LOGINSHADOW'S IN THE GREY CYCLE;
The sharp glow of headlights cut through the dim parking garage as I turn slowly.
Marcus step out of the black car, the door shutting behind him with a quiet but heavy thud. The light from the ceiling lamps traces the sharp lines of his face as he walks toward me.
His eyes moves briefly to the direction of the man pointing who just left then back to me.
“What are you doing here?” he ask calmly.
I tilt my head slightly, as if confuse by the question. “Going to my car.”
Marcus’s gaze hardens.
“That’s not what I meant.” He stops a few steps away from me. “Why were you eavesdropping on that man’s conversation?”
For a moment, the air between us grow still.
I didn’t panic. Didn’t blink. I simply met his gaze with a serious expression.
“I dropped my bracelet,” i said evenly. “I thought I heard someone nearby.”
My lie comes smoothly. Effortlessly. Then i ask, my voice steady, “Have you been here long?”
Marcus watch me carefully before answering. “No.”
He slips his hands into his pockets. “I just arrived. I was waiting for you.”
I study his face for a brief moment, searching for anything unusual. But Marcus looks completely compose.
Then he add casually. “That man you were listening to…”
My eyes flickers slightly.
Marcus continues. “He used to work for our family, my mother's personal driver. Even before I was born.”
My lips curves faintly. Interesting… Very interesting.
“So you know him,” i said calmly.
Marcus nod once.
“But that’s not what concerns me.”
His expression changes now. Colder. More dangerous.
“What concerns me,” he said slowly, “is why you embarrassed my mother at the dinner.”
I didn’t move.
The memory of the dinner with the Blackwood's lingers clearly in my mind.
Marcus steps closer. “You made her look like a fool in her own house.” His voice drops. “Was that intentional?”
I look up at him, my expression is calm… Too calm.
“Yes.” The answer comes without hesitation.
Marcus’s jaw tightens.
I continue softly, “Your mother offered me a gift meant for women she believes won’t last beside you.” My gaze sharpeners slightly. “ But I simply returned it.”
Marcus’s eyes darkens. “You think you're now untouchable.”
I smile faintly.
“No.” I pause. “I think I’m honest.”
Marcus laughs bitterly. “You humiliated her.”
My voice drops colder. “She tried to test me.”
Silence stretch between us, then i add quietly, “And I passed.”
That is when Marcus lost his patience. His anger snaps like a thread pull too tight.
“How dare you,” he said harshly.
Suddenly— His hand lift. For a split second— Time freeze.
I didn’t move…Didn't flinch. Because the moment his hand rise into the air— A memory stricks me like lightning.
This place… This exact parking space. In my first life… This was where Marcus had raised his hand against me for the very first time.
The beginning of everything that destroyed me, but before his hand could move any further - A strong grip catch his wrist midair.
Marcus freeze.
Evan stand behind him, his fingers locks tightly around Marcus’s arm.
“Don’t,” Evan said coldly.
The tension in the air thickens. Marcus slowly turn his head toward him but Evan’s expression is calm—but his grip is unyielding.
I watch the scene silently.
My eyes lingers on Marcus’s raised hand for a brief moment then i turn without a word and walk toward the black rolls Royce.
Evan releases Marcus’s wrist and follows me immediately.
Marcus remain standing there. Shock. Watching me leave as if something has just slip out of his control.
Inside the car, the engine starts.
The parking garage lights reflects across the windshield as i stare ahead.
Evan glance at me carefully. “You okay?”
I didn’t answer immediately, my mind is moving too quickly. Calculating. Rearranging.
Finally, i speak. My voice is calm. “Evan.”
“Yes?”
My eyes darkens slightly. “That single action tonight…” I pause. “…might be enough for me to destroy Marcus Blackwood for good.”
Silence fills the car.
“ Ms. Carter,” Evan finally said, “You're enemies are organized. Not just Judy and Marcus. They have support. A network.”
I raise an eyebrow. “Support? Who?”
“Grey cycle,” he said.
I freeze slightly. Not with fear. Curiosity sharpening.
“The grey cycle?” I repeat.
Evan nods. “They're private financiers invisible investors. Some say they back families to control the entire industries without public scrutiny. And Marcus… he has them. They want all the Carter empires.”
I absorbed it. My pulse steady, mind racing.
The grey cycle unseen, untouchable, deadly precise.
“They've been watching for years,” Evan continues careful. Strategic. “They planted allies with your own company - just waiting for weakness.”
My lips curves faintly. “As always they think I am still the girl they could scare with whispers. But am not her anymore.”
…..
The first meeting with the grey cycle’s influence comes in the form of a new executive, polite, smiling, overly helpful.
He introduce himself as Rowland grey, claiming to represent a “consulting group with international oversight.”
I study him quietly.
“What do you need, Mr grey?” I ask calmly.
“Nothing,” he said, his voice is soft. “Just a partnership.”
My eyes narrows.”Partnership in what?”
“The growth of Carter Holdings. And also your… inside business .”
I tilt my head. “ Funny. My inside business isn't open for partnerships.”
Simon's smile falters. “Ah… then perhaps guidance?”
“I don't require guidance,” I said evenly. “Only loyalty, competence, and respect. You may leave if you cannot provide those.”
He hesitate, then bows slightly. “Very well. I will consult with my… team.”
I watch him leave.
“You're lucky he didn't push,” Evan said quietly.
“I don't fear him,”I said. “I fear what happens if I do not know everything.”
The afternoon has been unusually quite… Too quiet. I sit behind the desk, reviewing a slack of documents Evan has place earlier. Sunlight filters through the tall glass window of my office, casting long shadow's across the polish floor.
My pen move slowly across the page.
Sign… Flip. Sign again…
Everything looks normal.
A soft knock breaks the stillness.
“Come in,” I said without looking up.
The door open and my assistant step inside, holding a medium-size black box.
“There's a delivery for you, Ms Carter.”
My pen pause mid- signature. “A delivery?”
“Yes, it just arrive. No sender listed.”
That alone is enough to make me lift my eyes. “No sender?” I repeat calmly.
My assistant shakes her head and place the box on the desk.
“It was brought by a courier, but he left immediately.”
I study the package.
The box is simple. Black. Matle. No labels. No company logo. Just my name type nearly on a small white sticker: AMANDA CARTER.
Nothing else... My assistant hesitate. “Should I have a security check it first?”
I lean back in my chair slightly, my fingers taps once against the desk as I think.
Then i shake my head. “No”
My assistant nod and quietly leave the office. The door click shut.
Now it is just me… And the box.
SOME KINDNESS IS SHARPER THAN A BLADE;In my first life - this same woman had humiliated me endlessly.Too poor in spirit. Too soft. Too weak in faith. SOME INVITATIONS ARE NOT MEANT TO HONOR YOU - ONLY TO MEASURE YOU;On the bed is a single black envelope with no name written on it. My pulse did not race. I step forward and pick it up.Inside is one photograph. My fingers tightens. It is a picture of me from earlier that day, right before the gunshot. Taken from behind. Close enough to see the fabric of my suit.Close enough to know - Whoever sent it has been watching.
