“Amelia?”

Adrian could barely recognise his own voice.

The woman standing before him looked older than the photographs he had seen, but there was no mistaking her face.

His mother.

The woman he had spent years believing was gone forever.

Amelia stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

He didn't move.

“Where have you been?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Trying to keep you alive.”

Adrian let out a bitter laugh.

“You left me with people who told me you were dead. You allowed me to grow up believing I had been abandoned.”

“I never abandoned you.”

“Then why didn't you come back?”

Amelia lowered her gaze.

“Because the moment I returned, Charles would have known where you were.”

Jonathan stepped between them.

“You should have told me she was alive.”

Amelia looked at him.

“I couldn't trust anyone. Not even you.”

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“After everything I did to protect you?”

“You protected Adrian, Jonathan. But you didn't know who was controlling the people around you.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Where is Lily?”

Amelia turned towards her.

“She is safe.”

“That's not an answer. Where is my daughter?”

“She's with someone I trust.”

Elena's patience snapped.

“Everyone keeps telling me Lily is safe while refusing to tell me where she is. I want the truth.”

Amelia nodded.

“You deserve it.”

---

She led them towards a smaller room behind the chamber.

Inside was a table covered with documents and photographs.

Amelia picked up one photograph.

It showed her holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Evelyn.

“On the night Adrian was born, Charles arranged for the hospital records to be changed. He wanted to control the inheritance by controlling the identities of the children connected to the original agreement.”

Adrian studied the photograph.

“You knew about the third child?”

“Yes.”

“Who was it?”

Amelia hesitated.

“Samuel.”

Everyone turned towards him.

Samuel frowned.

“What?”

Amelia looked directly at him.

“You were born before Adrian. But your birth was recorded under a different family name.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“That's not possible. Samuel's mother—”

“Was not the woman whose name appeared on his original hospital record,” Amelia interrupted.

Samuel stared at her.

“Are you saying my entire childhood was built on a lie?”

“No. I'm saying someone changed your records to hide your connection to Jonathan.”

Jonathan slowly sat down.

“Samuel…”

Amelia placed another document on the table.

It was an old birth registration.

The name of the mother had been crossed out.

But the father's name remained visible.

JONATHAN VALE.

Samuel stepped backwards.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Jonathan looked devastated.

“Because I believed the records were false. I was told your mother had died before I could find her.”

Amelia shook her head.

“Your mother didn't die. She was forced to leave.”

Samuel's voice became quiet.

“Who forced her?”

Amelia looked towards the door.

“Charles.”

---

Adrian picked up the birth record.

“Then who is the third heir?”

Amelia took a deep breath.

“The third heir is not determined by the birth records. Samuel was named first, Elena second, but the third position was deliberately left open.”

“Why?” Richard asked.

“Because Jonathan wanted the final heir to be chosen by the guardian, not by Charles or Alexander.”

Elena looked at the photograph of Evelyn.

“And Lily?”

Amelia nodded.

“Lily carries the promise that was made between Jonathan and Evelyn. But that doesn't make her the third heir.”

“Then why does everyone keep using her name?”

“Because Charles believes the promise gives him control over the inheritance. He doesn't understand what Jonathan actually intended.”

Jonathan stared at her.

“You know where the original declaration is.”

Amelia nodded.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Evelyn took it before she disappeared.”

Richard frowned.

“But the declaration was supposedly stolen.”

Amelia opened the wooden box she had carried into the chamber.

Inside was a folded document sealed with a black ribbon.

“The document Charles stole was a copy.”

Jonathan took it carefully.

The seal bore the same crown symbol engraved on the guardian's ring.

Elena moved closer.

“Open it.”

Jonathan broke the seal.

The first page listed Samuel as the first heir and Elena as the second.

The third name was covered by a separate sheet.

Jonathan removed it.

There was no name underneath.

Instead, a sentence had been written:

THE THIRD HEIR SHALL BE THE PERSON WHO REFUSES TO INHERIT THE EMPIRE.

Adrian read it twice.

“What does that mean?”

Amelia answered quietly.

“It means Jonathan wanted someone who would choose family over power.”

---

A sound came from the passage.

Everyone turned.

Richard moved towards the entrance.

“Someone is coming.”

A moment later, Victoria appeared.

Her expression changed when she saw Amelia.

“You're alive.”

Amelia looked at her coldly.

“Disappointed?”

Victoria ignored the remark.

“We don't have much time. Charles knows this chamber has been opened.”

Jonathan folded the declaration.

“Then we leave.”

Victoria shook her head.

“Not yet.”

She turned towards Elena.

“You need to know why Charles is so determined to find the third heir.”

Elena looked exhausted.

“Then tell me.”

Victoria removed a photograph from her handbag.

It showed Charles standing beside a woman Elena had never seen.

The woman held a baby.

On the back was a date and a short message:

THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER REGISTERED.

“Who is she?” Adrian asked.

Victoria's answer came slowly.

“Her name was Catherine Vale.”

Amelia's expression changed.

“Catherine?”

Victoria nodded.

“She gave birth to a child before Adrian was born. Charles erased the child's identity because that baby was the only person who could legally challenge his control of the Vale inheritance.”

Samuel stared at the photograph.

“Where is that child now?”

Victoria looked towards Elena.

“That's what Charles has spent twenty-one years trying to hide.”

Elena's phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number appeared.

She answered.

A man's voice came through.

“Miss Bennett, I believe you've met my mother.”

Elena froze.

“Who is this?”

The man laughed softly.

“My name is not important yet. But I think you should know that Amelia hasn't told you everything.”

Adrian reached for the phone.

“Identify yourself.”

The caller ignored him.

Then he delivered the words that silenced the entire room.

“Ask Jonathan why he raised Samuel as someone else's son when he knew exactly who Samuel's mother was.”

The call ended.

Samuel slowly turned towards Jonathan.

“Is it true?”

Jonathan said nothing.

And in that silence, Samuel found the answer.
