Kael POV

The shattered glass from the communication console crunched under my boots.

Blue sparks still danced across the ruined wires, casting harsh light against the quartz pillars. Rin stood by his workbench, his fingers twitching over a roll of clean linen bandages, his jaw locked tight in terror.

"The Upper District is a fortress, Kael," Rin said, his voice raspy. "You cannot walk into the high towers with two rifles and a tactical frying pan."

"Watch me," I said, picking up my pulse rifle

Kael POVThe tall gilded doors of the High Conservatory ballroom opened, and a wave of warm air, string music, and the heavy smell of old blood wine rolled out over us.Inside, hundreds of vampire elites moved across the white marble floor. Silk gowns and velvet coats caught the light from the crystal chandeliers. Almost everyone wore ornate masks of silver or black stone, their faces half-hidden.I adjusted the silver mask covering the upper half of my face. The cool metal sat firm against my nose and cheeks. My dark hair was brushed back, and the velvet coat Julian had chosen still felt strange on my shoulders.Lucien walked beside me like he owned the entire building. His black mask covered his cheekbones and left his sharp jaw and red eyes clear. The navy coat with gold trim fit his broad frame without a single crease.“Keep your head up, Kael,” he said, voice low under the music. “You belong here.”“I feel like a target,” I answered. My fingers stayed close to the hidden pocket w

Kael POVThe closet in the master bedroom of the Vale estate was full of expensive clothes that looked like they had never been worn. Long mahogany racks held velvet coats, silk shirts, and tailored wool trousers, all covered in clear plastic to keep the dust off.Julian stood near the full-length mirror, turning a silver measuring tape between his fingers. He looked focused, like he was measuring a patient instead of clothes.“I am not wearing velvet,” I said, pointing at a heavy black coat hanging on the rack. “I fight in denim and boots.”“You fight in a gray hoodie covered in Sump oil,” Rin said from the velvet ottoman. His tactical frying pan rested across his lap. “And right now you smell like a lower-sector drain.”“I smell like honest work,” I shot back.“The Council gala at the apex tower requires formal high-born clothes,” Julian said. His voice stayed flat as he pulled a white silk shirt from the rack. “Enforcers at the main ballroom gate check every guest’s cut and fabric.

Kael POVThe air inside the maintenance shaft grew thinner as we climbed. The heavy, metallic stench of the Sump slowly gave way to the sharp, artificial smell of pressurized air and ozone filters. Moisture dripped down the iron rungs of the vertical ladder, splashing against my boots every time I hauled myself up another ten feet.Above me, Lucien moved with effortless grace, his broad shoulders barely brushing the narrow conduit walls."How much higher, Julian?" I called up, my voice muffled by the thick steel piping.Julian’s voice echoed down from three rungs above Lucien. "We have passed the mid-city filtration banks. Another forty meters to the primary ventilation grate.""My knees are going to explode," Rin grumbled from below my feet. "And my frying pans are clanking against every pipe in District Two.""Keep climbing, doctor," I said, checking the energy pack locked into my pulse rifle. "Or you can go back down and explain your pans to Vane's forward squad."Rin let out a dra

"You cannot walk into the high towers with two rifles and a tactical frying pan.""Watch me," I said, picking up my pulse rifle off the wooden crate.I slammed a fresh battery pack into the receiver with a sharp, iron click.Julian stepped past the map table, adjusting his rimless glasses with two fingers. "Logistically, an infiltration of the apex tower requires bypassing seven automated security checkpoints, four dark-matter barrier gates, and two thousand High Council Enforcers.""Then we bypass them," I replied, looking over my shoulder at him. "Or we kill them. Either way, we are not sitting in this basement waiting

Lucien POVThe inner vault quieted down as Rin carried his new boxes of sterile bandages to the side counter.Julian stood near the map table, adjusting his rimless glasses while filing the logistics receipts into his leather pouch. Across the room, Kael sat on the wooden crate, taking apart his pulse rifle to clean the firing pin with a rag.The silver mark on my forearm throbbed with a low, warm hum, echoing Kael’s steady heartbeat across the stone floorboards.A sudden, high-pitched screech tore through the air.The main communication console near the archway ignited with harsh blue light. Sparks flew from the iron wiring as the city-wide emergency channel forcibly overrode our sanctuary shields.Julian dropped his stylus, his dark eyes sharpening instantly. "The High Council emergency frequency. They just breached every broadcast network in the lower sectors."Kael set his rifle barrel down on the crate, standing up slowly as the blue light projected a ten-foot holographic seal in

  • The Blood Sovereign's Omega (MM Romance)   Chapter 62: The Blood-Stained Ledger

Julian POVThe archive vault smelled of damp stone, old ink, and rusted iron.Dust motes floated in the amber beam of my handheld scanner as I sorted through the remaining ledgers from District Four. Across the stone workbench, Rin had already left to check the secondary water line, leaving his leather-bound medical registry behind.I picked up the thick book. The leather cover was scuffed and stained dark with dried copper blood at the corners.I flipped to the first page. I expected to find standard clinic accounting, charges for bandages, basic antiseptic, and local numbing gel. Instead, row after row of entries held no numbers in the payment column."District Four, Sector Seven," I read quietly to myself. "Patient: Thomas, age eight. Treatment: burn ointment, clean linen. Fee: zero."I turned the page."Patient: Maya, age six. Treatment: copper rot flush, clean water ration. Fee: zero."Over three hundred entries filled the pages. Every single child listed came from the lower tene
