POV: Gideon

A sharp, heavy pain shot through the back of my head. I closed my eyes and pressed my thumb hard against the bridge of my nose. Another headache. They had been getting worse every single week, ever since Cynthia got sick.

It felt like a dark, tight iron band squeezing my skull, refusing to let go.

"You need to sign these, Alpha," Beta Marcus said, putting a stack of papers on my desk. "The elders are getting impatient."

I opened my eyes. The bright sunlight coming through the window hurt my head like knives. "What is this?"

"The list of surrogate candidates," Marcus said. "Three females from our pack, and two from the border pack. The doctors cleared them all."

I pushed the papers away, disgust rising in my gut. "I told you I’m not doing this."

"Gideon, you don't have a choice!"

The office door opened. Cynthia walked in, supported by her maid. She looked super thin, her blonde hair was dull, and her skin looked pale and translucent. The sweet flower smell she used to carry was completely gone, replaced by the bitter, sharp smell of medicine.

My chest tightened with a heavy, suffocating weight. Look at her, I thought, guilt washing over me. She was so full of life when I claimed her. Now she’s fading away, and it’s my job to protect her. I got up right away, walked around the desk, and took her arm from the maid. "Cynthia, you should be resting."

"The elders are right, Gideon," she interrupted, her voice weak and desperate. She looked up at me with pale blue eyes. "Silas met with the southern clan leaders yesterday. He’s telling everyone you can't rule because we don't have an heir."

"Silas is a bastard who wants my crown," I said coldly. "He won't take it."

"He WILL take it if you don't have a baby before the blood moon!" Cynthia’s voice cracked. She grabbed my arm, her fingers weak. "The law is clear, Gideon. An Alpha without an heir loses his throne. Silas will kill me the moment he takes over! You know he will!"

I went quiet. She was right, and that was the terrifying part. Silas hated Cynthia. If he challenged me and won over the traditional elders, he would execute my whole household to secure his claim.

"The law doesn't allow fake methods like IVF," Cynthia whispered, tears running down her cheeks. "It has to be natural. Please, Gideon. Do this for us. Do it for the pack."

To lay with another woman while my bonded wife sat in the next room went against every rule of honor I had lived by. My wolf growled inside my chest, resisting the idea. Yet, deep down, a strange part of me knew our mate bond had felt muted and quiet for years—a distant hum instead of a roaring flame. But my duty to protect her was absolute.

"You are asking me to sleep with another woman," I said, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

"It's not a real relationship!" she begged, holding my hand. "It's just business. She's just a tool to have a baby! Once she gives birth, we pay her, she leaves, and the baby is ours. Ours, Gideon."

I looked down at her sick face. I promised to protect her when I put the Luna mark on her neck. I can't let Silas butcher her just to save my own pride.

I looked over at Beta Marcus, who was standing by the desk.

"Set up the interviews," I said, my voice cold and flat. "Bring the top candidate to the house on Friday."

"Do you want to see her paper?" Marcus asked, holding up a folder. "A Beta's daughter from the border pack applied. Her bloodline is clean."

"No," I said, turning away to look out the window at the trees. If I read her name, if I look at her face, she becomes a real person. I can't afford that. "I don't want to know her name. I don't want to see her face until the interview. She is a stranger, Marcus. Treat her like one."

  • The Broken Luna's Surrogate   Luna Cynthia's Illness

POV: VivianI sat on the edge of the bed for hours, listening to the wind howl through the pine trees outside. The cottage door was still standing wide open from where Gideon had kicked it open and sprinted out into the night. Cold rain blew across the wooden floorboards, extinguishing the fireplace until the room was pitch black and freezing. My hands trembled as I pulled my torn dress off and changed into my spare clothes in the dark.I felt completely dirty. My skin still burned where his hands had gripped my waist, where his mouth had pressed against my neck, and where his broad body had weighed me down into the mattress. What made it worse, what made my stomach twist into a sickening knot, was that my body had actually reacted to him. My wolf had stirred for a stranger who didn't give a damn about me.He loves his wife, I told myself, staring into the dark. He almost had sex with me out of duty, and the second she stopped breathing, he ran to her like his whole world was ending. I

  • The Broken Luna's Surrogate   The first night

POV: Vivian The cottage on the edge of the Blood River territory was warm, dark, and quiet. Outside, two guards stood watch in the rain. Inside, the fire crackled in the fireplace, painting the heavy wooden bed in orange light. I sat on the edge of the soft mattress. My heart was pounding like a hammer against my ribs. This is it, I thought, my hands gripping my knees. This is where the contract actually begins. The front door unlocked with a heavy click. Gideon walked into the bedroom. He had taken off his dark leather jacket, wearing only a black fitted shirt with the sleeves pushed up his arms. He looked massive in the small room. His dark, cold hazel eyes locked straight onto me. Neither of us said a word. The air felt…heavy, like a storm about to break. "The healers said tonight is the right time," Gideon said. His voice was low, rough, and thick with tension. "I know," I whispered. My throat felt bone dry. He walked over to the bed, unbuckling his heavy belt and dropping

  • The Broken Luna's Surrogate   The Decree

POV: Vivian The next three days were a total nightmare. My mother’s cough got way worse. She lay in bed all day staring at the ceiling, barely drinking the soup I made her. Toby came home once, packed a small bag of clothes without looking at me, and left again. Every time I looked at his empty bed, my chest hurt, but I held onto my resolve. *** On Thursday afternoon, I was in the kitchen boiling water when the front door slammed open. My father walked in. But he wasn't alone. Lori was right behind him, carrying a bag and wearing a fancy fur coat my mother could never afford. "What is this?" I demanded, stepping out of the kitchen. "Pack your bags, Vivian," my father said, his face red from drinking. He didn't look me in the eye. "I sold the house today. The new owner moves in on Monday." "You did what?" I whispered, my stomach dropping. I knew it was coming, but seeing him actually do it made my blood run cold. "Mom is in the next room! She can barely walk!" "She ca

  • The Broken Luna's Surrogate   The Alpha

POV: Vivian The study was huge, filled with tall bookshelves and dark wood walls. Sitting behind a massive desk at the far end was Alpha Gideon. He was even bigger than I imagined. Broad shoulders, sharp jaw, and short dark hair. But his eyes were what caught me a cold, piercing hazel that felt like stepping into an ice-cold river. Next to his chair stood an old advisor and Beta Marcus, who shut the door behind me. Gideon didn't get up. He sat back in his big leather chair, his eyes moving down my simple grey dress, taking in my muddy boots and plain hair. His face didn't show a single emotion. "Vivian," Gideon said. His voice was low and heavy with natural authority. "Daughter of Beta Marcus from the border pack." "Yes, Alpha," I said, keeping my voice steady. I didn't bow. I didn't look down at the floor. I might be selling my time, but I am not begging him. "The healers say your health is great," he said, opening a thin folder on his desk. "Your wolf is stable. But your situa

  • The Broken Luna's Surrogate   The Surrogacy Test

POV: Vivian The medical checkup the next morning was awful. For two hours, three old healers from the Blood River pack checked me over. They drew blood from my arm, poked my stomach, and checked my heart. They talked about my body like I was a horse at an auction ground. "Strong bones," the main healer said, writing on her board. "Bloodline is pure Beta. Her wolf is quiet because she's stressed, but she's totally healthy." "She’ll work," the second healer agreed, wiping her hands. "Send the paper to Beta Marcus." I pulled my plain shirt back on and buttoned it up with cold fingers. I felt hollowed out, like my body wasn't even mine anymore. It was just a machine they were testing before buying. But I didn't say a single word. I just wanted to get out of there. When I got back home at noon, the house was dead quiet. My mother was lying in bed with her eyes closed. She wasn't sleeping, but she didn't look at me when I walked in. The silence from her hurt worse than any insult Toby
