Esmeralda Pov

With nowhere specific to go until my shift, i headed toward the morgue where my mother lay cold. The building that reminded me of everything I was trying not to think about.

At the front desk, the receptionist looked up and offered me the same sympathetic smile she always did.

I hated that smile. Not because she meant any harm, but because it reminded me why I kept coming here.

"Good afternoon, Miss Esmeralda."

"Good afternoon. I'd like to pay this month's morgue f*e... and next month's as well."

She nodded gently before typing into her computer. A moment later, she slid the invoice toward me.

I stared at the total before opening my purse. My fingers tightened over the last few bills before I handed them over. Almost everything I'd earned from two straight days of double shifts disappeared in an instant.

"There you go." She stamped the receipt before handing it back to me. "Payment received."

"Thank you."

I slipped the paper into my bag and glanced inside my empty purse. "I just have to work hard to survive. No biggie," I muttered to myself.

"Miss Esmeralda?" I looked up. "Have you been able to make any arrangements with the funeral home yet?”

"Not yet," I whispered.

"There isn't any pressure from us. I just thought I'd ask."

"I know." I managed a weak smile. "I'm taking it one step at a time."

She smiled softly. "I'm sure your mother would already be proud of how hard you're trying."

That almost broke me. I thanked her quickly before hurrying outside.

Once on the sidewalk, I blinked several times, refusing to cry. Now was not the time or place to shed tears. Shortly after, my eyes darted to my wristwatch.

It was 5:02 p.m. My eyes widened.

"Oh no..." I was late.

By the time I reached the Meridian Event Hall, luxury cars already filled the long driveway. Guests dressed in designer gowns and expensive suits walked toward the grand entrance as paparazzi snapped endless photos.

It was my first time working at this venue, so I had no idea where the staff entrance was. I stood near the side walkway, feeling completely lost.

"Psst! Esmeralda!”

I spun around to see Mulan standing by a narrow service door, waving frantically while clutching a neatly folded waitress uniform. The moment I reached her, she smacked my arm.

"Ow!"

"Do you know what time it is?" she snapped under her breath.

"I know..."

"No, you don't.” She narrowed her eyes. "Do you know how many times the supervisor has asked me where you were?"

“Sorry…” I winced, imagining the pickle she had been put in because of me.

"I may have told him you were stuck in traffic." She rolled her eyes.

"I don't even own a car," I chuckled.

"I know." She sighed dramatically. "So then I told him your dog had emergency surgery."

"I don't have a dog.” I laughed out loud.

"I know that too."

I burst into laughter, and she pointed her well-polished nails at me. "Don't you dare laugh. By the fourth excuse, I started believing my own lies."

"I'm sorry."

"You should be." She shoved the folded uniform into my arms. "You're lucky I like you."

"I love you too," I retorted.

"You owe me tomorrow's dinner.”

"I'll buy you two."

"Three."

"Fine."

"And dessert."

I groaned dramatically. "That's robbery in broad daylight."

She smirked. “I learned from the best.”

I laughed, blew her an exaggerated kiss, and hugged the uniform to my chest. "You are literally my favorite person."

"I know," she replied proudly. "Now go change before I change my mind and let the supervisor eat you alive."

"Yes, boss!" I called out, turning to hurry down the corridor toward the changing rooms.

As I rounded the corner, I nearly collided with a broad chest. I looked up, and my heart skipped a beat.

It was him. My one-night stand.

Tonight, I promised myself, I was going to stay as far away from him as humanly possible. I already had a growing list of people to avoid: Victor, Klaus, and now… him.

With one last glimpse of his annoyingly handsome face, I darted past him and slipped into the ladies' changing room.

The fitted uniform slid on easily enough, but the back zipper refused to cooperate.

"Oh, come on…” I twisted my arm awkwardly behind my back and yanked, but nothing worked. "You've got to be kidding me," I muttered under my breath with a nervous laugh. "I wore you two days ago!"

Still speaking to myself, the bathroom door clicked open behind me, and relief flooded through my body.

Talk about perfect timing.

Without turning around, I gathered my hair over one shoulder and held the back of the dress together with one hand.

"Mulan, can you help me with this zipper?” I said, with a sheepish laugh. “I think it's stuck.”

A deep, velvety male voice answered from directly behind me:

"With pleasure.”

Kane’s POV After she left, Adrian strolled further into the office, arrogantly glaring around the room before speaking.“Is this what she called an important meeting? These are Important guests?” He snorted, glancing around the room at my friends. “Crazy woman.”“What disrespect!” Albert stood up, but I raised a hand to stop him.“State your case and leave, Adrian,” I said immediately, while Jayson, Ethan, and Albert looked seriously offended on my behalf. All I could see as I looked at his entitled face was him and Claudia defiling my matrimonial bed and making jest of my supposed infertility. I felt a thick vein pop up in my neck.“Sure…” Adrian held up his hands in mock surrender, “I will gladly leave when you explain what this rubbish is all about!” He threw two files on my table with full force.I didn't have to read them to know it was his dismissal notice as Director of Procurement and Sales, alongside his frozen account reports.“Oh! I have been expecting you,” I said nonchal

Kane’s POV To say I was warmly welcomed would be an understatement. Jayson, Ethan, and Albert, who had just returned from his medical NGO work in Africa, had practically escorted me from the airport straight to my LA office.‘What do they want now?’ I wondered. At the office, Mrs Hawkins entertained us with refreshments, as ordered by Jayson, who wouldn't even look at me while Ethan and Albert flashed me their death glares. For a split second, silence filled the room before Albert finally spoke.“Kane, seriously? After everything that we've said and warned you of?” “I don't understand.” I glanced at Jayson. “Okay, someone needs to tell me what's going on, and why are you three looking at me like I've committed a crime?”“Bro….” Jayson started, but was shut down by Ethan, who threw a half-eaten croissant at him.“This is not a laughing matter.” Ethan drank his wine and slammed it on the table. “You know, sooner or later, we'd have to eject you from our brotherhood…. Now I see the rea

Esmeralda’s POVSitting in the executive office, I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out.Mulan's face flashed in my mind, followed by the image of the burly man in the hallway. Mulan had only tried to help a friend in desperate need. If I confessed now, not only would Mulan lose her job, but I would also face dangerous retaliation from the man downstairs.“I... I...” I stammered under Jayson's watchful, sharp gaze."Take your time," Jayson offered, his tone surprisingly patient.I glanced around the room as thoughts panicked in my head. Jump out the window? I was on the fifth floor, so that was out of the question. Tell the truth? That too felt dangerous. Before I could formulate an answer, the rich smell of warm bacon and fresh pastry dough wafted up through the ventilation shafts from the main kitchen.Without warning, a sharp wave of nausea surged up my throat."I am so sorry, sir." I pressed a hand over my mouth, jumping out of the chair. "I need to use the restroom i

Esmeralda’s POVTwo days had passed, and Mulan and I hadn't said a single word about what transpired that night. It was as if the incident had been swept under the rug.We slipped right back into our normal routine. Our usual banter, sharing of meals, and the easy flow of conversation. I suppose it was better that way. Ever since that night, Klaus had left and hadn't returned, which was the only thing that truly mattered.“I'm sorry,” Mulan's voice gently pulled me out of my thoughts as she tapped my shoulder. “About that night... about Klaus,” she said softly. We were on the morning shift, wiping down tables before the evening opening.“Hmm... I thought we had a telepathic agreement never to speak of it again.” I kept scrubbing the wooden surface.“What?” She looked utterly baffled until I offered her a slight smirk, making her relax. “Ah... sorry I had to break the rule.”“Mulan... it's okay,” I assured her, holding her gaze. “I don't hold it against you. Besides, I'm fine. I've al

Kane’s POV“Are you sure you want to do this? No pressure...”It was 8:00 PM, and we were sitting in the back of a luxury limousine idling outside one of Italy’s most exclusive venues. Josephine had been invited as a guest of honor for a high-fashion showcase packed with international press, celebrities, and elite investors.“I'm sure,” I replied, sitting still as she adjusted my tie.“There,” she smiled, though hesitation lingered in her eyes. “You know the press is going to assume we're an item, right?”“Let them assume whatever they want. We're old friends supporting each other. Let them gossip.”She frowned slightly, glancing at the flashing camera lights reflecting off the tinted windows. “That sounds recklessly open coming from you.”“I don't care,” I said coldly. “I do what I want.”Tonight was about freedom and taking back control. Josephine didn't know the full story, but showing up on my own terms felt liberating. The driver opened the door, and Josephine slipped her arm thr

Kane’s POVThe moment I stepped into the private dining room at Piazza Navona, I knew this meeting was going to be an uphill battle.Chairman Alistair Voss sat at the far end of the long table. His silver hair was combed back flawlessly, his expression guarded and entirely devoid of emotion. He didn't even look up when I walked in.I steeled myself for the confrontation.“You're late,” he said flatly, glancing at his watch.“I arrived three minutes before our scheduled time.”“And yet I have been sitting here waiting for you. Do you understand what time means in our industry, Mr. Ravello?”I pulled out the leather chair opposite him and sat down. “Then I apologize for wasting three minutes of your time.”His lips twitched, not into a smile, but a subtle show of amusement.“Still arrogant, I see. The years haven't changed you.”“I've been called worse.”“I imagine you have.”The Voss family had dominated the steel sector for generations, building an undisputed reputation for high-grade
