Chapter 10

Author: Briken Colt
I was half a head taller than Tom now.

He tilted his head slightly back, his dark eyes fully occupied by my figure.

Tom cupped my face with one hand, his Adam's apple bobbing as he spoke, his voice low, "Say those two words again."

The narrow cabinet beneath me made it hard to sit steadily; I was leaning against him for support. "Which words?"

Seeing me play dumb, Tom sighed in helpless frustration. "I've put a lot of thought into you. I see you, and all I want to do is get closer to you—but I'm afraid of making things awkward. You just keep pushing me away."

I hadn't realized he felt this way.

Every time I saw him, he always appeared so calm and in control, as if nothing could shake him.

But now, as he spoke, it was like he was becoming the saddest puppy.

I couldn't help but laugh, and I placed my finger gently over his lips. "Before the two old men come looking for us, how about a kiss first?"

The invitation was clear, and of course, he had no reason to refuse. He pulled me

Brie deserved it.The advice I gave Brie about getting pregnant wasn't out of goodwill.Brie was a woman from an average background, clinging to a child to climb her way up. Even if she managed to give birth, then what? The Lindt family was capable of keeping the child and discarding the mother. The path I pointed her down—it was always meant to be a dead end.Raphael came to see me once. The weariness in his face was a perfect reflection of a man drowning in bankruptcy."Never thought it would actually come to this," he said.God sees everything."If you're here to ask my family for help getting through this, don't even bother," I said flatly. He forced a bitter smile. After all he'd been through, he must have tasted every shade of bitterness of life by now."I've got nothing now," he said. "Maybe we could start over."I kept my patience. "Start over how?""Let's remarry," he said confidently. "I'll move into your home as a live-in son-in-law. It's better than being divorc

The living room was unusually lively. For a second, I thought I was still dreaming. I rubbed my eyes.Raphael looked over and smiled. "You're awake? Grandpa was just about to send someone to wake you."What the hell is going on?Tom glanced at me. "Your grandpa says you're good at chess. Want to play a round with me?"Grandpa waved me over. I sat down, still half in a daze, and watched as he leaned on his cane and quietly slipped away.I narrowed my eyes. "What are you two doing here?"Raphael replied with perfect self-righteousness, "Just visiting my ex-wife. That's not a crime, is it?"Tom gave a dry laugh. "If I'm not mistaken, you've got a woman and a kid waiting for you at home. You really have the leisure to check in on your ex?""Mind your own business!" Raphael snapped. "How dare you mess with my wife? I must've been blind to think you were trustworthy.""You've got a lot of nerve talking about trust after you offered up your own wife like a bargaining chip."The two

I had a hunch—Brie had forged Raphael's signature on the divorce papers, imitating his handwriting to the last stroke. And I'd made sure to put that right under Raphael's nose."So what?" I said calmly. "This divorce is happening."His voice turned cold. "I don't agree. You're not getting a divorce. You're still my wife. Come home now—stop messing around with some shady guy outside."He was barking. I didn't think he deserved a response.I had ways to make him sign. After washing my hands, I opened the bathroom door. Tom was waiting, eyebrows raised. "So I'm the shady guy now?"I didn't bother to answer.Seeing I wasn't in the mood for games, he straightened up. "You're not happy. I'll stop teasing. I don't like being the third wheel. The divorce will happen."I shot him a look. He looked far too pleased playing the role of the other man.Later, over dinner, Tom charmed Grandpa so thoroughly that I found myself softening toward him, just a little.Being Mrs. Lindt wasn't jus

Brie quickly reached out and asked to meet me alone.Curious what she was up to, I agreed. When we met, she handed me a divorce agreement.I flipped through it. Raphael's signature was there—that was his handwriting, no doubt about it.But something felt off. Since when would the Lindt family let me or my family go so easily?I looked up from the pages and studied her face. Her expression wasn't exactly calm. That told me what I needed to know. She took a sip of water, her voice even but lacking confidence. "Raphael doesn't want to see you, so he asked me to bring the divorce papers. If there's no issue, I'll head out."She had guts, I'd give her that. But I don't forget easily. And if she wanted to self-destruct, I wasn't going to stop her.I slipped the papers into my bag and left.Back home, I sent her a text. Then I called Raphael, keeping my tone casual. "Your little girlfriend dropped off the divorce agreement. I got it. From now on, you go your way, I'll go mine."Wh

I ignored my mother-in-law's words and spent some money to get the gossip off the headlines. But trouble came in waves. Before I could catch my breath, the housekeeper rang me up. "Miss Elizabeth, your husband's mistress has been running her mouth. Said all kinds of nonsense. Got Master Ressler so upset he's fallen ill."I rushed back to my family home.My grandpa was half-reclined in bed, looking pale and worn. When he saw me, his lips pulled into a faint smile. "You came back? You've got your own problems to take care of. No need to worry about me."I sat by the bed and kept him company for a while. He'd been fragile ever since a serious illness a few years back, but he'd been maintaining his health carefully. He'd been in good health up till now because nothing too alarming had happened.Honestly, if I hadn't married Raphael, I probably would've ended up with someone just as bad—or worse. At least with Raphael, I could treat it all like a performance.Shame his mistress didn't

"Why'd you drink as a punishment when you should take that tissue from my mouth? Was a kiss from me that unbearable?"I flexed my aching wrist and forced a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "Your mouth's been on someone else. I find it dirty."Worried Raphael might take it the wrong way, I added, "Of course, even if it hadn't, I still wouldn't want to touch you."His brow lifted, his expression darkened, and he stepped in closer.Raphael's tall frame cast a shadow over me. His breath hit my face—warm, close, unmistakably possessive. My back hit the wall. There was nowhere left to go."Funny how you're all over Tom. So, turns out you're not that innocent after all." He gave a low laugh. "Good thing. I like women who aren't."His hand caught my chin, forcing my head up. His thumb dragged slowly across my lips as he leaned in."Elizabeth, let's get something straight. I'm your legal husband. You'll take care of me first—before thinking about any other man."Some people's upbringin

Losing a bit of face in exchange for cold, hard cash? I came out ahead. After the wedding fiasco, Lindt Group's stocks dipped. His parents demanded damage control—he had to show up with me in public. We were to play the loving couple, put on a show.Raphael might be reckless, but he knew how to weigh consequences. Even when he hung out with his usual pack of rich, idle friends, he brought me along. The others followed suit, girlfriends in tow. We ended up around a poker table.Four women, one table. Everything went smoothly. But at some point, two of the men joined in.Tom took the seat across from me. Raphael sat to my right. The dynamic shifted the moment they sat down. I wasn't good at poker to begin with, and now, the pressure was heavier. The two men dominated the table. It was my turn to deal. I checked my cards, praying for a decent hand.Tom pushed two chips forward and drawled, "Raise."My stomach tightened. Before I could fold, his fingers closed over mine. He pluck

High society never lacks for drama. And thanks to Raphael, I got to be at the center of it for once.I swirled the wine in my glass, took the last sip like it was nothing, and walked away as if I were just another guest at someone else's show. The hotel had rooms prepared for rest. I punched in the code and was about to slip inside when Tom followed me up, pressing his hand against the edge of the door to hold it open.He stepped in.I looked at him calmly. "What are you doing here?"Before he could answer, the keypad beeped again.I froze. For a brief moment, my mind went blank. But Tom grabbed my wrist and pulled me behind the folding screen just in time. The door opened.Raphael stormed in with his mistress in tow."You could at least pick your moments. Have I been too soft on you?"She looped her arms around his neck, her voice sweet and syrupy. "I just can't stand watching you with that woman."She pouted, asking, "What does she have that I don't?""Nothing," he said,
