“Hey, um, could you spare me another fifteen minutes? I just need to wrap this up real quick and we will be good to go,” Rudney said. But Lily checked the time again; if she waited on Rudney, she would not be able to catch her brother’s baseball practice, and it would really break his heart. “Honestly, Rudney, it’s fine. We could always do this tomorrow. You don’t have to walk me to the bus station every freaking evening,” Lily tried to dissuade Rudney. The look on his face indicated that he did not want Lily to be on her own. “I could be really fast,” Rudney pressed. “Sorry!” Lily said stubbornly as she opened the door to the shop and walked into the street. She was not a baby that needed babysitting, and one day, she hoped that Rudney would understand that. Lily walked towards the bus station, whistling and humming to herself. If she got to the bus station in time, she might even see her brother before his game began. On the other side of the road, a man with an eye patch on one eye trailed Lucy without her knowledge. He had a phone glued to his ear. “Yes boss, we just found her. She is just like her,” he said into the phone while still watching and following Lily. “Get her to us right now, and do so discreetly,” the thick voice on the other end of the phone told the man. Lily checked her wristwatch again; three more minutes and she would be at the bus station, but as she turned towards the alley and walked alone, a sack came over her head in a swift second. Lily tried to struggle free, but it was futile as she slipped into unconsciousness almost immediately. An hour later, Lily woke up in a spacious and luxurious living room. Agitated and confused, she turned around quickly, and realized that there were other people, strange faces in the room with her as well. “Where am I? What am I doing here? How did I get here?” Lily said in fear. Before she could even get an answer, she leaped to her feet and faced the door, but the man who took her stood close to the door, and showed Lily a revolver. Lily paused in her tracks. “What is going on here?” Lily asked with shaky breath. “Well, now that you are awake and back to your senses, that question can be answered,” the man who ordered that she should be taken, Don Grander spoke in a husky tone. “You have been kidnapped,” Emily Torres, the only woman in the room informed Lily bluntly. “Come on, Em, there is no need to be so blunt. We want her to get a hang of everything slowly, otherwise she would freak out and fuck things up,” Don Grander gently scolded Emily. “But we do not have the time, Don! In less than a few hours, we should be presenting her, and here you are talking about grasping things slowly!” Emily stubbornly and impatiently countered. “What is going on here?” Lily blinked in confusion. The conversation these strangers were having in front of her was scaring her to her bones. “Why was I kidnapped? What presentation are you talking about?” Lily asked frantically. Her heart thundered against her ribs as she felt danger looming, and her eyes kept taking quick glances at the revolver with the one-eyed man. Lily did not need to be told that he was the one who kidnapped her. “As from this moment,” Don started, deciding to go straight to the point, “You are no longer Lily Bashwood, but my daughter, Ashley Grander, and in less than fifteen hours, you will be saying ‘I Do’ to Christopher Bridger as his bride,” Don revealed slowly. “Hell no! I will not impersonate anyone!” Lily vehemently disagreed, but before she could even finish voicing out her disagreement, the one-eyed man raised the revolver, reminding her of where she was. Lily swallowed hard, fear and dread engulfing her completely. Instantly, the large TV in the living room came on. Emily who was holding the remote turned it on, and the face of a young girl was displayed on the screen. Lily stared at the image on the TV, stupefied. If she wasn’t sure about her birth, she would have sworn that she was staring at her twin sister, well, except for the hair color. “She even has my eyes,” Lily said in a rasped breath. “But why am I impersonating her?” Lily turned to her abductors and asked. “Because she is dead. She died a few hours ago, and she is supposed to walk down the aisle tomorrow morning,” Don explained. Lily shook her head. “I cannot impersonate a dead person,” Lily said as tears welled up in her eyes. “Yes, you will. I am your father from henceforth, and she, Emily, is your sweet and loving stepmother. You have only a few hours to get into Ashley’s character, okay?” Don said. Lily began to weep. “You cannot do this to me. I have a family and a life already, please let me go!” Lily begged. “Uh, working as a server at a wine shop is not a life, darling,” Emily said in irritation. “And we are certain that Joe will be just fine if you play by the rules.” Lily looked at them in shock. It was obvious they knew everything about her. She was doomed! “Listen, this is just a marriage contract of one year. Play along and by this time next year, you are a free woman. Plus, we are willing to be a little generous to you in addition to the contract. That way, you can easily pay for Joe’s baseball practices without the hassles,” Don said with a glint of dread in his eyes. Lily dared to ask, “And if I refuse?” “Your only family, Joe would be kidnapped just as easily as we were able to get you, he will be killed and his body will be sent to you as a souvenir,” Don threatened. Lily knew it was not an empty threat. With both resolve and regret, Lily asked, “What do you need me to do?”Aria had always prided herself on composure. No matter the situation, she maintained control, refusing to let her emotions cloud her judgment. But tonight, as she sat in Heathen’s office, that control felt precariously close to slipping. The tension in the room was palpable, charged with the weight of their earlier exchange and the shadow of Vanessa’s presence lingering in the air. Heathen’s piercing gaze, however, was what truly unraveled her. “You’re staring,” Aria said without looking up from her laptop, her tone clipped. “Am I?” Heathen replied, leaning casually against the edge of his desk. His sleeves were still rolled up, revealing strong forearms, and his tie hung loosely around his neck, giving him an air of effortless authority. “Yes.” She finally glanced up, meeting his eyes. “Don’t you have something better to do?” He smirked, the corner of his mouth quirking up in a way that made her stomach flip. “I’m working. Observing my partner is part of the job.” “Partner
The following day, Aria woke with a strange mix of determination and unease. The events of the yesterday gala still lingered in her mind, and Heathen's intense promise to face Marcus together replayed in her thoughts. She dressed in a sleek navy-blue blouse tucked into high waisted black pants, her demeanor as sharp as her outfit. Heathen had called an emergency meeting with his top advisors, and she knew Vanessa would be there, ready to start the trouble.Arriving at King Enterprises, Aria stepped out of the elevator into the conference room. Vanessa was already there, sitting next to Heathen, her presence in a deliberate and obvious statement. Her black dress hugged her figure perfectly, and her lips curled into a taunting smile as Aria entered.“Oh, Aria,” Vanessa cooed, her tone dripping with mock sweetness. “You’re looking... efficient today.”Aria’s polite smile didn’t waver. “Efficiency gets things done, Vanessa. You should try it sometime.”Vanessa’s eyes narrowed for a frac
Aria straightened her head to examine the luxurious ballroom dancing, where visitors chatted underneath shining lights. The chatter of discussion and the clinking of champagne glasses filled the air, but she couldn't shake the burning feeling of being observed.Heathen's hand lay soothingly on her lower back, providing an affectionate signal of his being present. She sneaked a look at him. Everyone in the room admired his strong jawline, sharp gaze, and dominant presence. But she could feel the workload underneath his composed cool skin.“Stay close,” he murmured softly near her ears, his lips barely moving.“I’m not going anywhere,” Aria replied softly, tilting her head slightly to meet his sharp gaze. The tenderness in his eyes sparkled for a second before he led her to a group of powerful business figures. They exchanged nice greetings, and their conversations focused on current market conditions and future collaborations. While Heathen dominated the discussion ahead, Aria's th
Aria stood in the far corner of an elegant and sleek boardroom at King Enterprises as the early morning sun cast golden waves across the towering buildings of the city. The comforting warmth of Heathen's words from the previous evening still remained in her thoughts, but right now, the real world requested her complete concentration. Her head throbbed with unresolved thoughts about Marcus's plans and the hanging memory of Vanessa's unpleasant behavior.Heathen stepped in very soon later, his flawless suit highlighting his powerful and strong personality. His icy composure dominated the atmosphere, and Aria felt reassured for just a split second. However, when his attention caught hers, a flash of worry flashed on his face. "Did you even fall asleep?" Heathen inquired, his voice pitched so low that only she could hear. She tried to think of an excuse but Heathens intense glare was enough to make all her thoughts about making an excuse vanish.Aria grinned softly while enjoying her
Aria found herself lost in a pile of duties at King Enterprises. Her desk was overflowing with documents, plans, and business discussions, but her mind was far away lost in thoughts of someone else. Marcus' planned threats was another frustration she was dealing with, the danger that had followed them yesterday, and, most importantly, Heathen's change in personality and how he protects and trust her all replayed out in her head like a continuous loop. She felt his power, his stubbornness, and, behind it all, an unsaid intimacy that kept her chest warm throughout the chaos that followed both of them. Now, seated under the bright office lights, she shook her head, attempting to clear up the fuzz in her head because at this point it was getting annoying. This was not a moment for interruptions. There was too much at threat and risk, and her ability to stay focused was essential to the project's progress and, maybe, their own safety. As she was concentrated on her project a loud pie
The following week passed in a flurry of activity and work, but the project’s progress brought a sense of accomplishment to everyone involved. Aria and Heathen had managed to build and improve operations, gaining the trust of King Enterprises’ board and employees. However, they knew the war wasn’t over. Marcus might have backed down for a bit now, but his threat lingered like a shadow over their every move because he won’t back down easily. Late evening in following week, Aria sat in her office, reviewing the revised project timeline and material. Her desk was filled with endless blueprints, contracts, and a steaming cup of hot coffee she had barely touched. The faint chit chatter of the office cleaning staff echoed in the distance, but otherwise, the whole floor was silent. A knock at the door broke her focus and she came out of her trance. “Come in,” she called, her voice filled with fatigue and tiredness. Heathen stepped inside, his undeniable presence filling the room. He wa
