“Charles.”

Adrian moved towards the passage.

“We need another exit.”

Amelia pointed towards a narrow staircase behind the shelves.

“There's a second passage. It leads to the old garden.”

They hurried through it.

Samuel remained behind for a moment, staring at Catherine's statement.

Jonathan stopped.

“Come with us.”

Samuel looked at him.

“Did you ever love her?”

Jonathan understood immediately.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you let her disappear?”

Jonathan's eyes filled with regret.

“I spent years looking for her. I failed to bring her home, but I never stopped trying.”

Samuel folded the statement and placed it inside his jacket.

“Then help me find her.”

---

They emerged into the abandoned garden just as headlights appeared beyond the gate.

Two vehicles approached.

Victoria looked towards the road.

“We're surrounded.”

Adrian pulled out his phone.

“Security is on the way.”

Before anyone could move, a loudspeaker came from the first vehicle.

“Jonathan Vale! Hand over the declaration.”

Charles stepped out.

He was accompanied by several men.

Jonathan moved in front of Elena.

“You've had enough opportunities to tell the truth, Charles.”

Charles laughed.

“Truth? You have spent your entire life confusing truth with whatever makes you feel righteous.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“Where is my mother?”

Charles looked at him.

For the first time, his expression revealed surprise.

“Catherine's son.”

Samuel's jaw tightened.

“Where is she?”

Charles adjusted his jacket.

“Your mother made a choice. She walked away from this family.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Don't lie to him.”

Charles ignored him.

“Catherine chose to protect her child. She knew that if she remained, the Vale family would destroy everything she loved.”

Samuel took another step.

“Then tell me where she is.”

Charles smiled.

“Bring me the original declaration, and perhaps I'll tell you.”

Victoria held the document tightly.

“Don't believe him.”

Charles's gaze shifted towards her.

“You've always been a disappointment, Victoria.”

“And you've always been afraid of people who know your secrets.”

---

Suddenly, a car entered the garden from the opposite gate.

Its headlights illuminated the entire courtyard.

Everyone turned.

The driver's door opened.

An elderly woman stepped out.

She was dressed in a dark coat, leaning slightly on a walking stick.

Jonathan dropped his hands.

“Catherine?”

Samuel froze.

The woman looked directly at him.

“My son.”

For several seconds, Samuel couldn't speak.

Then he slowly walked towards her.

“Mother?”

Catherine nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.

“I have waited so long to hear you call me that.”

Samuel stopped in front of her.

“Why didn't you come back?”

Catherine reached for his hand.

“Because I made a promise to keep you safe.”

He looked at her.

“Everyone says that. I'm tired of being protected from the truth.”

Catherine lowered her head.

“You're right. And you deserve to know everything.”

She turned towards Charles.

“But not here.”

Charles stepped forward.

“You should have stayed away, Catherine.”

She looked at him without fear.

“I stayed away long enough.”

Then she faced Jonathan.

“Have you told them what happened to the third heir?”

Jonathan's expression changed.

“No. The declaration doesn't reveal the identity.”

Catherine gave a small, bitter smile.

“Because the declaration was never meant to reveal a name.”

She reached into her coat and removed a sealed envelope.

“This is the original record of the third heir.”

Elena stared at it.

“Who is it?”

Catherine looked at Adrian, then at Samuel.

Finally, her eyes settled on Elena.

“The third heir is the person Charles has been trying to erase since the beginning.”

She handed Elena the envelope.

Before Elena could open it, Charles shouted:

“Don't!”

Everyone turned.

For the first time, Charles looked frightened.

Catherine's voice was steady.

“It's time they knew what you did to your own daughter.”
