Love is unpredictable, and often comes when we least expect it. Love can be felt for any number of reasons, and it’s those unexpected qualities that make someone stand out from the crowd. But what if that someone can’t be your mate, and loving her is against the rule? Would you still go for her and follow the whisper of your heart, or forget her and embrace your responsibility?
View MoreMAXINE navigated the muddy road towards the tricycle stop. It was the first day of classes and she couldn’t afford to be late.
She was studying at Wilford University, a prestigious and renowned school where only the rich and famous could gain admission. She didn’t belong there. Her mother was a maid, and she had been serving the Alfonzos for ten years. She wanted to be annoyed. Not a single tricycle passed by when she was in a hurry, and the sky was starting to darken. Her frown deepened when a black car sped past her from behind. Mud almost splashed on her uniform. It was Beatriz’s car, the only daughter of the Alfonzo couple. The couple was kind, but Beatriz was the opposite. She was incredibly snobbish and arrogant. MAXINE immediately went to the restroom upon reaching Wilford. She carefully looked at her reflection in the mirror. She shook her head. She was just entering the university, but she looked like she was already going home. She wasn’t a rich kid who was chauffeured to school in fancy cars. So before she reached the university, she was already exhausted. After retouching her makeup, she walked out of the restroom when two girls deliberately bumped into her. She dropped her books. She immediately bent down to pick them up. “Sorry,” said one girl, her voice obviously insincere. “I didn’t see you.” “Served right,” said the other girl, laughing. She chose not to fight back and just continued what she was doing. She was used to it. This had been her life since she started attending Wilford. But she had no choice but to endure it. She didn’t want to waste the opportunity given to her by the Alfonzo couple. In fact, she was graduating this year with a degree in BHRM. THE first class was over. And since Maxine’s next subject was at two o’clock in the afternoon, she decided to go home first. As she always did, she walked to the station. It was walking distance from the school, so she patiently walked there every day. Soon, it started to drizzle. She ran. Thankfully, she reached the bus stop before the rain poured heavily. She took out a handkerchief from her bag to wipe the raindrops off her face when the wind suddenly snatched it away. She quickly took a step to catch the handkerchief, but a motorcycle sped towards her direction. She managed to dodge it but lost her balance. She let out a sharp scream before falling. She also saw the motorcycle rider fall and spin. She tried to get up. She knew the motorcycle rider was more hurt. “Hey, are you okay?!” she asked in a loud voice as she slowly approached him. He was wearing a helmet so she couldn’t see his face. She helped the motorcycle rider get up until he could sit down. “Are you okay?” she asked again. But she didn’t expect her reaction when he took off his helmet. There were many handsome guys in Wilford, but the man in front of her seemed extraordinary; his eyebrows were moderately thick, his nose was sharp, his lips were rosy, and his slightly slanted gray eyes added to his charm. How could such a handsome creature exist in Sta. Monica? He must be a stranger, she thought. “Are you stupid?!” the man shouted, bringing her back to her senses. His eyebrows were furrowed as he stared at her. “You’re just gonna cross without looking if there is a vehicle or not?!” Her admiration for the man seemed to vanish like a bubble. Her ears buzzed and she let out a breath. He called her stupid. “W-what did you say?” she asked incredulously. “Hey, Mister, I got hurt too, you know! And look at my uniform, it’s dirty! Who’s the one driving fast like they own the road!” The man just raised an eyebrow, a seemingly irritated smile playing on his lips. It was weird, but he seemed even more handsome when he was angry. “And now it’s my fault. Do you have any idea how much my Harley Davidson is? Even if you work the entire part of your life, you cannot pay for this!” She discreetly looked at the motorcycle. She swallowed nervously when she saw that the left side mirror was broken. She didn’t know the brand of the motorcycle, but based on its class, it looked expensive. The man suddenly stood up and walked towards the motorcycle, so she looked up at him. He was tall. He must be a basketball player. After a while, the man started the motorcycle and sped away. She was about to protest, but he was quickly out of sight. In anger, she stomped her foot on the road and followed the path the man took with teary eyes. Maybe he was also studying at Wilford, he was so arrogant! She muttered to herself. MAXINE’S nose was about to smoke with anger when she got home to the mansion. Perlita was surprised to see her daughter’s appearance, although she didn’t ask any questions, and Maxine didn’t want to talk about it. She went straight to the maid’s quarters and took a bath. MAXINE first went to the vegetable section. Her class was in the afternoon, so she volunteered to go grocery shopping instead of her mother, Perlita. She checked the list again before starting to choose. She was about to grab a whole cabbage when she felt someone’s hand on hers. She automatically turned to her side only to have her eyes pop out. “You?!”“IT’S beautiful…!” Maxine murmured, sitting cross-legged and looking up at the sky. She and Lucas were currently at the oval for stargazing. He suddenly suggested they leave the social hall.“Very,” she heard Lucas agree.“The biggest one’s mine!” she pointed to a particularly prominent star.“The pitch one’s mine.”She frowned, turning to Lucas, who was lying down with his head resting on his arms. He wasn’t looking at the sky, but at her.“Are you teasing me?”Lucas didn’t answer; instead, he pulled her down to lie beside him.“They’re more beautiful when you gaze at them like this.”He was right. They shimmered brilliantly.“Maxine…”“Why?” She was still looking at the sky.“Are you disappointed?”She looked at him. Only then did she notice how close their faces were. She secretly swallowed, unable to open her mouth. She felt hypnotized by his eyes.“Because Hevo didn’t ask you to dance.”She turned her attention back to the sky. She felt awkward.“N-no.”“You don’t seem to be hidi
EVEN Maxine couldn’t believe the reflection she saw in the mirror. She didn’t think she could get any prettier. The pitch-black strapless, heart-shaped-chest cocktail dress that fell above her knees suited her perfectly, and she paired it with silver stilettos.Tonight was the acquaintance party, so Meghan invited her to her house to get ready.“You’re beautiful, Maxine,” Meghan complimented, also looking at her in the mirror. She smiled at her. “T-thank you, Meghan!”Meghan shook her head. “Nah, don’t mention it. Just think that this is our last year. Let’s enjoy the night. No killjoys, okay? I know you.”She smiled again in response before returning her gaze to her own reflection.IN the hallway of the COM building, all the students under the College of Management gathered, by department, as the catering was department-based.“Hey, Maxine, stop,” Meghan scolded her, widening her eyes.“What? I’m just making the most of what I paid for,” she reasoned. It would be a waste of the Alfon
“MAXINE, get up, you might be late.” Maxine lazily got up. But she allowed herself to sit for a few minutes with her eyes closed. “Come down so you can take a bath,” her mother added. “I don’t have classes today, Mom.” She remained with her eyes closed. “Oh, that’s good. You can go grocery shopping then. I still need to clean the master’s bedroom.” That’s when she opened her eyes and looked at her mother. “Okay, Mom. But I might be a bit late. I have a date with a classmate today.” “Why? Where are you going?” “Meghan wants me to help her buy an outfit for our acquaintance party. It’s tomorrow night.” She folded her blanket before getting off the deck. “Oh, okay. Never mind then. Just go ahead with your date; that’s more important.” “It’s okay, Mom, I can do both,” she insisted. “No, honey. I’ll do it later.” She felt guilty. She didn’t help her mother much with the chores in the mansion. “Okay, Mom. I’ll make it up to you next time.” Her mother just smiled before saying,
“HEY..!”Maxine let out a deep sigh before turning to Lucas. She didn’t understand him. He didn’t want to see her, but what was he doing here? It irritated her.“What?!” she asked, her voice sharp.Lucas took a while to speak.“Actually…” He paused. Confusion was evident on his face. After a while, he started walking towards her.He looked into her eyes. She frowned. He probably intended to just stare at her the whole time?“I just want to confirm something,” he said in a low voice. She frowned even more. What was this arrogant guy’s drama? But she didn’t expect what he did next.He slowly bent down. She couldn’t react or even move. She felt like a post rooted to the ground. Her eyes wide open, staring at his face, his eyes closed as he kissed her.Lucas paused for a while but didn’t move his face away from hers. His eyes dropped back down to her lips. Even if she wanted to move, her body wouldn’t cooperate. Until he claimed her lips again.“Another rule to be added.” She held her bre
A week passed, and Lucas didn’t show up to see Maxine. After that scene at the university, the young man didn’t contact her again.“I thought I’d be his slave,” Maxine muttered to herself in front of the mirror, combing her shoulder-length hair. “Well, this is okay too. Besides, maybe he won’t continue the contract.”“Who are you talking to?”“Oh my gosh, Mom! You scared me,” she exclaimed, turning to her mother. She hadn’t noticed her mother’s arrival.“Who were you talking to?”“No one. I was talking to myself.”“You silly girl.”She applied a little lipstick and powder to her face.“Okay, Mom, I’m leaving.” She kissed her mother.“Be careful.”“Yes, Mom.”SHE got her books from her locker when she arrived at the university for her class that day. As soon as she closed her locker, Hevo’s face appeared before her.“Why do you always pop up wherever I am…?” she jokingly asked him.“Because I’m stalking you,” he replied nonchalantly, then smiled. To be fair, he was cute.“Crazy…!”He w
“T-THANK you.” Lucas finally came to his senses. He slowly loosened his grip on Maxine. “I-I’ll go ahead…” He finally let go. He could barely hear anything except the deafening beat of his heart. He couldn’t speak. He just stared at Maxine’s face until she turned away. He couldn’t even move. He just stood there, watching as the girl walked away. What the h*ck was that?! D*mn, why does it feel like this feeling is getting worse. Oh God, I’m sick. LUCAS didn’t want to go home because of his grandfather, but he felt like just lying down all day. He seemed not feeling well. He didn’t want to see Maxine anymore. He was so confused. He slumped onto the bed and buried his face in the pillow. No matter how hard he tried to forget, the scene kept replaying in his mind. D*mn! There it is again, his heart. He touched his chest again, still lying on his stomach. Its beat wasn’t normal anymore. “D*mn, is this for real?” He sounded like a fool talking to himself. “Ugh, you got to be ki
