Gabriel and I walked side by side, the boy was asleep somewhere else in the house, but his presence lingered in my mind.

It was strange, no…unbelievable that he survived everything that happened.

“It’s weird,” I muttered, breaking the silence. “A kid surviving that kind of catastrophe… it doesn’t make sense.”

Gabriel glanced at me, his expression calm. “There are certain miracles in life, Ryker. Maybe the Moon Goddess pitied him and chose to spare him.”

I scoffed. “Is it really mercy? To live without his family? I think… maybe it would’ve been better if he passed away with them. Life’s already cruel enough. For a child to grow up alone…” I trailed off, my chest feeling heavier the more I thought about it.

Gabriel didn’t argue right away. He only nodded, like he understood what I was trying to say. Then, with a steady voice, he replied, “He’s not alone. He has us. We’ll take care of him.”
