LUCAS decided to wander around. He wasn’t really planning to buy anything; he was just accompanying his older sister at her request.

His feet led him to the vegetable section. He smiled at the sight of the round, green leafy vegetables, his favorite. He was about to grab a cabbage when someone grabbed his hand. He turned to see who it was.

“You?!”

He thought to himself, “Small world.”

“Are you following me?” he asked, looking into the woman’s face. She was the one he almost ran over earlier.

“How dare you.”

“Saying something?” he teased, even though he heard her.

Instead of replying, the woman grabbed a whole cabbage and talked to it.

“Hays Maxine, is anyone around? No. But there’s a rude, arrogant jerk.”

“I’m Lucas.”

“Excuse me?” the woman said in a sarcastic tone. Her gaze was sharp and unfriendly.

“You were stating your name, so I guessed you wanna know mine,” he explained. He was amused by her reaction. “Girls’ strategy, right?”

The woman gasped and glared at him again. If looks could k*ll, he would have been dead already.

“Hey you, get away from me before I smash this cabbage on your face!”

He couldn’t hold back his laughter. She was practically spitting fire, prompting him to tease her even more.

“Old tricks you know. Women always do that to get men’s attention.”

He saw her chest rise and fall before she spoke again.

“Find someone else to talk to! I’m not interested in you!”

The woman was about to turn away, but he quickly stopped her cart.

“What’s your problem?!”

“Nothing. Have you?”

“You’re crazy!”

He grinned again. He had been in Sta. Monica for a while and could understand and speak Tagalog to some extent. But this woman’s way of speaking was so weird, or maybe this is just how people like her talk?

“Wanna talk about my motorcycle?” he said in a soft voice. “Do you even know how expensive it is---it’s a Harley Davidson.”

His amusement made the woman momentarily speechless. Her face turned redder than a piece of paper.

“Lucas..!”

He turned to the voice. It was his elder  sister, Lourine.

“Lourine..”

She was only a year older than him, so he called her that.

“I thought you left me already. And who’s that girl?” she looked at the woman next to him. “Girlfriend?”

“Hell, no!” he denied with a frown and approached Lourine.

He glanced at the stranger before helping his older sister push her cart. He was puzzled as he stared at his hand. He didn’t know if the woman had felt the same thing he felt earlier.

THIRTY minutes before reaching the Harrison mansion. It was perched atop a hill, which is why Lucas and Lourine, siblings, rarely went down to town.

“Good day, Sir!” greeted the guard, opening the large gate that served as the barrier to the Harrison family home. Lourine was driving her car while Lucas followed behind on his motorcycle.

“I told you darling, you don’t have to do that. Let Nanny Ebith do that,” said Lucas’s mother, Amelia Harrison. She watched Lourine as she busied herself arranging the groceries they bought.

“It’s okay Mom, I love doing this. Kinda stress reliever.”

“Yeah, you’re right, darling.”

“What are you doin’, baby brother?” Lourine turned to him, noticing him rummaging through the items.

“You didn’t buy cabbage?” he asked back, not finding what he was looking for.

“No.”

He frowned at the answer.

“Wait. You were too rushed. You even pulled me, right? It’s your fault baby brother why I wasn’t able to buy your favorite.”

“You should insist me to stay,” he insisted.

“Enough baby, I’ll ask Nanny Ebith to buy it,” his mom said.

He turned away from the two, feeling annoyed. It was funny, but cabbage was his weakness. He must have been conceived craving it.

“Lucas,” his mom called again, making him turn around. She sighed deeply before speaking. “Your Grandfather is coming soon.”

He didn’t say anything, and even Lourine stared at him.

“You cannot run away from it, Son,” she continued.

“I know,” he replied almost inaudibly. He secretly clenched his fists. That old man is going to witness his 21st birthday, and that day was the one he dreaded the most in his life.

---

“HERE’S the fare,” Maxine said to the tricycle driver, handing him a twenty-peso bill. She was in front of the mansion, unloading her groceries one by one.

“This is not enough, Miss.”

“How much is it?”

“Twenty-five.”

“That’s expensive. Any discount? I’m a student,” she complained.

“Come on. It’s only twenty-five, and you’re asking for a discount? Why didn’t you just walk then.”

Wow, when you’re unlucky, you really are. Why did it seem like everyone was just trying to annoy her today? She thought to herself.

She angrily dug into her purse and handed him some coins.

“Here you go. I hope your tire goes flat,” she muttered under her breath.

“Cheapskate,” the tricycle driver retorted, seemingly hearing her remark, before speeding away.

MAXINE caught sight of  Beatriz in the living room. She was reading a magazine.

“Hey!”

She stopped in her tracks and turned to her young mistress’s call.

“Why?”

“Bring me a glass of water.”

“Okay,” she replied and continued towards the kitchen, carrying her groceries.

“WHAT’S that?” Beatriz asked, raising an eyebrow at the glass she was carrying.

“A glass of water, Ma’am, can’t you see?” she retorted.

“I know! Are you going to give me water without ice?!”

“You didn’t say so,” she calmly answered her young mistress’s outburst.

“Common sense, stupid!” she yelled again.

“I’ll just change it.”

“Don’t!” Beatriz snapped. She set down the magazine she was reading and stood up.

Maxine watched her young mistress go upstairs, shaking her head. She had done that on purpose. She was incredibly annoyed today.

She picked up the glass of water to return it to the kitchen when a picture in a popular magazine caught her attention. It looked like a family picture. The two women sitting on the long couch were beautiful. Behind them, three men stood. Her eyes were drawn to the man in the middle, wearing a black suit – the arrogant one?! Next to him was an older man, probably his grandfather. She suddenly felt a chill run down her spine. She felt something was off about the old man’s face.

[HARRISON]

She raised an eyebrow. So that’s why that guy was so arrogant. He had something to be arrogant about.

MAXINE coughed, liquid seeping into her mouth and nose. She had been splashed with cold water, and it jolted her back to consciousness.“Finally, you’re awake, sleeping beauty,” a guy’s voice sneered from in front of her.“Let’s start the party then, dude,” another voice chimed in. Maxine recognized the voices and the uniforms; they were Wilford University students. She couldn’t make out their faces clearly because the light was dim and flickering between them. She scanned the area. The space was cluttered with old, unused university equipment and facilities. It was quite dark; only the moonlight filtering through a grimy window allowed her to see the other campus buildings. What time was it? How long had she been unconscious? It felt like they were the only students left on campus; the lights in all the departments were off.“W-what do you want?” Terror gripped Maxine. She shivered, both from the cold and the fear of what these guys might do to her.“So sorry, beauty, we were jus

MAXINE’S eyelids fluttered, her eyes slowly opening. A red ceiling was the first thing she saw. She gently moved her gaze around the room, recognizing her surroundings. She tried to sit up despite her weakness. She was about to get out of bed when the door suddenly opened, revealing Lucas.“Don’t move,” he said softly, though it was a command. He approached her and sat on the edge of the bed. “How do you feel? Does anything hurt? Does your head still ache?” he asked, his concern evident in his tone. She stared at his face for a moment. She was sure of what she saw the previous night. Something was wrong. And for God’s sake, where did that creature that attacked them come from?“Maxine…”She flinched as his hand touched her shoulder. “H-huh?”“Are you okay?”“I-I’m hungry,” she whispered weakly.Lucas pressed a button on the wall near the headboard and spoke into it. “Nanny please bring me breakfast to my room. Now.”“Lucas…”He didn’t answer, but his questioning gaze met hers.“How d

“IT’S beautiful…!” Maxine murmured, sitting cross-legged and looking up at the sky. She and Lucas were currently at the oval for stargazing. He suddenly suggested they leave the social hall.“Very,” she heard Lucas agree.“The biggest one’s mine!” she pointed to a particularly prominent star.“The pitch one’s mine.”She frowned, turning to Lucas, who was lying down with his head resting on his arms. He wasn’t looking at the sky, but at her.“Are you teasing me?”Lucas didn’t answer; instead, he pulled her down to lie beside him.“They’re more beautiful when you gaze at them like this.”He was right. They shimmered brilliantly.“Maxine…”“Why?” She was still looking at the sky.“Are you disappointed?”She looked at him. Only then did she notice how close their faces were. She secretly swallowed, unable to open her mouth. She felt hypnotized by his eyes.“Because Hevo didn’t ask you to dance.”She turned her attention back to the sky. She felt awkward.“N-no.”“You don’t seem to be hidi

EVEN Maxine couldn’t believe the reflection she saw in the mirror. She didn’t think she could get any prettier. The pitch-black strapless, heart-shaped-chest cocktail dress that fell above her knees suited her perfectly, and she paired it with silver stilettos.Tonight was the acquaintance party, so Meghan invited her to her house to get ready.“You’re beautiful, Maxine,” Meghan complimented, also looking at her in the mirror. She smiled at her. “T-thank you, Meghan!”Meghan shook her head. “Nah, don’t mention it. Just think that this is our last year. Let’s enjoy the night. No killjoys, okay? I know you.”She smiled again in response before returning her gaze to her own reflection.IN the hallway of the COM building, all the students under the College of Management gathered, by department, as the catering was department-based.“Hey, Maxine, stop,” Meghan scolded her, widening her eyes.“What? I’m just making the most of what I paid for,” she reasoned. It would be a waste of the Alfon

“MAXINE, get up, you might be late.” Maxine lazily got up. But she allowed herself to sit for a few minutes with her eyes closed. “Come down so you can take a bath,” her mother added. “I don’t have classes today, Mom.” She remained with her eyes closed. “Oh, that’s good. You can go grocery shopping then. I still need to clean the master’s bedroom.” That’s when she opened her eyes and looked at her mother. “Okay, Mom. But I might be a bit late. I have a date with a classmate today.” “Why? Where are you going?” “Meghan wants me to help her buy an outfit for our acquaintance party. It’s tomorrow night.” She folded her blanket before getting off the deck. “Oh, okay. Never mind then. Just go ahead with your date; that’s more important.” “It’s okay, Mom, I can do both,” she insisted. “No, honey. I’ll do it later.” She felt guilty. She didn’t help her mother much with the chores in the mansion. “Okay, Mom. I’ll make it up to you next time.” Her mother just smiled before saying,

“HEY..!”Maxine let out a deep sigh before turning to Lucas. She didn’t understand him. He didn’t want to see her, but what was he doing here? It irritated her.“What?!” she asked, her voice sharp.Lucas took a while to speak.“Actually…” He paused. Confusion was evident on his face. After a while, he started walking towards her.He looked into her eyes. She frowned. He probably intended to just stare at her the whole time?“I just want to confirm something,” he said in a low voice. She frowned even more. What was this arrogant guy’s drama? But she didn’t expect what he did next.He slowly bent down. She couldn’t react or even move. She felt like a post rooted to the ground. Even if she wanted to move, her body wouldn’t cooperate. Until he claimed her lips again.“Another rule to be added.” She held her bre
