It felt like hours when in reality; it had only been five minutes. The clock was ticking. Shaving off the five minutes I’d been ogling this metal door, I only got twenty-five left before the guards swept the basement for their rounds.
A decision must be made.
There was a thick tension in the mansion since they captured Rylee Martinelli, wife of the Italian mafia underboss. I understood why everyone was on edge.
For months, we had been preparing for this day. Tony Dominguez, a well-decorated FBI agent, came into my Paris apartment in October last year and told me a sickening tale of my past. Growing up, I had been asking my mother who my biological father was, and Tony answered that question for me.
Markus Martinelli, the Italian mafia don, impregnated my mom right after his wife died. ‘It was one night of weakness,’ mom said when I confronted her about the truth. She kept my existence a secret from him. He was a dangerous man. She said he’d marry me out to another mafia family for his own gain. ‘Daughters for the mafia dons have only one purpose, Benny. To strengthen their mafia,’ that’s mom’s exact words.
Since then, Tony has kept us safe here in his mansion in Granada, Spain.
Instead of keeping my distance from the prisoner, I unlocked the metal door and slipped inside her holding cell, praying that curiosity wouldn’t cost me my life.
I locked eyes with the most stunning woman I had ever seen. She made that black shirt and jeans look like a steal from a magazine cover. Her hair, a mess of cinnamon curls, framed her soft jaws and heart-shaped face. Sitting in the bunker, she stared at me with melted honey-colored eyes.
Keeping the door slightly ajar, I mustered the strength to speak first, hoping to hide the fear quaking inside me. “You are Klaus Martinelli’s wife.”
“You are his sister,” she stated in a clipped tone.
Still unsure if this was a sane idea, I didn’t deny or agree with that fact.
“I’m here to ask you some questions,” I murmured, keeping my voice steady.
Her full lips lifted into a wry smile. “Sending a child to interrogate me…. Is this a new tactic Tony discovered in his sleep?”
My eyes twitched at her insult. “They said you were a cunning woman. And your words cannot be trusted.”
Unphased, her laughter filled the cell, a hearty sound of amusement. “Yet here you are. Aren’t you brave, little girl?”
Annoyed, my voice rose. “I’m not here for them. I have my reasons for being here.”
“And you’re about to tell me those reasons, I suppose.”
And then it hit me. “You’re not surprised to see me. It’s like…. you were waiting for me.”
“Because I was,” she stated.
“What do you mean? Tony said I’d be safe here from Markus and Klaus.”
She tilted her head to the side, seizing me from head to toe as though she wanted to see what was inside my head. I bit my lip. Her searing gaze made me uncomfortable.
“I am on Markus and Klaus’ side. Telling you it’s Dominguez that you should fear will be ironic, so I won’t be convincing you to believe me, Berenice,” she said in a softer tone. “But you came here for a reason. You have questions. Ask me.”
Amazed that she could read right through me, I asked what I came for. “Uhm… I want to know what it is that you do for them. I learned that you got married to Klaus. Before that-“
“I am an assassin,” she cut me off, “a spy, an informant, a double agent, give me a task, and I will do it. I’ve been working with your father for the last two years. He is kind when you’re in his good graces, but he is a devil when you’re on his bad side. Your brother is worse. He is arrogant, annoying, and scheming.”
Dumbfounded, I could only gape at her. “If you think I will convince you to be on their side by giving you false information, then you’re wrong. But I can tell you this, what you see from them is what you get. They’ll never lie to get someone to side with them. Unlike your boyfriend, they don’t need to ‘manipulate’ anyone for loyalty. I know him. Your father knows him very well. Dominguez had been manipulating him since you went into hiding with your mother.”
“T-that’s not true…” I shook my head. “Tony will never do anything like that.”
She smirked, tipping her head back, and stared at the ceiling. “Love blinds you. It blinded me for a long time. I trusted my sister, yet she sold me to my enemies.” Her gaze landed back on me. “You’re smart; you know something’s not right. It wasn’t an accident for you and Dominguez to cross paths. He planned to use you against Markus, and he succeeded.” She snorted, shaking her head. “Everything your mom told you about Markus was lies. Dominguez stooped so low that he was fucking your mom, so she’d lie to your face.”
Of all the things she would say, that one never crossed my mind. I staggered on my footing, speechless. “My mother would never do that to me. And Tony loves me.” I raised my left hand, showing her the evidence of how much Tony loves me.
She didn’t even gaze at my diamond ring. Her eyes remained glued to my face, pity and disappointment unmistakable in her eyes.
“My purpose in coming here was to prove if what they say about my father and brother is true. Based on your words, I can tell just how fucked up they are, and you truly belong with them. You are good. I almost believed your words, but my mother and Tony? Just how sick can your mind be?” I spat, offering her a bitter laugh. “He treats her like his own mom!”
“Find out for yourself. As I said, you are smart. How hard can it be for you to check the CCTV footage in this place? See where your precious fiance goes when he’s not with you. Anyway, everything is up to you, Berenice. I did my task and will leave here in two hours.”
“You speak as if you are free to leave anytime you want.”
She gave me a toothy grin. “Because I am.” The rickety bed creaked beneath her weight as she lay on her back. “We will wait for you, but I want you to know that we don’t plan on leaving anyone alive. This place will turn to dust once your father arrives.”
“Mom and I were planning to play later,” Alexis said. “You can too if you want.” “Really? Thanks,” Caden immediately brightened. “…So you based the décor on the diner you used to work in,” Macey said after listening to Ava’s brief retelling of her past. “Were you thinki
Silas’s embrace tightened. He hated thinking about the trials she went through without him. Ava leaned against him relishing his comfort and support. Their past was not as important as their future. “You two aren’t going to go all kissy-face, right?” Theo asked. “We’re in public and
Two Months Later The restaurant was lively. Guests had been arriving for the past two hours eager for a unique dining experience. The staff was well-trained providing exceptional service despite the rush. They had been drilled in their duties by the restaurant’s manager, a tyrant the
She nodded. “Going down?” Silas repeated. “Just what have you three planned now?” “It was more like a hunch,” Lexi said. “Sean found something real interesting when he deep-dived Ryker Holdings. So we asked Duncan to keep an eye on someone, just in case.” “D
“Late? A test for what?” Silas asked not following. “Are you serious?” Tracy snorted a laugh. “Ava, you’re going to have to be a little clearer,” Opal chuckled. “Remember, it’s his first time.” Silas glanced from one to the other even more confused. Looking
“There you three are,” Tracy said as the trio returned to the party. “We were just about to send the search party to find you.” “Auntie Tracy, you’re so silly,” Alexis giggled. “How are you feeling mom?” Ava hugged her tight but Alexis didn’t feel any tension or strain in
