Chapter 001
The Engagement Party
Amara’s POV
Tonight was in everywhere as planned supposed to be my night, the very night my dreams would come true. Yet, standing like a statue in the middle of the Golden Crown Hotel’s grand ballroom, I won't be exerggerating that I felt nothing but like a guest at my own engagement party.
The well lited room was busy, way too busy with chatter, laughter, and the occasional clink of expensive champagne glasses. The atmosphere was to say the least beyond friendly, a perfect moment just for the lavish celebration for the wealthy elites of Lakeshore City. My mother had in her over ambitious and overbearing manner, made sure every detail screamed perfection.
“Amara, try for once to hold your head high. You have the look of someone about to faint any moment,” Mama hissed furiously as she passed me by, though her face was pinched in a perfect forced smile.
“Yes, Mama,” I mumbled almost to myself, adjusting the expensive pearl necklace she insisted I wear.
Victor stood handsomely across the room, dutifully and skillfully talking animatedly with a group of over serious businessmen. He looked everly perfect, I lack words to describe how tall, handsome, confident he looked. He's with no doubt, the very man every woman wanted. And yet, if with me finally getting him, the very moment when his eyes finally met mine, I felt nothing, not even a rush of adrenaline, just a cold detachment. He smiled sweetly, but it wasn’t for me.
“Victor,” I called softly as I made my way toward him slowly.
“Amara,” he said, his tone steady and polite, but obviously distant. “You look... look nice.”
Nice. That was it? Nothing more. Just nice?
I swallowed my disappointment in a hurry and nodded to him. “Thank you.”
The rest of the evening event quickly passed in a blur. Guests came and went, offering hollow and empty congratulations. Mama in her usual manner, hovered around, ensuring everyone knew this engagement was a match made in socialite heaven. And then, not forgetting someone important; there was the perfect daughter, Sisi.
Sisi, everly gorgeous was dressed in her fiery red dress, was as usual the center of attention. She effortlessly flitted from group to group, her laugh loud, vibrantly enchoing everywhere, and her smile she ensured was brighter than the chandeliers. She was just in a likable way, the kind of woman who commanded attention without doing much. I for some reasons, envied her for that somehow.
But tonight, something if not everything felt totally off.
I finally got what I was looking forward to; a moment of peace on the balcony, the cool night air soothing my tired nerves. The chaotic laughter and music from the engagement party felt distant, like I wasn’t the reason for the gathering, like I wasn't really part of it.
“You don’t in anyway look like someone who just got engaged to the love of her life.”
I wasn't prepared for that which made me jump out of my skin, turning to see Sisi standing behind me, a glass of expensive champagne in hand. Her lips curled harshly into a small smirk, but her eyes sparkled with something way darker.
“Sisi,” I said, my voice wary. “What brought your gorgeous self here?”
“Checking on you, ensuring you are okay, dear sister of course. You seem... tensed,” she replied, leaning against the railing for comfort.
“I’m very fine,” I lied through my teeth.
“Fine,” she repeated, her tone mimicking me in a mocking in a way. “Well, you should be, at least just for now. You have no reason to be sad because you're marrying Victor Graham, the golden boy of Lakeshore, don't sleep on that. Every woman in this city would kill to be in your shoes this moment.”
There was something in the way she narrated it, something that made my skin crawl out of its place.
“Sisi, if you have something bottled up to say, just say it,” I snapped, tired of her boring games.
Her smirk widened on hearing that. “You should know it's no more news that you don’t deserve him, Amara. You’re too... plain for his kind of mab. Too ordinary. Victor needs someone who can perfectly match his shine. And that should be someone like me.”
I stared at her, stunned at her speech. “What exactly are you talking about now?”
“You’ll see,” she said cryptically, brushing past, but not without pushing me in an angry manner. Her sinister laughter echoing mischievously as she disappeared back into the ballroom.
As I finally returned to the unwelcoming party, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was definitely wrong. Sisi’s harsh words played repeatedly in my mind, but before I could make sense of them, Victor from nowhere grabbed my hand.
“Perfect time to cut the engagement cake,” he said.
The cake cutting ceremony somehow passed without any funny incident, but I felt like I was moving through a dangerous dream, or even a nightmare. By then, I searched through the room, and Sisi was nowhere to be seen, and unease settled in my chest like a stone.
Hours later, completely exhausted and drained of the remaining strength in me, I told Mama I needed few hours of rest. She barely acknowledged me or my needs as she was too busy entertaining her guests. I slipped away without warning, following the directions the hotel staff had given me to a reserved room I know nothing of.
But on entering the room, something felt... wrong, totally different.
The lights were now dim, and the air was heavy and suffocating with the scent of alcohol. A man sat slouched on the bed, his shirt unbuttoned, and his head hanging somehow low.
“Excuse me...” I began, but he lifted his head, and that very minute, the words died on my lips.
His piercing, charming gray eyes locked onto mine, and my blood immediately ran cold.
“I think you might have entered the wrong room,” I stammered, stepping back toward the door.
“Wait,” he said, his voice deep and rough, but somehow sweet. He stood, swaying slightly, and I froze.
Who exactly is yhis man? Why is he here?
Before I could think and move out a bit, the door slammed shut behind me.
Chapter 20The DNA DeceptionDamian’s POV"You're staring," Amara said, raising her eyebrows at me as she scooped another bite of scrambled eggs into her mouth.I blinked, looking away quickly, feeling like I’d just been caught doing something criminal. “Sorry. Just… thinking.”She gave a soft chuckle and leaned back against the headboard. “Thinking? About what? How bad your takeout dinner’s going to be?”I smirked. “I happen to be very skilled at choosing the best takeout in the city, thank you very much.”“Mmmh,” she hummed, clearly not convinced. “We’ll see.”It felt easy too easy. Sitting there with her, laughing, sharing a plate of now-cold breakfast, I almost believed the chaos around us had finally paused.Almost.Because deep down, there was a storm brewing. I could feel it an itch beneath my skin I couldn’t shake. And just as I opened my mouth to say something else, maybe something stupid like “You’re beautiful when you laugh,” my phone buzzed violently on the nightstand.“Le
Chapter 19Damian's POV Breakfast in Bed The tray for no reason felt heavier in my hands than it should have been in the first place. Toast, scrambled eggs, and even as went as far as squeezing freshly made orange juice, though simple to some people but thoughtful. I wasn’t even sure why my palms felt clammy. It was not a big deal as I see it, just a breakfast, not a diamond ring for proposal. Yet, the more I approached her room, my heart pounded endlessly like I was about to step into a hostile boardroom.I stood like a statue at the door for a moment, doing my best to steady my hitched breath. The events of the past couple of days had left me restless, completely torn between my own stubborn pride and the undeniable pull I recently developed toward Amara. I knew she deserved more than the cold indifference I am dishing out, especially after everything I had put her through. It was of course worst than what she experiences with her family.Pushing the door open, it was a great sigh
Change 18Burning Desire Damian’s POVI walked slowly into the penthouse, exhaustion heavy on me like a great cloak. The day had been inconsiderably brutal...back-to-back compulsory meetings, endless negotiations, and of course, the usual chaos that comes from running a billion-dollar empire. But none of that could be compared to the trouble that had been brewing intensively inside me for weeks. As I bent to set my briefcase down and get my tie loosened, I quickly glanced around the living room. It was strangely quiet, too quiet, the kind of silence that made my thoughts louder than it should be. Pouring myself rather a glass of whiskey to calm my nerves, I caught movement from the corner of my eye. I spurned around and saw her...Amara...standing just on the balcony. The sliding doors were left ajar, and the soft menacing glow of the city lights incredibly framed her silhouette like a painting. She looked so... so... so ethereal. Her loose soft curls danced gently to the sound of th
Chapter 17Uninvited Guest 2Amara’s POVThe knocking at the door was loud and persistent, jolting me from my deep thoughts. I sighed, wondering who could be so impatient. Damian wasn’t home, and I was grateful for the rare peace. I don't long to seeing him in the evenings as before, all I wanted was to stay far away from his lustful and penetrating eyes, but with cold and distant exterior. “Hold on!” I called, standing up and heading to the door. When I opened it, my heart nearly stopped.Victor.He stood there, looking as polished as ever in a crisp navy suit, his jaw tight with barely suppressed anger. His eyes locked on mine, piercing and accusing. He was the least person I expected to see at my doorpost.“Victor,” I said, my voice a mix of surprise and dread. “What are you doing here?”He pushed past me without waiting for an invitation. “We need to talk.”I shut the door, already feeling the headache forming. “Victor, this isn’t the time...”“Oh, it’s the perfect time, Amara,”
Chapter 16Uninvited Guest Amara's POVThe morning sunlight streamed slowly through the windows, illuminating Damian’s penthouse beautifully. Everything about his luxurious home screamed wealth...from the sleek furniture to the glass floors that seemed to gleam effortlessly. But as I sipped my tea at the dining table, my mind wasn’t on the luxury surrounding me at the moment. It was all on Sisi. She had been over the last two days, practically oozing sweetness and affection. It made my skin crawl in anger. I wasn’t stupid. Sisi didn’t change overnight, and her sudden interest in "rebuilding our sisterhood" was as suspicious as it was irritating. I could see through her act, and to be honest, she's doing a great job.The sound of Damian’s footsteps was what pulled me from my thoughts. He walked into the room, dressed in a tailored gray suit that fit him like a second skin. He looked effortlessly perfect as money was speaking, like he owned the world—and in many ways, he did. “Morning
Chapter 15I Came to TalkAmara's POVI stood at the door, watching as Sisi stepped inside, her bright smile plastered on her face, like she had somehow been transformed overnight. She was acting like a completely different person, and I wasn’t buying it. Not even for a second.“Sisi?” My voice was cautious, laced with suspicion. “What’s all this about?”She stepped into the penthouse, gliding past me with an air of confidence. “I came to talk,” she said, her tone light and breezy. “I figured it’s time we put all this nonsense behind us.”I raised an eyebrow, my mind immediately going on high alert. Nonsense? I wasn’t sure what she was referring to, but I had a feeling I knew where this was headed. “What nonsense?”“The fighting,” she said, her words soft and apologetic. “I’ve been so petty, Amara. I let my jealousy get the best of me. I know I’ve said things I shouldn’t have, but I don’t want to keep fighting anymore. I want to make things right between us.”I folded my arms, eyeing
