Balancing the weight of the tray on my shoulder, I make my way through the crowded Golden Bistro, a restaurant frequented by the city’s wealthiest, known for its infamous dishes. It's only my first week working here.’’ Tonight, the place is busier than usual. As I worked my way around a table, I bumped into a solid figure, causing the wine to spill on him and the floor, shattering glasses and dishes in the process.
‘’Oh my God. I’m so sorry’’. I stammer, biting my lips in nervousness while avoiding eye contact with the man I believe is glaring at me.
The man barely moves but glances down at his now-stained suit with a look of pure disgust. ‘’Do you have any idea what you’ve just done?’’ He asks coldly, glancing at the stain on his suit once again.
He shakes his head slightly, his eyes narrowing as they sweep over me. ‘’How do you even expect to keep a job here when you can’t manage something as simple as carrying a tray? Pathetic’’.
My chest tightens with a mix of anger and embarrassment. I’m not used to being spoken to like that, and his harsh tone stings. ‘’I’m sorry, sir,’’ I say, struggling to remain polite. ‘’I’ll pay for any damage.’
’’Sorry?’’ He scoffs, his voice dropping further, almost as if he’s speaking to someone unworthy of his attention. ‘’Your apologies mean nothing. You should be grateful you even have this job, considering your lack of competence.’’
That does it. I can’t take it anymore. Who does he think he is? ‘’Excuse me, but I already said I’m sorry. You seriously have no right to insult or disrespect me like this. ‘’I can’t keep the frustration out of my tone.
He raises an eyebrow, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes as he steps closer to me. ‘’Respect is earned, not given freely. If you want to keep this job, I suggest you start by showing a bit more professionalism.’’
Before I can respond, my boss, Mr. Woods, pushes through the crowd toward us, looking anxious. ‘’Mr. Frost, I apologize on her behalf. It was an accident,’’ he says, bowing slightly.
The man–Mr. Frost– turns his attention to Mr. Woods, his demeanor not changing.’’ Do you hire all your staff with such…. loose standards?’’
I meet the man’s gaze, feeling my cheeks heat up in anger. I clench my fists, trying to control my temper. ‘’Normally, I respect my customers, but you seem to have a problem with that today.’’
‘’His lips curl into a faint smile, masking his annoyance.’’ It’s not about respect, Miss. It’s about competence. Maybe you need to rethink how you approach your work.
‘’Speaking of competence,’’ I say, keeping my voice steady. ‘’I spilled a drink on you by accident, and that’s enough for you to question my entire ability to work? You don’t even know me, and yet here you are assuming things.’’
‘Mr. woods interrupted sharply,’’ Enough, Julianna Apologize to him now.’’
My Jaw drops in disbelief.’’Sir, he started it……
You are not to be rude to any of my customers, they are the reasons you and everyone else here can work here. I won’t repeat myself,’ Apologize.’’
’’I clench my fist while forcing a sweet smile that feels completely unnatural. ‘’I’m sorry, sir. I should have watched where I was going.’’
‘’Not forgiven, but fine. He replies, a hint of amusement in his eyes as he stares at my clenched fist.’’Mr Woods, if this is the best you can manage, perhaps I’ll reconsider the dine.’’
With that, he turns and walks away, leaving me standing there, humiliated and fuming. I feel the tight grip of frustration rising in my chest. I want to scream but hold back. The mess around me—shattered glasses and spilled wine is nothing compared to the emotional wreckage that one man’s arrogance could leave behind.
‘’Julianna,’’ my boss growls, the disappointment evident in his tone. ‘’We need to talk. NOW.’’
He enters his office with me following behind. ‘’Julianna?’’ he calls with an obvious tone of frustration. ‘’ It’s been a week since you started working here, and i really like your attitude, but tonight just made me have doubts about you.’’
Biles rises in my throat as I stand in Mr. Woods' office, his eyes fixed on me. My heart races, and I bite my lip–a nervous habit I picked up from my mum. My mind spins with thoughts. This job pays better than my other jobs. I can’t afford to lose it.
‘’I’m so sorry. It won’t happen again,’’ I manage, swallowing the fear rising in my chest.
His gaze softens slightly, but still remains hard. ‘’You’ll need to prove that to me, Julianna. There won’t be another chance.’’

‘’ The moment my shift ends, I hurry out the back door and into the cool night air. I can’t shake the weight of his words, like a heavy cloud hanging over me. No matter how hard I try, words hurt me deeply, and his words keep crawling back, gnawing at my self-esteem.
‘’Who does he think he is?’’ I mutter under my breath, feeling angry. ‘’Just because he’s rich doesn’t mean he gets to treat people like garbage. It’s just not fair. Julianna, you deserve better than this.’’ I whisper to myself, the words echoing in my mind like a mantra.
I walk aimlessly through the city streets, the vibrant lights around me doing no justice to my mood.
Frustration fills my heart, but beyond that, a sense of helplessness. How could someone like me ever think of standing up to someone like him? He has everything–money, power, influence —and I'm just ... .a waitress.
Feeling overwhelmed, I find a place to sit. I close my eyes, immersing myself in the song playing softly from my phone, singing along quietly. My hurt vanishing into thin air as i remind myself that a bad day doesn’t mean a bad life.
Ethan's POV “Let's get you a wedding dress,” I said, winking at her. Her shocked expression was funny, and I had to fight the urge to burst into laughter. We got to the boutique, and the assistants greeted us warmly as we stepped inside.“Hello, sir and ma’am,” they said with a respectful bow.I gave a curt nod. “Where's your boss?”“Hello, Ethan!” A familiar voice screamed out, too loud for my liking. Rosa appeared walking alongside Jane, with a smile on her face. Before I could react, she pulled me into a hug catching me off guard.I gave her a small smile and gently pushed her away. “Rosa, I'm starting to think coming here was a mistake.”She rolled her eyes, ignoring my remark. Her gaze shifted to Julianna, and her eyes sparkled. “Damn, is this our gorgeous bride-to- be?”Jane nodded in affirmation, and Rosa’s smile widened as she stepped towards Julianna.“Hi,” Rosa said warmly, pulling Julianna into an unexpected hug.Julianna smiled shyly, her voice calm.“Hello.”“You're beau
Julianna's POVEven with the lights still on, I can't sleep. My body is sensitive to new places, and my mind won't stop replaying today's events. Should I start with the stress of being called in the middle of my sleep or the tension I walked into at Ethan's family home? From the looks of things, this family is….complicated, especially his mother, she wasn't just cold–she was hostile. The way she looked at him–like he wasn't her son but a stranger she despised. It's unsettling, Ethan has her features but the obvious tension between the mother and son is strong. Was I worried about him? Not. But I couldn't help being curious about…“I'm sorry… I'm sorry…”The sudden words pulled me out of my thoughts. I sat up and turned to the sound. The sight I saw was…disturbing. Ethan was clutching the bedcovers like his life depended on it, his face twisted in pain. Sweat covered his forehead and his breathing was heavy. He looked like a completely different person at that moment.I stood up from
Ethan's POV I watched her for a while as she entered her apartment. I subconsciously touched my cheeks where she had hit me. The sting on my cheek from the slap lingered. But it wasn't the pain that bothered me, it was the audacity. I clenched my Jaw as if trying to suppress my irritation. With a sigh, I turned on the engine and drove home. The penthouse was silent as I stepped inside. I took off my Jacket and loosened my tie, hanging them neatly in the closet. A hot shower did little to ease the heaviness. Dressed in a blue rope, I headed to the library, where my laptop waited for an online meeting. The moment the call connected. The faces of executives and international partners appeared on the screen.“Mr. Ethan,” one of them began, his tone formal. “Nexus Global International’s reputation is getting more pleasant to hear every single day.As the largest oil and Gas corporation in New York–one of the most influential worldwide. The success of your recent offshore project speaks
Chapter 19Julianna's POV I got into my room, turned on the light, and jumped on the bed without changing out my outfit. Staring at the ceiling, I began to replay today's events– the dinner party, the exposure to the media, and the discomfort I felt. I didn't belong in a world where wealth and power defined everything, I can't be in a world where Ethan rules. For a moment, I felt like I'm losing myself which makes me feel pathetic.Closing my eyes, I drifted into sleep with the lights still on.***I found myself in the middle of a street, hands stained with blood, my breath caught in my throat as I stared at the figure lying on the ground–my mum.“Mum…” I choked, as tears flooded my eyes.“Julia…nna…” she croaked as she trembled in pain.“Mum,” please don't talk. You're losing so much blood… someone helps!” my voice cracked as I looked desperately at the car that had hit her. The glass was tinted, and the driver was still inside. I ran to the car, banging on the glass desperately.
Chapter 18Ethan's POVWhat are you doing here? I asked, my voice cold as I clenched my fists, trying to keep my composure.Raphael leaned casually against the table, his grin was as annoying as ever. ‘’Show some respect, I’m your brother,’’ he said, wearing his sunglasses as if the dinner wasn’t already ruined by his presence. ‘’It would be surprising if I were left out of this dinner.’’‘’You weren’t invited,’’ I replied curtly. His grin widened, and he turned to Julianna, who stood silently beside me, her eyes looking between us. ‘’Nice ring for such nice fingers,’’ he said as he tried to touch her hands which Julianna flung away subtly with a silent hiss.‘’Thanks,’’ Julianna replied tightly, her polite smile doing little to mask how uncomfortable she felt. She glanced at me briefly before focusing on Raphael, her posture awkward.‘’You have a unique..taste, Ethan, Raphael winked as he stared at our joint hands.I moved a little bit closer to him as he stared at me with entertain
Ethan's POV“Prepare for the dinner bouquet tonight.” I said then hung up before she could think of saying another word and stared at the headlines again. A small smirk at the corners of my lips. My phone buzzed, pulling me out of my thoughts. I answered it, already knowing who it was. “Who is the lady?!”Annabel screamed so loudly which made me wince and pulled the phone away from my ear.“Don't tell me that's the reason you called?’’ I asked, my voice laced with irritation.“Of course,...you’ve been sehen with women before, but definitely not like this.Who's she? Dad’s also curious– he had to cut his trip short because of the rumors.”I sighed and let the silence lingered.“Ethan? Are you still there?” she asked, her voice softer now, cautious. “Yes, I'm here,” I said, clearing my throat. “Annabel, the news isn't something to worry about. It's not just a rumor.”She went silent for a while, making me get irritated every passing second.“Since there's clearly nothing meaningful
